Summary/Abstract: Increased interests of 19th century scientists in entomological names resulted from considerable terminological confusion in the field. Attempts at systematizing the existing terms and introducing new ones, more adequately reflecting the features of specific butterflies, were made, among others, by Teofil Żebrawski in his monograph „Owady łuskoskrzydłe czyli motylowate z okolic Krakowa” and Maksymilian Siła Nowicki in two works considered as fundamental by his contemporaries: „Projekt polskiéj nomenklatury motylów krajowych” and „Motyle Galicyi”. This article provides an overview of the “butterly terminology” proposed in these works.
