Summary/Abstract: The state coup of June 9, 1923, is one of the key events in Bulgarian history in the period between the two world wars. The research aims to examine journalistic reflexes and relations to the authorities just after the event. One of the big questions for Bulgarian journalism in general is to what extent it manages to respond to historical needs, to perceive the logic of historical development, and to protect the public interest in a longer-term perspective. In search of answers to these important questions, the authors draw on well-established communication and historical studies, as well as on an empirical study of materials from the periodical press. The conclusions are drawn based on classifying and analyzing the content of some of the most prominent and mass daily newspapers, party, and specialized outlets of the period. The questions asked and the conclusions go far beyond the specifics of the historical moment, as they affect fundamental problems of the relations between media and power, and journalism itself – about its civic functions, influence on public opinion, responsibility to interpret the development events and protect the society from dangerous precedents that may develop into trends in the future.
