(The Mixed Language Of The Viennese Bulgarians Between Vitality And Extinction)
- Author(s):Ana Kocheva
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Sociolinguistics
- Page Range:13-22
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:language death; vitality; mixed language; first generation; Bulgarian migrants; Austria
- Summary/Abstract:Language death occurs within unstable bi- or polylingual communities because of the linguistic dominance of the new language and the retreat of the minority language. The article draws some significant conclusions regarding the vitality and prospects for the existence and development of the mixed language that can be registered in many places among the larger Bulgarian-speaking migrant communities around the world. In this case, the conclusions are drawn on the basis of the mixed language of the Austrian Bulgarians. The mixed language has a more stable character in the first generation of Bulgarian migrants in Austria. In the case of the representatives of the second generation of Austrian Bulgarians, the process of Germanization is very advanced and they together linguistically oppose the representatives of the first Bulgarian generation with their already stabilized German lexical elements and grammatical constructions. While in the informants of the first generation the Austro-Germanisms have a variable character, in the second generation they have become almost the norm and the duplicity with Bulgarian elements is less inherent for them.

- Author(s):Hristo Kyuchukov
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics
- Page Range:23-35
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:Pomaks; pomaski; deixis; narrative discourse
- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents research findings among the Pomak groups of Turkey. Research with Pomaks living in the surroundings of the town of Biga – not so far from the city of Chanakkale in Turkey, was focused on the use of the deixis in the narrative discourse. The Pomaks in the villages around Biga emigrated to Turkey from Bulgaria after the Russian-Turkish war in 1878. They are coming from the surrounding villages of the town of Chepelare. They speak a Slavic language which they call pomaski which has adapted many lexical borrowings from Turkish. The use of demonstrative pronouns in the narratives of the speakers are observed and their deictic functions are analyzed. Although the paper and study are very small, they still bring new information about the function of demonstrative pronouns in the communication among Pomaks when they use their community language. This is the first sociolinguistic study of Pomak language in Turkey.

- Page Range:36-44
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Agrianes; Rhodopes; Ahryan; Pomak; Strymon
- Summary/Abstract:The population of Bulgarian Rhodopes comprises of Christian and Muslim people. The particular situation in this area is the consequence of historical processes occurring particularly during the period of Ottoman rule in the territory of Bulgaria, which led to the Islamization of part of the population. There are several explanations regarding the origin of the names used to identify the Muslim population in the region. The most commonly used name appears to be Pomak. The ethnonym ahryane is also used, although it does not have a clear etymology. In Greek history, the name originates from the ancient people Agrianes or Agrianians, while Turkish scholars derive it from aren, meaning ‘man’ to indicate the masculinity of the Turks in the area. A third Turkish-Arab theory leads back to the word aharjan, meaning ‘annexed land or subdued later’ (Mitrinov 2011). In the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, the word ahryane is connected to the medieval name of the region of the Eastern Rhodopes Ahrid (Greek Αhridos). Previous research has explored the history and culture of the Muslim population in the region, but the origin of the name Agriani and its local significance today remains unclear. This study aims to fill the knowledge gap by investigating the origin of the name Agriani and its current cultural use for the population.

(The Bulgarian Language In Emigration Or Where The Dialects Live)
- Author(s):Katya Issa
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Sociolinguistics, Stylistics
- Page Range:45-58
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:dialects; mesolect; interferences; immigrant language
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the dialects in the Bulgarian language continuum and the processes of stagnation occurring within them due to the linguistic urbanization of the population. Studies in contemporary sociolinguistics demonstrate the diminishing functions of territorial dialects under the pressure of public opinion, which imposes the imperative of diglossia. The processes are examined from the perspective of interference theory to explain the dependencies between language aging and the extent of interferences within it. The possibilities for contemporary empirical research on dialectal speech are limited for certain reasons – the passing of the oldest speakers, migration to urban areas, and emigration abroad of younger individuals. The author's aim is to propose opportunities for such research in the speech of Bulgarian immigrants in Sydney, Australia.

- Page Range:109-121
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:Negovan notebook; manuscript; Negovan village; dialect
- Summary/Abstract:The Negovan notebook is a manuscript that contains the memories of the teacher Shteryu Popatanasov from the village of Negovan, Thessaloniki. The text contains rich information of a linguistic, ethnographic and historical nature about the Bulgarians from South Macedonia in the past. The object of representation in the article is the linguistic data, which shed additional light on the dialect of the village of Negovan as part of the Bulgarian dialects around the city of Thessaloniki. These data show that the dialect of the village of Negovan represents an interesting Bulgarian dialect type, which simultaneously combines the features of the western and eastern Bulgarian dialects, while also presenting a number of archaic phenomena. The analyzed manuscript confirms the observations of scientists who have studied the same geographical area in the past, and also adds some new features to the already known ones.

