Summary/Abstract: The article presents the dialects in the Bulgarian language continuum and the processes of stagnation occurring within them due to the linguistic urbanization of the population. Studies in contemporary sociolinguistics demonstrate the diminishing functions of territorial dialects under the pressure of public opinion, which imposes the imperative of diglossia. The processes are examined from the perspective of interference theory to explain the dependencies between language aging and the extent of interferences within it. The possibilities for contemporary empirical research on dialectal speech are limited for certain reasons – the passing of the oldest speakers, migration to urban areas, and emigration abroad of younger individuals. The author's aim is to propose opportunities for such research in the speech of Bulgarian immigrants in Sydney, Australia.
