Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this article is to show how Gertrude Stein changed the understanding of autobiography as text which is seen as a story of one’s own written by one’s own. In Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and in Everybody’s Autobiography, Stein creates an autobiographical subject who turns out to be both fictional and documentary (perceived as a portrait of herself). Moreover, she explains that writing an autobiography is not about writing the truth, but about experimenting with language, literature, and the reader’s expectations. Her private narrations sometimes are almost impossible to explain, sometimes they are seen as a space of iterations used for making them more communicable, but, what is the most important, they are evidences that the impossible can happen in texts.
