Summary/Abstract: The end of the Cold War has prompted an explosive growth in the number of democracies that makes us today live in a world where more than 120 democratic regimes demonstrate the option of most of the world's population for a democratic political leadership. It is recognized that the democratic electoral process is one of the basic characteristics of this type of regime and there are no political alternatives that make citizens more confident that their vote really matters for the political stability and sustainable development of their country. That is why democratic elections are extremely important for all citizens to be confident with their belief in the legitimacy of the electoral process. However, in recent years, there have been numerous suspicions about the fairness of electoral processes in several states of the world, suspicions due to both doubts about the commission of frauds and so-called external electoral influences. In this context, this article aims to analyse the importance of fair electoral processes for the future of contemporary democracies by introducing the concept of electoral integrity and assessing the answer to the question: is electoral integrity a necessity for the future of contemporary democracies
