Summary/Abstract: Conference Proceedings “Linguistics: History, Challenges, Perspectives” (2015) are dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Prof. Dr. Ivan Kochev. The papers which are part of the Proceedings are close to Prof. Kochev’s diverse research interests. There are several sections – the first contains the plenary reports of Prof. Emilia Pernishka; Prof. Lilia Ilieva (1774), Prof. Antony Stoilov and Prof. Anna Choleva-Dimitrova. Their papers cover different linguistic topics, especially related to South-Slavic and Balkan linguistics. The second section is named “Dialectology. History of language. Word Formation” and it comprises 13 papers written by 15 researchers. The next section is called “Comparative and Contrastive Linguistics. Foreign Languages” and contains 13 papers as well. Authors are from different countries and their work includes various languages. The forth part of the Proceedings “Lexicology and Lexicography of Bulgarian language” incorporates papers of 10 researchers from Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Albania, dealing with some problems of modern and historical lexicology/ lexicography in Slavic and Balkan context. The fifth section, named “Stylistics and Pragmatics. Language and Communication”, explores the so-called communicative approaches and methods to languages. It includes 10 papers from 13 Bulgarian and foreign linguists. The next part “Grammar of Contemporary Bulgarian Language” includes texts devoted to Bulgarian morphology and syntax. The last section is called “Interactive Teaching Methods” and it concerns some pedagogical issues.

- Summary/Abstract:In 1774 Johanne Gotthilf Stritter published Bulgarica ex scriptores Byzantinis as a part of his work on the history of Slavic and some non-Slavic people. His voluminous work was one of the two main sources used in the book History of Bulgaria, published in 1802 by Athanasij Neškocić (who used as additional source an unknown historical work by a Catholic Bulgarian au-thor). This book has influenced the works of Serbian writer Jovan Sterija Popović and also had a significant effect on educated Bulgarian people, so Stritter’s history had some impact on the pro-cesses of Bulgarian National Revival.

- Summary/Abstract:The study encompasses the settlement names in the valley of Struma River. The Names are taken from 3 former regions: Blagoevgrad, Petrich, Sandanski. The study is based on written sources only. Special attention is devoted to old records of settlement names. The region was not affected by strong migratory processes during the Otoman rule the way some other regions of Bulgar-ia were; the population in its greater part was Bulgarian and that is why the oikonyms are predomi-nantly Bulgarian in their origin. Studying the old records of settlement names allows to trace the stages in the development of the oikonym system. Even until present days it has preserved many archaic components – rare and dialectic words: Debochitsa, Moshtanets, Suhostrel; names with an-cient origin: Krupnik, Logodash, Mechkul; ancient personal names or nicknames: Kardzhevo, Oshta-va, Hotovo, Tsalim. The names are part of the Bulgarian linguistic heritage.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper aims at studying the different types of residues from the infinitive forms, which are kept in the Bulgarian dialects. The use of the infinitive in the Bulgarian dialects in the re-gions of Gora (in the Republic of Albania) and Sredska Zhupa (in the Republic of Kosovo) is exam-ined. The paper proved that Bulgarian dialects in Gora and Sredska Zhupa do not know the forms of the infinitive. With this feature they are associated closely with the Bulgarian dialects, despite its prox-imity territorially to areas which speak Serbian.

It is associated with unutilized wild-life, disorder and chaos. Naked man becomes a non-person, receives unexplained power, becomes a mediator between the real and the imaginary world of evil forces. Naked man comes into contact with them, acquires skills to fight and to win. The garment is a cultural achievement, which protects. Nudi-ty is used in magic and for healing of diseases, it serves as punishment and purification. It is an ele-ment of pagan and Christian rituals.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents some peculiarities of the phonological systems of the two ancient dialects in the far southeastern part of the Bulgarian language territory, the Strandja mountain (Bur-gas district), namely the dialect of the Hasseki a (Malko Tǎrnovo) region spoken in East Strandja and the dialect of the Faki a region spoken in West Strandja. These peculiarities are the result of the independent development of the above-mentioned dialect systems, despite their centuries long coex-istence in this area. Furthermore, they highlight their unique status among the other dialects within the ancient South Bulgarian language continuum as well as their genelogical relations with them.

- Summary/Abstract:The article analyzes the manuscript fragment Nr. 2P-B from RHM – Gabrovo. The paleographical characteristics show that the fragment is not written by the hand of the scribe that produces the famous Vatican copy of the Bulgarian translation of Constantine Manasses’es Chroni-ca (Vat. Slav. 2), as RHM officially states. The textual analysis presents arguments that the frag-ment is not a leaf of a Parimejnik at all, but rather a piece of a 14th c. Triodion of the Athonite re-cension.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is focused on the word-formation of ethnonyms and names of inhabitants in the Constantine Manasses Chronicle from 14th century (Cod. Vaticanus, slav. II). From methodologi-cal aspect the analysis in the work is based on the theoretical postulates of the Czech linguist M. Dokulil (1962). They were applied for the first time in Bulgaria by Ivan Kochev when working with dialectal material in 1971. The conclusions of the word-formation analysis refers to the place and the volume of each of word-formation types and to the competition between the suffixes.

