Summary/Abstract: In the process of communication, people express their opinions to each other, focusingnot only on the exchange of information, but also on a respectful or friendly attitude towards theinterlocutor. This is the concept of “politeness”, which is an inherent attribute of everyday communication. This article presents the most important linguistic theories of politeness and shows how theyintertwine with related subjects. Politeness, as an element of everyday communication, ensures astable and conflict-free process because it is a regulator of human behaviour. We do not normallythink of politeness in everyday life, rather, we become aware of this phenomenon only when weexperience its violations: a “thank you” that is not heard, a greeting that is barely responded to, aform of address that we perceive as inappropriate. Defining politeness in everyday life is, therefore, difficult and is usually done using alternative terms such as behaviour, respect, decency, good manners
