Summary/Abstract: A linguistic cliché is not a new problem for linguistics. Nevertheless, certain hesitations arise due to different interpretations of the concept, which is examined in the narrower or wider sense. Its traditional interpretation relates it to the institutional socio-cultural sphere and associates it with business communication and formal-business style. This paper analyses the functioning of linguistic cliché in and outside business communication, and makes distinctions proceeding primarily from the perspective of socio-linguistics. It turns out that a cliché performs different functions in different socio-cultural spheres, even in different speech situations - from formally supportive to behaviourally motivated ones.
