Summary/Abstract: The volume constitutes the gleanings of the 1st Congress of the Historians of (a) Language which was held in Katowice. The purpose of this scholarly meeting was to present the scholarly accomplishments of historical linguistics which were achieved heretofore and to present the most important research plans of the discipline. Almost 150 scholars who represent this field participated in the Congress. The participants engaged various themes which arranged themselves in the following subject blocks: I. The methodological dilemmas of modern diachronic linguistics II. Historical-linguistic research and the universal problems of linguistics III. The sources which are used in diachronic research IV. Lexicology and lexicography V. The regional Polish language and the dialects VI. Communication. Genology. Stylistics VII. The historical-linguistic knowledge in university education The volume features a very important supplement in the form of a transcript and a report of two panel discussions which focused on the following problems: 1. “The research and methodological challenges of historical linguistics”; 2. “The teaching-related tasks of historians in reference to the national communicative community in the past and in the present”. The opinions of the representatives of the scholarly community about the position of diachronic linguistics in linguistic research, the opinions about the fundamental problems and dilemmas are certainly relevant to all people who are interested in the progress of the research in (a) language. The value of the present volume is further enhanced by the last part which is devoted to the events which celebrated the conferring of the name of a distinguished linguist, Irena Bajerowa, to the Institute of the Polish Language of the University of Silesia. The opinions of the Friends, Family Members and the Students which were preserved represent the scholarly and, at the same time, the cordial nature of this significant event.

  • Summary/Abstract:Joanna Przyklenk in her article devoted to the relations between historical linguistics and sociolinguistics focuses on three main issues. Firstly, she presents several ideas that are common to both disciplines. Secondly, the strong link between historical and social attitude in linguistics is considered in the shape of historical sociolinguistics, subdiscipline whose beginnings are dated back to 1980s in the West. In the paper its roots, theoretical background and the current state of research are discussed. Thirdly, the author takes an attempt to characterize the contemporary Polish studies, trying to describe these works in the context of the foregoing periodizations of the Polish studies on language history. Detecting an inspiration in historical sociolinguistics for Polish-oriented investigation, she points out these areas of diachronic enquiry that thanks to socio-lingual view could develop historical linguistics itself.

  • Summary/Abstract:Studying history of language is the oldest area of linguistics, as its beginnings can be traced back to the 19th century. Hence, it has functioned and developed under changing scientific paradigms, adopting their methods of description and ways of approaching research material. The subject of interest in the discipline is particularly broad, as it encompasses the entirety of texts and phenomena that appeared in the past. The description of linguistic phenomena in broad cultural and social context remains the main objective of historical linguistics; as a result, it benefits from the insights provided by many disciplines such as history, sociology, communication studies, cultural studies, and literary criticism. The 21st century brought new opportunities for the development of historical linguistics, which was enabled by two factors: development of digital technologies and the Internet and emergence of new research methods. The former has widened the access to historical material thanks to digital libraries and the development of electronic dictionaries which register lexical resources in different stages of language evolution. The latter has made it possible to present a new synthesis of the history of Polish from the perspective of such disciplines as historical sociolinguistics, linguistic genre studies, and communication studies.

  • Summary/Abstract:The article presents historical genre studies as one of the sub-disciplines practiced within philology, and rooted theoretically in general genre studies, as it takes over from this source the conceptual apparatus and the agreed and/or disputable theoretical problems and the methods of their solving accessible at a given time. Being a part of genre studies, it draws inspiration from a few disciplines that have already been annexed by this discipline, i.e. from textual studies, stylistics or discourse analysis, yet extending the scope of connections with history of the language. The primary object of research of the genre studies mainstream under discussion is genres of speech analyzed from the historical perspective. Detailed issues may appear in different aspects. Researchers of historical phenomena focus especially on the following problems: 1) origin (in this case, origin of genres), 2) processes of crystallization of their patterns, 3) temporally embedded metamorphoses, 4) circumstances (including causes) of changes (especially the cultural context), 5) (evolutionary or sudden) nature of transformations. Epistemic paths may be arranged in diverse configurations. A pretty expressive issue comprises history of a particular genre of speech or a set of genres related to history of a given cultural (discursive) community.

  • Summary/Abstract:In this article the author pays particular attention to the issue of translocation of elements of linguistic category. It is about the language units, which are either the residues of an old category, or they lose the relation with the primary set despite its existence. Hence, the writer is interested in the approach to language evolution in the light of [through the prism of] processes related to ripping off the units that belong to a given category. The study over the possibility of analysed transformations, determination of necessary conditions for their coming into existence, or the analysis of the reasons for the assimilations [becoming similar] (to the basic source of translocation), and, ultimately, systematising the existing knowledge will allow to make an interesting description plane of ensuing language transformations; the plane which is more different than ever, and yet diachronic in its nature.

