Summary/Abstract: Olga and Jenny’s dispute on priority and equality is framed against two other conflicts. One ist hein complete match of language and reality: ‘sister’ is a symmetric relation in the kinship term system but less so according to social tradition. The other is the contest between pragmatics, which Olga relies on, and semantics, which Jenny appeals to. The elder sister’s failure to adapt her argument to the situation almost costs her the sought domination. So how does this dialogue translate to languages where kin terms reflect relative age?
