Summary/Abstract: European seas and oceans are a rich and often underestimated source of innovation, growth and employment. They provide valuable eco system services and resources on which all marine activities depend. The sustainable development of the blue economy is of paramount importance for the development of maritime tourism. The blue economy and blue growth are topics related to the future of the maritime sector. The growth potential of the maritime economy is an opportunity that Europe should take advantage of as a sea continent. Since 2009, the EU has launched key initiatives in all policy areas related to the seas to enhance Europe's competitiveness.
