Summary/Abstract: Drago Jančar is one of the most prolific and frequently translated contemporary Slovenian writers. He is a prosaist, an author of short stories and novels, a playwright and a multiple award-winning essayist. As an essayist, he always responded to the current questionsabout the historical role of Slovenians in former Yugoslavia, in the context of Central Europe,in the times of Slovenian independence and those of entering the European Union. Jančar’s word always drew a lot of attention and initiated polemical responses. This paper discusses his essay-writing in relation to the forementioned problems.
