  • Summary/Abstract:The Didahs contain several moral teachings, which St. Hierarch Anthim the Iberian put in the hearts of his spiritual sons with great zeal. With a lot of gentleness in the description of virtues or commandments, he always writes at the first plural person, including himself among those in need of salvation. About vices and sins, he did not point any persons as negative example, and did not address them with superiority, but using the third plural person, proves much wisdom and pastoral tact. He was describing virtues with arguments in Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Holy Fathers. About sin he spoke in general, highlighting, among other things, the sin of gossip and oaths.

  • Summary/Abstract:Three centuries after his death, we think of what St. Antim did. God preferred him for the Romanian people, to light and shepherd him on the way to His Heavenly Kingdom. We know that he loved this country, that he dignified the Romanian hierarchical authority against the foreign interference. He was faithful, sincere, diligent, and generous. He has been brought in Wallachia and left, being sent, as a pilgrim and non-earthly as a hand of God extended to a nation with lights and shadows in its multi-secular history. The man, the minister, the hierarch, and Saint Martyr Antim of Iberia became a good Romanian and chosen martyr.

  • Summary/Abstract:The theological approach of Nichifor Crainic provokes the world to dialogue, providing a coherent Christian vision of the meaning of universal history and also of the historical evolution of our culture and spirituality in the wider context of European culture. The concept of „pseudo morphosis” defines, according to Crainic’s own formulation, „the capture of a primitive soul in the foreign forms of an advanced culture.” In his diagnosis of Romanian culture and civilization, as well as of Orthodox theology, the Romanian theologian meets, to a certain extent, the critique of „forms without substance”. Nichifor Crainic sees only one way out of the impasse, consisting in abandoning the lost way and returning to the real sources of Romanian culture and spirituality.

  • Summary/Abstract:The activity of printing began in the Diocese Râmnic in the first half of the seventeenth century, through the care of Prince Matei Basarab, who will use his connections with Metropolitan Petru Movila of Kiev to bring a printing company and craftsmen, who were seated at Govora monastery, here been printed five books (in five years). In the eighteenth century, cultural activity in the Diocese of Ramnic reaches its climax, first under the leadership of Saint Antim Ivireanul, who will bring again the technique of printing on these lands, by printing nine books, and then under the leadership of bishop Damaschin The Teacher, a great scholar, a militant for replacing in the cult of Slavonic with the Romanian language. He has devoted his entire activity to the translation of religious ritual books in Romanian, having a great contribution to the formation of Romanian literary language. Although printed least in life, his work has been exploited by his successors until 1825. Typography from Râmnic contributed to the defense of Orthodoxy in Transylvania, threatened by Catholic proselytism, especially after the events of 1698-1701. Books printed here were widely circulating in Transylvania, Maramureș and Banat.

  • Summary/Abstract:The original sermons by St. Anthim the Iberian (Didahs) include 28 preach to the great feasts, 7 for occasions, 3 for funeral, 2 for confession, and a sermon for the parastasis. The Holy Scripture occupies a special place for writing of sermons by St. Anthim at Târgovişte and Bucharest. Among the sacred books he cited in his work, there are many references to certain verses and passages in the Epistle to the Hebrews, which receive great exegesis from the great Metropolitan.

  • Summary/Abstract:An exquisite connoisseur and translator of the Holy Scripture, Saint Anthim the Iberian is deeply convinced that there can be no sermon outside the Holy Scripture; the only sermon that can be conceived is the one permanently connected to the Holy Scripture and to the traditional patristic legacy he accessed through Greek, the language in which the Holy Fathers’ works – that circulated at that time in Eastern Orthodoxy – were written. The study of his Didache reveals its tight connection to this theological thesaurus that this hierarch chooses to popularize through sermons, homilies, panegyrics or occasional speeches. Even if the patristic quotations do not abound in the Didache, these writings are replete with instances of the Holy Fathers’ teachings and contain their most important ideas. The present study is based on 14 sermons of Saint Anthim the Iberian. There is an obvious resemblance between him and the Holy Fathers in terms of content and form of their writings, and a thorough study of their works renders it visible.

  • Summary/Abstract:In the period of the XVII Century the Romanian Countries where in a continuous development and searching of new spirituals and cultural systems. The Turkish occupation tried to create a favourable context in his process of oppression. However, God put in his economy some very special persons which came to enforce the old spiritual and cultural traditions of our Romanian nation. In this concern, in our study we will try to discover the apologetical characteristics of two from the most important saints and political roller of the Romanian Country. It is about the Saints Constantin Brâncoveanu and Antim Ivireanul and their important role in the process of confession and defending our Orthodox faith. Also, we will try to underline the cultural implication and heritage from the period of their activity. On the one hand, Saint Constantin Brâncoveanu was a very important Christian benefactor and founder of churches, monasteries, schools, hospitals etc. On the other hand, Saint Antim from Iviria, who was also bishop at Ramnic, is very important in the life of the Orthodox Church because he printed many liturgical and theological books. The two of the where very good collaborators in a Christian point of view. The end of their lives is quite similar because the booth of them past in the God Heven like martyrs.