  • Summary/Abstract:The paper proposes that research on bilingualism of creators of literature – both their personalities and their texts in Polish and in other languages – be considered a separate subfield in the linguistic history of Polish. Some of the problems that emerge are: choice of the language for the creative output, the author’s participation in three communicative communities, transfer and exchange of elements from the space of one language/culture into the space of another language/culture, bilingual speech. We propose a reformulation of the attitude that researchers of Polish linguistic history currently take towards bilingualism of prominent authors: perception of the phenomenon as co-participation of bilingual authors in different cultures, and their contribution to the creation of cross-cultural and even trans-cultural discourse.

  • Summary/Abstract:The typographic era of the Polish language beginned 1521 and 1522. In 1522 „Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta” was published twice in two competitive publishing houses in Cracow. These two editions are the textual basis of the paper. The typographical technology increased the pace of intellectualization of Polish. As result of the process the pace of standardization and graphization of Polish was increased as well. Intellectualization, i.e. increase of the functional efficiency of Polish, should be regarded as the causative predominant feature of gradual transformations of the standard language of that time. Standardization and graphization of Polish should be recognized as subordinate factors towards intellectualization. In beginnings of the typographical era, both complementary effects of intellectualization entered the new phase along with the publication of the first Polish printed books which were addressed to the wide range of readers becoming a good for sale. The analysis of two editions of „Żywot Pana Jezu Krysta” shows that in 1522 there were two diverse so-called particularistic norms, i.e. the diverse catalogues of standard solutions depended on the publishing houses. The hierarchy of the factors presented in the paper should be taken into consideration when the description of transformation of the Polish language at the beginning of the typographical era is intended.

  • Summary/Abstract:A starting point for the considerations presented in the article are the words by Stanisław Urbańczyk who in „Encyklopedia języka polskiego” („Encyclopaedia of the Polish Language”) writes that the task of historical dictionaries is “to depict Polish vocabulary of previous epochs” and “enable researchers to study the development of lexical resources of the Polish language”. The authors are convinced that those two opinions must be extended to include all and not only historical dictionaries. Each stock of words can provide material for historical linguistic studies, especially for the study into lexis, its history, formation and development. Those should be treated as bilingual since the language of a past epoch is nowadays extinct and foreign. Defining the meanings of old lexical units, should the lexicographer try to reconstruct the state of science of that time or refer to his present-day language competence? The authors, by means of numerous examples, present detailed problems with reconstruction of meanings, caused by difficulties with categorisation of designations.   • Summary/Abstract:The agrotechnical work by Crescentius (1571) includes a wide range of specialist vocabulary – one of the most important elements of the specialist language. The development of science, commenced in the 16th century, became reflected in the slowly created nomenclature. The article attempts to show its evolution. The starting point became the names of plants. The material was compared against the traditional nomenclature of the earlier times, the Polish language of the 16th century and the contemporary nomenclature. The examined group of words evinces the continuity of terms appearing in the early stage of shaping specialist languages. They illustrate the state of knowledge in the discussed period of time, the range and sources of specialist lexis; they even constitute the evidence of changes taking place throughout history.

  • Summary/Abstract:This paper is an attempt at describing the sematic field ‘woman in sexual relation’. The basis for the excerption was the lexicographic material included in „Słownik staropolski” edited by S. Urbańczyk nad from Słowosieć – polish wordnet. The material obtained from this both references was subjected to a semic analysis discussed from the viewpoint of the semantic field theory as approached by Ryszard Tokarski. What was considered archisems was kobiecość (femininity) ([Human being+], [Childish–], [Male–]) and sexual relation [Sexual relation+]. The analysed vocabulary group was characterised and comparised in terms of hierarchical relations. Result of analysis of Old Polish and contemporary sematic field suggests existence of binary marked sems: [RELATIONSHIP+/–], [PAYMENT+/–], [NEGATIVE ASSESSMENT+/–].

