To develop regions in accordance with the principles of regional policy, the regional self-government was created. So it presents the youngest form of self-government in Slovakia. Its mission is to fulfill the functions of territorial self-government above the municipal importance, which has given responsibilities, funds, property and other tools. Required by law self-governing regions are responsible for general regional development, but as it is clear from the context of the Act, which underlined the results described in this paper, in practical level their existence reduces more to the performance of the lawful powers, as an initiator of socio-economic development in the regions.
