Summary/Abstract: The paper provides a typology of the symbolic roles that is performed in the Macedonian social discourses by the Macedonian encyclopedia (Македонска енциклопедија, МАНУ, Скопје 2009). This first edition of the Macedonian popular scientific encyclopedia has casued many polemics at the national and international level, while their essence thematizes again the question of the modern Macedonian identity paradigms. the Macedonian encyclopedia is not just a set of normative concepts and passwords, but it primarily becomes a semiotic category, which is involved in the formation process of the canon of the contemporary national culture. At the same time, the Macedonian encyclopedia helps to create a wider social discourse platform for discussion of its conception and symbolic borders.