  • Summary/Abstract:The object of the analysis consists in the metaphorical representation of the concepts-values of the mental sphere in the Old Polish and Middle Polish periods in the plant category. The metaphor a concept is a plant is realised by the use of various words of the lexical field of the plant; I analysed the metaphors which feature the lexeme kwiat [flower] (and its derivatives). The purpose of the article is to direct the reader’s attention to the richness of the realisation of the plant metaphor which represents values in the early ages, to the set of concepts which are thus represented, to the possible relationship of this metaphor with evaluation and a glimpse at its permanence in the Polish language. The metaphor a concept is a plant featuring the lexeme kwiat in the early Polish language was used to refer to concepts which represented various spheres of life – ethical, social, folk values, as well as anti-values, referring above all to the sphere of morality. Therefore the metaphor was used to represent concepts regardless of the evaluations which were ascribed to these concepts. With the course of the development of culture and due to the change of thinking about the world the way the lexemes used in the metaphor a concept is a plant, their frequency and the concepts themselves changed but the plant as a source domain of metaphors continues to be viable in the Polish language.

  • Summary/Abstract:So far, research into the literary achievements of Vilnius-based Philomaths and Filarets has been conducted on the basis of various philological sources (particularly correspondence and individual authors’ works); however, it has not taken into account the translation of the Quran into Polish rendered by Fr Dionizy Chlewiński and Ignacy Domeyko. This resulted from the lack of awareness of the existence of such translation and the lack of sources to conduct studies in this respect. The subject of analysis in this paper is a recently found copy of the lost manuscript of the said two Philomaths from Vilnius. The paper attempts at a reconstruction of the unknown history of the translation and contains a preliminary historical and linguistic description of the newly found source text which is invaluable for contemporary Humanities.

  • Summary/Abstract:The progress of historical research, new interpretation of socio-political events and cultural changes form new premises dissertating for the necessity of creating a new synthesis of the history of the Polish language in Silesia. Thus far noted compendia do not clarify the historical background of the modern linguistic changes taking place in contemporary Silesia. In the article, the author presented the basic methodological assumptions of the proponed synthesis. Description of the issues should focus on two axes. The first one is the evolution of the normalized polish language that is settled in official usage and Silesian writing. This variation is characterized by canon import, system and stylistic archaisms and the development’s irregularity. The latter axis of the description focuses on the issue of the evolution of Silesian dialects in the systematic and functional aspect. The Silesian polish language developed under specific conditions – domination of two languages: Czech and German in particular. Therefore the matters connected with the linguistic policy of the countries, which boarders were Silesian, as well as with the formation of linguistic awareness of Silesians and linguistic changes being the result of postwar immigration will be discussed. The implied range of the description taking into consideration Silesian multiculturalism demand a specified methodological approach. The author formulates some rules that enable to meet those demands. Moreover, he discusses some specific issues such as the cognitive and material values of the studies published in recent years, issues connected with periodization of the historical events, and the canon of sources. The synthesis will be closed by the discussion of the discourse about the Silesian language status that last since the 1990s.

First part of this paper presents characteristics of newer linguistic research carried on basis of sermons in 19th century in comparison to sermons preached prior to this period. In second part the author discusses the perspective of research that she have adopted during own research on sermons created and published in second half of 19th century. The author considers as the most crucial reference the concept of historical and linguistic, also communicative idea developed by Stanisław Borowski that has been associated with category of communicative community as well as its bonding and shaping communicative processes. Equally important to author’s research is generic perspective, which allows to describe meaning and function of religious statement genre, such as sermon, in order to realize communicative needs of religious communicative community. Direction of research within this area is based mainly on the concept of genres created by Maria Wojtak and Bożena Witosz, especially assumptions of historical genology. Another point of view, allowing to discover interesting possibilities of analysis, brings consideration of historical, cultural and social realities that accompanied creating and functioning of preaching texts. Last part presents sample lingual analysis of hell’s image, in which it is including delineated research perspectives. The paper discusses assortment criterion in analyzing preaching texts that are believed to guarantee representativeness of research material.

  • Summary/Abstract:Bartłomiej Groicki and Paweł Szczerbic presented, in Polish, the principles of adapted Magdeburg law, which regulated legal proceedings and communication in the 16th-century municipal judiciary. Their ideas referring to language interaction were broad as they included the participants, space and time as well as text structures. Therefore, the codifiers created an optimal model of institutional communication used in courts which included discursive components and which they firmly introduced into jurisprudence. Codification proposed by Bartłomiej Groicki and Paweł Szczerbic was used during trials in municipal courts between the 16th and 18th centuries. Determining the extent to which that codification was used in courtroom communication is made possible thanks to surviving archived municipal books, compiled in many cities of the First Rzeczpospolita (Republic of Poland). However, the studies recreating the Old Polish language on the basis of these books would have to be aimed at text linguistics and pragmatics, which would include institutional parameters. Such analyses would result in recreating obligatory models of institutional communication used by Polish townspeople, which was influenced by German legislation.

