- Summary/Abstract:This article discusses English-language female writers’ avant-garde at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the subject matter includes texts gathered in the collection Daughters of Decadence. Stories by Women Writers of the Finde-Siècle prepared in 1993 by Elaine Showalter, who takes into consideration short forms of prose, such as short stories, dream narratives, fantasies, utopias, dramas, allegories, and fragmented narratives. The body of the article consists of three parts. In the first part, I describe the “odd woman” and New Woman figures determined by Showalter and Sally Ledger. In the second one, I interpret chosen works of the female writers of that time (“An Egyptian Cigarette” by Kate Chopin, “Suggestion” by Ada Leverson, “The Buddhist Priest’s Wife” by Olive Schreiner, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “A Cross Line” by George Egerton, “Miss Grief” by Vernon Lee, “Life’s Gifts” by Olive Schreiner, and “A White Night” by Charlotte Mew). In the last part, I contemplate the writers’ avant-garde, which – I think – was associated with their identity rather than with poetics of their works.

- Keywords:Stanisława Przybyszewska; vernacular modernism; avant-garde;women’s prose;
- Summary/Abstract:This article reflects on the possibility of interpreting Stanisława Przybyszewska’s prose in the context of vernacular modernism (M. Bratu Hansen) and the avant-garde project of “film novel” (J. Brzękowski). Paying attention to Przybyszewska’s inspirations from both popular cinema (early Hollywood) and avant-garde one (German expressionism and Soviet revolutionary film) and to the strategy of “plagiarism” used by the writer, the author of this article emphasises the relation between high and low forms of culture, problematic for modernity. Przybyszewska’s unfinished prose pieces are understood as avantgarde laboratory of new modes of simultaneous vision. Finally, the author scrutinises the issue of gender in narrative quests of Stanisława Przybyszewska.

- Author(s):Anna Pekaniec

- Keywords:Autobiography; avant-garde;identity;
- Summary/Abstract:The main aim of this article is to show how Gertrude Stein changed the understanding of autobiography as text which is seen as a story of one’s own written by one’s own. In Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and in Everybody’s Autobiography, Stein creates an autobiographical subject who turns out to be both fictional and documentary (perceived as a portrait of herself). Moreover, she explains that writing an autobiography is not about writing the truth, but about experimenting with language, literature, and the reader’s expectations. Her private narrations sometimes are almost impossible to explain, sometimes they are seen as a space of iterations used for making them more communicable, but, what is the most important, they are evidences that the impossible can happen in texts.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt to describe the phenomenon of William S. Burroughs’ “gender theory.” In the first part of the article, Burroughs’ positions in the areas of literature, art, pop culture, and academia are presented. In the second part, I explain Burroughs’ understanding of categories of sex and gender. In the third part, a problem of gender in The Wild Boys by William S. Burroughs is expounded. In the fourth part, I describe Burroughs’ vision of “queer.” The fifth part contains a brief comparative analysis of gender theories of radical feminism and Burroughs’ attitude towards this issue. Finally, I emphasise the specific aspects of Burroughs’ vision of gender and sexuality.

- Summary/Abstract:In A Cyborg Manifesto Donna Haraway writes that “cyborgs populating feminist science fiction make very problematic the statuses of man or woman, human, artefact, member of a race, individual entity, or body.” I would like to return to the very beginning of thinking about this figure (even before the term was born) and take a close look at first cyborg images created by both Futurist (Giannina Censi) and Dada (Hannah Höch) female artists. I also examine Mina Harker from Bram Stoker’s Dracula as one of the first protocyborg figures in Western literature. I am interested in to what extent avant-garde female artists anticipated the new form of subjectivity and how their works problematised the human–nature and human–technology relation, and thinking in categories of gender.

- Keywords:Tadeusz Peiper; Andrzej K. Waśkiewicz; avant-garde;eroticism;
- Summary/Abstract:Andrzej K. Waśkiewicz, a renowned critic of the Polish poetic vanguard of the interwar period, was particularly concerned with the literary and theoretical works associated with Zwrotnica [The Switch], as well as the organisational activity of their authors. Among his various projects we might find, among others, the papers devoted to the avant-garde erotic poetry, which he understood as the “independent genre” and the element of “consciousness.” While reading the poetics theorised by the writers gathered around Tadeusz Peiper, he pointed to models demonstrating that “eroticism resisted rationalisation. Or, to put it differently, it was a seemingly rationalised part of the system capable of rationalising the system itself anytime.” The paper returns to Waśkiewicz’s works and his reading practice in order to pose the questions concerning his interpretative rigour and the most significant points on his map of thematic readings.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is devoted to the strategies of creations of masculinity in the novel Bravery (in Polish: Męstwo) written by Brunon Jasieński. What is analysed are the ways of presenting patriarchy in post-revolutionary social relations, gender relations, and strategies of creations gender identity and social consequences of the revolutionary project of emancipation, which was abandoned in the USSR in the early 1930s. An important assumption of the study is also an attempt to establish the relation of this short prose to dominant fiction preserved by the poetics of socialist realism and the ways in which it discusses “classic” texts dealing with the emancipation of women (Bebel, Engels, Kołłontaj). In my analysis I use categories developed by Raewyn Connell, Herbert Sussmann, and Kaja Silverman (hegemonic masculinity, manliness as performance, and dominant fiction respectively).

