Summary/Abstract: The paper traces the possible parallels between Walter Benjamin’s Book of Passages and Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk. The conclusions lead to identifying a search for the “Western gaze” as a narrative model for constructing the personal world of memory in the novel by the Turkish narrator.
