Summary/Abstract: In Europe, unsustainable trends in climate change and energy use, natural resource management, biodiversity loss, land use, and transport continue to exist. Sustainable development is a key objective of the EU in the Treaty of Amsterdam, which entered into force in May 1999, and the first EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) was adopted by the Gothenburg European Council in 2001 and supplemented in 2002 by the European Council in Barcelona. TheCommission's review of the EU SDS in 2004 ends with the Commission's Communication on the review of the Sustainable Development Strategy - Platform for Action of December 2005. With the cooperation of the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Commission the Council, at its meeting on 15 and 16 June 2006, adopted a comprehensive renewed SDS for an enlarged EU.
