Summary/Abstract: An exquisite connoisseur and translator of the Holy Scripture, Saint Anthim the Iberian is deeply convinced that there can be no sermon outside the Holy Scripture; the only sermon that can be conceived is the one permanently connected to the Holy Scripture and to the traditional patristic legacy he accessed through Greek, the language in which the Holy Fathers’ works – that circulated at that time in Eastern Orthodoxy – were written. The study of his Didache reveals its tight connection to this theological thesaurus that this hierarch chooses to popularize through sermons, homilies, panegyrics or occasional speeches. Even if the patristic quotations do not abound in the Didache, these writings are replete with instances of the Holy Fathers’ teachings and contain their most important ideas. The present study is based on 14 sermons of Saint Anthim the Iberian. There is an obvious resemblance between him and the Holy Fathers in terms of content and form of their writings, and a thorough study of their works renders it visible.