- Keywords:Bulgarian language; Slavic studies; language contacts; education
- Summary/Abstract:This article offers a new reading of some works of Dimitar Matov (1864-1896) – a remarkable Bulgarian linguist from the end of 19th century. Despite his short life, his scientific legacy remains as a valuable achievement in Slavic and Balkan studies, and can be seen as a good example of excellent activity in linguistics and ethnography. He was educated in the city of Kharkov, as well as in Vienna, Leipzig and Sofia, and his analyses reflect the level of late 19th-century linguistic scholarship, as they focus mainly on word etymology and historical reconstructions in the tradition of Franz Mikloshić, August Leskien, Gustav Weigand and Vatroslav Jagić. One of the best works of this author, which has a programmatic character, is dedicated to Greek-Bulgarian language contacts. It is obvious that a very large-scale project was conceived, which was even to develop as an academic school in the following decades; however, the early death of the author was a great loss for Balkanology as was noted even then by a number of his contemporaries.

- Keywords:dialects; terminological vocabulary; variation; purity of language
- Summary/Abstract:In this article, the author dwells on a very interesting and important question: what is the place and role of dialects in our modern times and is it permissible to use them today as resources and terminology. At first glance, this question seems strange, but it is becoming more and more relevant, especially considering the uncontrolled and increasingly massive invasion of our vocabulary and terminology by absolutely unnecessary and superfluous foreign words. Of course, this issue is complex and controversial. There are different opinions on it, and perhaps there cannot be a definite and unequivocal answer. But it should be brought to the attention of linguists, at least because it is the duty of all scientists and intellectuals to save the Bulgarian vocabulary in general and the Bulgarian terminology in particular from their de-Bulgarianization.

- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Eastern Slavic Languages
- Page Range:237-254
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:taxis; modality; inferential; perfect; mood
- Summary/Abstract:The article comments on the interrelations between the morphological verbal categories of perfects, moods, the inferential and taxis. In Bulgarian, their grammemes are related, albeit in different ways, to modality, to the speaker’s attitude (expressed through the forms) towards various circumstances regarding the realisation and reference of the action. In some cases, this attitude is subjective (e.g. in the case of moods), in others it is objective, but with reference to the perception and veridicality of the verbal action. Taxis in Bulgarian is a modalised category.

This work analyzes the reasons: semantic, social, sociolinguistic, semiotic, psycholinguistic and pragmatic, which condition this process. Its consequences are also brought out – both for the external form of speech, and at a deeper level for the composition and structure of the vocabulary and for changes at the grammatical level.

- Summary/Abstract:The topic of the article examines problems of the semantics of diminutive nouns, which are an element of the lexical fund of any language. The investigated diminutives were found in fairy tales of the Bulgarian writer Angel Karaliychev and the German authors Grimm Brothers, compared with their translated texts. The purpose of the study is to establish and summarize some important morphosemantic features of the diminutives in the Bulgarian and German languages, using the comparative method of linguistic analysis. Problems are presented, such as the essence of diminutiveness as a derivational process, the interrelationships between the elements of the word in connection with the formation of its semantics. The results of the study would provide answers to questions in the field of word formation, lexicology and linguistics in general.

- Keywords:Elizabeth Barrett Browning; responsivity; responsibility; self-consciousness; time; death
- Summary/Abstract:This paper seeks to find the connecting tissue in a range of poems Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote mostly between 1840 and 1860. I focus on some prominent examples of the poet’s sensitive, responsive and dutiful way of reflecting on life as a phenomenal domain in need of narration as dialogue between human beings. From the earliest works (e.g. “A Woman’s Shortcomings”, “The Poet and the Bird”) to the last (e.g. “A Child’s Grave at Florence” and “Question and Answer”) in the said time, Barrett Browning exposes writing as an indispensable tool for maintaining an ontology not untypical of women yet overwhelmingly self-conscious in its profound denial of subjectivity for the sake of comprehending time as the infinity of an Other (after Bakhtin) at the heart of one’s own perception. Ultimately, my aim is to illustrate that responsivity and responsibility overlap in a hermeneutically insightful way as two pivotal concepts that underpin Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s thought.

- Keywords:similar; repetition; auto textual; mimetic; Maupassant
- Summary/Abstract:This text presents the specifics of the auto textual repetition in two fiction stories by Maupassant – Le Horla and Lettre d'un fou. In both works it follows the different language transformations between two similar passages. The text makes linguistic systematization of the changes found and explains their meaningful projections in the entire stories. Our hypothesis, which explains these modifications, suggests a doubt in the mimetic representation and the repetition and similarity’s ability to give realism to the narration.

Based on folk beliefs and superstitions, it is spiritually close to collective ideas and for this reason it is able to satisfy the psychological needs of the children's emotional world. Folklore is the wealth of a nation and thanks to it, the essence of creativity in everyday life and the soul of a nation is revealed.