  • Summary/Abstract:Cette présentation se propose de faire savoir quatre documents, écrits en roumain aux caractères cyrilliques, émis par l’Antim Ivireanul, évêque de Râmnic et puis métropolite de la Valachie (1708-1716). Les documents proviennent des Archives nationales historiques centrales de Bucarest, des fonds „Mitropolia Țării Românești”, „Episcopia Argeș”, „Episcopia Râmnic”, de la collection „Suluri” et sont chronologiquement présentés. La reproduction de ces documents est effectuée à la fin de la chaque transcription (faite au langage de l’époque) précédée à son tour d’un bref résumé. Un document est authentifié au grand sceau rond du métropolite imprimé à l’encre de Chine et un autre document est prévu, dans son frontispice, avec une composition héraldique impressionnante. Pour la description du sceau et des armoiries, nous avons appelé à la sigillographie et à l’héraldique.

  • Summary/Abstract:Par son activité pastorale, impression et missionnaire à Râmnic et plus tard à Bucarest, St. Anthim a incarné le vrai berger qui met l’âme „pour ses brebis”, s’élevant au-dessus d’elle tous les hiérarques qui ont passé avant et après lui sur la banquette de la métropolitaine de la Valachie. En plus de livres imprimés, beaucoup d’entre eux en roumaine, s’est révélée pour être un bon gestionnaire de l’église, préoccupé par les besoins des fidèles et les prêtres dont il a passé. En plus de s’occuper du peuple romain, a contribué à restaurer, reconstruire et embellissement et même les temples de la construction du Saint, au moment qu’il a passé le diocèse. Documents à portée de main il nous s’asseyait sur son implication pour augmenter la richesse du primat du diocèse, par l’achat de terres, d’où elle procède avec des peintures et la réparation des églises, tandis que d’autres construisent au sol. Dans un signe d’appréciation d’activités et son sacrifice, notre Église l’a passé parmi les saints, célébré le 27 Septembre

All the skill and all the knowledge that he has accumulated during his life as a slave, but also within the Ecumenical Patriarchate, he put them in the service of the church culture and the Romanian faithful who received it with all the affection.

  • Summary/Abstract:The Burning Bush Movement at the Antim Monastery represented a unique case of symbiosis between laic intellectuals and monasticism, which promoted a spiritual form of anti-communist resistance centred on the practice of the Prayer of the Heart. The activity of the “Burning Bush of the Mother of God” Association during the mid-1940s consisted in weekly conferences on various subjects of theology and apologetics. Debates were doubled by participation in religious services and prayer, which created both a specific spiritual ethos and functioned as a missionary coordinate. While exploring the missionary and monastic ethos belonging to the “Burning Bush”, the paper attempts to inquire the validity and importance of such a model to nowadays monasticism.

Thus, his words have multiplied faith and strengthened the beliefs of those who were born hundreds of years away in the lands he had crossed. The priests who suffered during the communist regime were able to resist the executioners with the power of faith and with the support of saints’ prayers.

  • Summary/Abstract:The 19th century represents the golden age of byzantine music in the Romanian Principalities. During this period extensive translations were conducted from Greek and priceless original masterpieces were composed. As to what concerns the polyeleos, translations were favoured during the first half of the century, whereas a great many original scores were penned during the second half of the century. Likewise, the musical style changed, going from sticheraric versions to the irmologic, syntomon ones, a sign that music began to be in better accordance not only with the language, but also with the tastes of the public. The polyeleos was very widely spread, being surpassed, we believe, only by the Axion and Heruvic, a sign of the consideration that it was given by the composers of the time. Amongst all the polyeleos compositions, the one by Petru Lampadarie, translated and adapted to Romanian by Macarie the Hyeromonach, stands out both due to its beauty as well as to the abundancy with which it can be found in manuscripts and prints.

  • Summary/Abstract:Nowadays, the right to life is more and more debated. Abortion, medically assisted procreation and euthanasia represent daily topics of discussion. Given the sensitivity of the questions relating to the right to life, “the national margin of appreciation” is highlighted. It is unanimously recognized that it involves cultural, social, economic, medical or legal factors. Our research shows that, in the perception of the Christian-orthodox jurists working at the European Court of Human Rights and having agreed to be part of our sample, the religious factor is also a defining element of the margin of appreciation invoked in the context of the article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms
