Summary/Abstract: The essence of the present article constitutes an analysis of the functioning of the image of the past and a way of talking about the suffering in selected novels of Małgorzata Musierowicz from the Jeżycjada series. These novels are characterised by the image of a family full of emotional warmth, which is the source of happiness and safety. On such a background, it is interesting to discuss the ways in which totally different elements are entwined into the plot, including the nuances of talking about sadness, suffering, and despair. The idyllic picture of the world presented in Jeżycjada is disturbed by difficult, often traumatic experiences, such as divorce, and even death. The topic of the article, and especially the key terms contained in it, has required to employ the analytic tools from the field of linguistics as well as psychology. Discovering the linguistic picture of suffering in the novels under discussion has involved the deciphering of the specific code concealed in deliberately formed linguistic structures.
