Summary/Abstract: Plants are the universal symbols of the human spiritual culture. They form a vegetable code and through that code they build up and transmit a whole message. The Bulgarian language is especially rich with names of plants. In this report is mentioned the etymology of the name marshmallow and the derivative names. Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.) has received its name from Greek, which means „heal“. Many of the plant species have healing properties. The common names of the marshmallow are: bozha ruchitsa, byal slez, volovo oko, wild marshmallow, prosvirnyak, prusvornik, staliiska ruzha, marshmallow and others. Folk names of the marshmallow are classified according to motivational characteristics – color, properties, place of origin and others. The marshmallow plant is widely used in folk medicine.