- Summary/Abstract:In the contribution I deal with the topic of Anglicisms in German language, whereas I explore their status in German language textbooks for secondary school students. First I define the term, then I classify Anglicisms according to the degree of naturalization in the lexis of German language and concentrate on the most common parts of speech of Anglicisms together with examples. Thereafter I explore the distribution of Anglicisms according the parts of speech in German language textbooks, the typology of loan words from English and their frequency in various topics and parts of textbooks of German as a foreign language.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is a first attempt at a more detailed presentation of the manuscript of the German-Bulgarian dictionary by Geo Milev, completed in 1916, and its print edition from 1940, re-vised by Dimitar Stoevski and published by Ivan Koyumdzhiev, in the context of other bilingual dic-tionaries with German and Bulgarian from the same period. This paper is a modest contribution to the study of the history of bilingual lexicography for German and Bulgarian.

- Summary/Abstract:It is natural that the names of body parts are among the most frequent lexicon used in our everyday life. Most of the phraseological expressions in which one of its elements stands for the name of body parts, belong to our everyday speech, concerning the semantic source. Such names are very productive in creating phraseological expressions. But, which is the status and role of these elements? Do they create a single semantic field as they are used in their literal meaning ? The names of body parts receive different metaphorical meanings in phraseoplogical expressions. Their quantity, quality, types and the symbolic roles depend on the recognition of a certain culture. Thus, their different functions may change according to the language they belong to. In this study we noticed that the expressions containg the words head and heart as the comprising element were frequently encountered and bore different metaphorical values in both languages, Albanian and French.

- Summary/Abstract:The principle aim of this article is to conduct an inquiry on one of the most important thesis of the 19th century linguistic studies, the principle of inner form, as well as to demonstrate that the inner form of the language which serves as a means of expressing the psychic content of it, is the most concrete and evident demonstration of the particular features and special characteristics a lan-guage possesses, especially in terms of dialectical lexicon and phraseology. A contrastive analysis of Albanian and Bulgarian phraseological units appeared of great interest and provided us a lot of evidence to fully justify the fact that during the process of shaping and structurally formalizing the basic idiomatic patterns, people have dissolved their spirit, their mentality, as well as their life style and material culture.

- Summary/Abstract:Idiomaticity is a common feature of Indo-European languages. The aim of this paper is to highlight a new perspective on the classification of English and Albanian idioms (and other fixed expressions) according to their functions in discourse. These text functions of idioms may be classified according to the way they contribute to the content and overall structure of a certain text. The roles idioms have in real-time discourse are no less significant than their lexical, syntactic and semantic characteristics. Being based on the theories and classifications of some English scholars (M. A. K. Halliday, C.Fernando, R. Moon), we have tried to make a classification of Albanian idioms as well. The examples we have classified are collected from English and Abanian novels.

- Summary/Abstract:The object of research of this study are the nouns expressing similarity with stems of Greek origin and Bulgarian suffix. The material has been excerpted from various Bulgarian etymo-logical dictionaries, as well as from research works devoted to Greek loanwords in Bulgarian. With regard to methodology, the paper is based on a complex method combining the theoretical syn-chronic formulations of the Czech linguist M. Dokulil and the diachronic ones of the etymological-historical method. Hybrid formations are put to a word-building analysis and are classified by word-formative types.

Ethnopholisms include slang words, orthophemisms, which are not political correct, and offending/ironic attacks to public persons and ethnic groups. In contrast to media texts, when there are euphemisms and ethnopholisms, in media headings they are considered as politically incorrect nominations. The ethnonyms have hesitant stylistic statute. Sometimes, in some context, politically correct ethnonymes do not approve evaluation of certain ethnic groups.

- Summary/Abstract:In this study we refer to a topic which had greatly been treated in the diachronic studies of the Albanian language, but focused on a different perspective, we hope to through light, continue, and fulfill the research further on in the future. In this beginning, we have tried to give a short diachronic presentation of “the fate” of slavisms in the beginnigs of the Albanian writings, to continue with the first lexicographic Albanian work, the dictionary of Franciscus Blanchus in 1635 up to the latest dictionary in 2006. Sufficed with the evidentation of the words in the dictionary, we aim to give a semantic approach of these words in the future, which would be cruical even for other determinations being in abeyance in the recent studies.

- Summary/Abstract:Most of the Iranian borrowed words in Bulgarian are considered to be of Persian origin and to be a result of five centuries Bulgarian-Turkish ethno-cultural and linguistic relations, i.e. coming from Turkish like a number of Arabic words, borrowed in Bulgarian during the time when Bulgaria was a part of the Ottoman Empire. The study of Iranian borrowed words from etnolingvistic point of view shows that some of them could have been borrowed earlier. These are the names of headscarves сокай // сукай, санкуле, шал, тюлбèн, тюрбан, пош, чембер, пешкùр and пештемал which also belong to the group of so-called Turkish loanwords.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines some features of nicknames in Blagoevgrad - their semantic mo-tivation and word-formation. Most of the nicknames are used with semantically changed (narrowed or expanded) meaning. Outstanding are the nicknames that have completely opposite semantic mo-tivation for its creation. Overall the word-formative models for the creation of Blagoevgrad nick-names coincide with the ways of word-formation in youth speech.