A peculiar element of Sienkiewicz’s writing is humor, sometimes also irony (self-irony).

  • Summary/Abstract:This paper deals with research into the process of evolution of speech genres and attempts to reflect the stages of the transformation of forms of expression representing mass communication since the beginning of its functioning until the present day. Thus, the author focused on a press release as a genre that already appeared in the oldest Polish newspaper, in “Merkuriusz”. The observation covered two stages of the development of the newspaper – the beginning – the seventeenth century and the end: contemporary times. Such an approach towards the text material helped the author compile and compare the constitutive features of the seventeenth-century press messages with the properties which the contemporary definitions and studies ascribe to this genre, and which are important for its development. Conclusions reflecting the evolution of the studied genres are supported by the fact that these periods were milestones in the development of the Polish press – the analysis included to a large extent the specificity of the state of development of the formal and technical means: in the seventeenth century the invention of printing and modernization of post offices were the state-of-the-art technologies, while nowadays these are the technical revolution and the internet.

In both domains appear topic names and – in different shape – realistic or authentic ones. In Old-Polish idyll the conventional proper names perform poetic function, constitute the context for described situations or created scenes, in which significant part concerns the body and sexual spheres of a human being life. On the one hand the author was inspired to take up this theme by headword of Congress of Historical Linguists, ie. „Historical Linguistics – Protecting the Future, Respecting the Past” (Katowice, 13–15 April 2016).   • Summary/Abstract:Ewa Oronowicz-Kida and Agnieszka Myszka try to answer a question whether knowledge about the history of language may be interesting for former grammar school pupils. The authors analyse the position of historical and language issues in the national curriculum at all levels of school education and use a questionnaire to check knowledge of former secondary school pupils in this respect. An analysis of questionnaires leads us to conclusion that recent secondary school graduates know selected issues from the history of language, but they lack any knowledge about historical grammar. However, young people see in contemporary Polish language certain phenomena resulting from development of language that they would like to have explained. The authors are of the opinion that, at the level of university education, you cannot resign from relaying at least basic knowledge about mechanisms of language development, however, it should be done in close connection with an analysis of literature and culture.

The author shows how to use the text “Dworzanin polski” Ł.   • Summary/Abstract:In his academic work, Professor Witold Mańczak (1924–2012) explored thoroughly the questions of general and comparative linguistics of Indo-European, particularly Romance and Slavic, languages; especially the irregular phonetic development caused by frequency. He applied this concept to the Polish etymology, which bore fruit in a form of „Polish Etymological Dictionary” (in Polish; Kraków 2017, 238 pp. + CD-ROM).   • Summary/Abstract:The article presents the author’s book „Wyrażenia funkcyjne w średniowiecznej polszczyźnie z perspektywy składniowej” (Mika, Słoboda, 2015). This monograph is a syntactic addendum to the lexical research carried out as a part of the project “Polish functional expressions in diachronic perspective”. The problems discussed in this book are not homogeneous. Their different types are described in the subsequent chapters: at first the authors remind basic methodological difficulties in description of functional expressions, especially those appearing when you want to consider functional expressions in terms of syntax, not lexis. Then, there are indicated the problems with medieval source material and related interpretation difficulties. In the next part of the book the authors suggest their own methodology: the tendencies identified in „Składnia średniowiecznej polszczyzny” (Krążyńska, Mika, Słoboda, 2015) determine the direction of the interpretation of the processes, which functional expressions are subordinated to and participate in. These tendencies are: 1. Analytic tendency (from holism to analytism); 2. The tendency to autonomize the language (the disconnection of language and reality); 3. The categorization (from lexical to categorial semantics expressed in a specific form); 4. The structurization (from apposition to syntactic structures); 5. The condensation of content (from a very pure content of syntactic units to the cumulation of content in syntactic units). The authors interpret selected linguistic processes in reference to these tendencies. The processes include inter alia: the coexistence of casual and prepositional forms, and the occurence of original particles as appositions of conjunctive function (which indicates analytical tendency); the introduction of elements expressing relation between events, and metatext elements (being, in the authors opinion, the symptom of autonomization); the process of transforming particles into connection indicators, leading to multifunctionality of conjunctions; the process of transforming object-related expressions into determinants of communicative intention (both processes are typical examples of formal categorization); the process of shaping of new categorial meanings of prepositional phrases, leading i.a. to the occurence of case government of verbs (being the effect of renewal of the categorial semantics): the process of shaping of correlated connection indicators and reported speech (seen these processes as the symptoms of structurization); the development of hypotaxis, being the symptom of the tendency to condensation of the content.