- Summary/Abstract:The knowledge of a nation is closely related to the knowledge of its culture. It is the language that is the instrument which enables the creation of a detailed picture of the values, tradi-tions, and beliefs of a certain people. Literature is additionally intertwined with the process of cul-ture acquisition. Names and nicknames in Bulgarian literature are an example of symbolism and therefore, this paper is an attempt to overview the anthroponyms and nicknames in “Nemili-Nedragi” by Ivan Vazov. Symbolic names are to be semantically analyzed and the nicknames will be categorized in accordance with their symbolic meaning.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper is an attempt to present the variety of literary and dialectal terms and notions related to pregnancy and the notion of pregnant woman in Bulgarian (i.e. conditions, signs and processes in relation to pregnancy). - Summary/Abstract:This paper is an attempt to present a different perspective in the theory of intonation in Bulgarian linguistic literature. The role of intonation in communication process is underlined. We base our arguments mainly on the Relevance theory (RT) and consider intonation as a code of in-structions for interpreting the morpho-syntactic content of the utterance. Using this code the listener reduces his efforts to get to the speaker`s meaning. This and other functions of intonation as a meta-level presume a discussion for the possibility intonation to be considered as a manifestation of speech economy.

- Summary/Abstract:The written language is the base of the vocal one which presents a new step in the de-velopment of the speech. The elements of the vocal system of the vocal speech are represented by defined graphic signs. The linear character of the place of the vowels and consonants from the vocal speech is transformed in consecutive situating the letters in the space. The writing is an independent and a complementary help for the sign system, which is used for fixing the vocal speech in the act of communication.

- Summary/Abstract:A linguistic cliché is not a new problem for linguistics. Nevertheless, certain hesitations arise due to different interpretations of the concept, which is examined in the narrower or wider sense. Its traditional interpretation relates it to the institutional socio-cultural sphere and associates it with business communication and formal-business style. This paper analyses the functioning of linguistic cliché in and outside business communication, and makes distinctions proceeding primarily from the perspective of socio-linguistics. It turns out that a cliché performs different functions in different socio-cultural spheres, even in different speech situations - from formally supportive to behaviourally motivated ones.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article the receptions of analysis of text of artistic works are examined in the light of the development of the printed media language style of the Standard Russian. On the exam-ples of word usages, typical for the magazine articles of the early twentieth century is proved that expressions of social and aesthetic estimation, typical for Russian opposition journalism of pre-Revolutionary epoch, come to light, reflecting the ideological and literary preferences of critics – authors of the journal «The Present» (Sovremennost), one of the most popular and authoritative Rus-sian printed.

- Summary/Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to present three types of reported utterances with dubitative (бил четял, бил чел, щял бил да чете, щял бил да е чел) in Bulgarian language: dubitative in quoted speech, indirect speech and directly reported speech. The third type called directly reported speech with dubitative, on one hand, doesn’t include the actual speech of the narrator as a first part of the utterance, in contrast to the utterances with indirect speech. On the other hand, the changed evi-dential status of the verb reduces differences between the indirect speech and the directly reported speech. Both the similarities and the differences prove the hypothesis that the directly reported speech with dubitative takes an intermediate position in the continuum quoted speech : indirect speech in Bulgarian.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper explores the so called dubitative in Bulgarian which represents a unique morphological strategy for expressing doubt, uncertainty, irony, etc. Structured as a member of the peripheral structure of evidential system in Bulgarian, those forms exhibit doubling of resultative grammatical marker (-l morpheme) usually used as a marker expressing evidentiality, in our case purposefully used to express meanings from the domain of both – modality and evidentially. The paper discusses the semantic and functional features of the forms – paradigmatically presented in comparison with the unmarked indicative forms. Some conclusions are drawn from the data pre-sented in the paper.

- Summary/Abstract:A specific phenomenon of Bulgarian language is the homonymy between argument dative clitics and possessive clitics. This paper presents an analysis of ambiguous sentences with a dative clitic in verb-adjacent position. Usually, it is the clausal Dative position but the possibility of having a possessive interpretation proves that here possessive pronouns can appear after their movement outside the DP (the so-called “possessor raising”). Two distinct constructions expressing possession are recognized – with possessive clitic in a DP-external position and with an argument dative clitic as external possessor.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper analyzes the reasons for nongrammatical usage of two direct objects in same verbal clause. One of the elements is internal, cognate object. Mainly, that kind of verbal construction is stylistically marked. That structure is found in Bulgarian folklore lines as a result from syntactic contamination. The process of phraseologisation of figura etymologica also reflects on dou-ble direct object usage.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper summarizes the results of a case study on the implementation of a blended learning approach to the foreign language teaching at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. After a short description of the general features of the course, students’ answers to anonymous question-naires are discussed. The latter contain feedback on their attitude to and opinion of three topics delivered entirely online. Thus, some general conclusions regarding the implemented methodology as well as conclusions about the particular course are drawn.