- Keywords:Gombrowicz; literary debut; literary reception; queer; homophobia; Freud;Sedgwick;
- Summary/Abstract:This article provides an analysis of the reception of Witold Gombrowicz’s literary debut in 1933: Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania [A Diary of Adolescence]. The author notices the discrepancy between the overall positive reception of the debut (as pointed out by Jerzy Jarzębski) and Gombrowicz’s negative memory of it. This article reads the eponymous “immaturity” in reference to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and her concept of periperformativity. “Immaturity” – widely commented by the critics – is often collated with such terms as “Freudism,” “sexualism,” and “disease.” As it turns out, “immaturity” is a performative utterance encoded in a Freudian manner which stigmatises homosexuality by means of turning it into a euphemism. Because of that, Gombrowicz attempts to adopt this term in order to detach it from its homophobic framework.

- Summary/Abstract:Although Wilhelm Mach’s novel Agnieszka, córka Kolumna (1964) was considered avant-garde, controversial, and provoking in the sixties, it remains today – as Mach’s whole output – forgotten. This article is an attempt at “close reading” of this problematic and partially incoherent novel by Mach: the writer’s ambition was to write a “gendered” avant-garde novel, where the “masculine” and “wide” epic dimension is balanced by the “feminine” dimension (focus on emotions and details, mindfulness, erotisation of the masculine body in a female’s gaze). I argue that Mach’s project failed, but I also highlight its unique and still underestimated position in the history of Polish literature.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper concerns the phenomenon of the “new” prose in Polish literature of the second half of the twentieth century, also known as “revolution in literary prose.” It consists of texts of writers making their debut in the seventies and early eighties. The author analyses how the state of exhaustion within the modernist discourse was related to defining gender roles. In conclusion, it is stated that all modification which led to questioning the avant-garde and modernist concepts in literature by the “new” prose also preserved the traditional role of masculinity and the privileged position of the male author in the late modern age during the seventies and eighties in Polish culture.

- Keywords:neo avant-garde; feminist criticism; phenomenology of the literary work of art; late avant-garde poetical manifestos;literary criticism;
- Summary/Abstract:This article considers the critical reception of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry and the way it was performed until the beginning of the nineties. The literary criticism in Poland was largely determined by the discourse of the academic literary studies. Furthermore, Tymoteusz Karpowicz – the most prominent voice in the poetical and critical dialogue with Miłobędzka and the neo avant-garde poet himself – carried out the interpretation based on his philosophical reading of Heideggerian phenomenology. Certain patterns of understanding Miłobędzka’s work, created at large by Karpowicz’s Metafora otwarta [An Open Metaphor], seem to be neglecting theses posited by Miłobędzka herself, an author of many meta-poetical statements that could be read in terms of the late avant-garde manifestos of her own.

- Keywords:Krystyna Miłobędzka; gender stereotypes; academic discourse;subjectivity;
- Summary/Abstract:The paper has two aims. The first one is a close reading of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s experimental volume of poetry, Dwanaście wierszy w kolorze [Twelve Poems in Colour]. This reading shows the complex nature of gendered subjectivity in Miłobędzka’s poetry and the way it is expressed through minimal language units (e.g. pronouns and prepositions) as well as avant-garde techniques (typography, usage of different font colours). The second aim is to reveal how academic writing on gender can fall into the trap of what Hélène Cixous calls a “phallic mystification.”

- Summary/Abstract:The article challenges the common view within the history of Polish literature that schematically places women’s poetry outside of modernism and avant-garde. The author employs the concept of neo avant-garde to characterise the poetic projects by women omitted so far, dismissed to date as marginal or “quasi-avant-garde.” In the article, she demonstrates ways in which Julia Fiedorczuk’s intellectual, self-reflexive, and experimental poetry draws upon and refashions the avant-garde tradition.

- Keywords:Georgia O’Keeffe; American modernism; gender stereotype; gendered reading
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the history of controversial interpretations of Georgia O’Keeffe’s oeuvre through the lens of the categories of sex and body. It highlights the striking similarity between early readings of her work by – mostly male – artists and critics active in the first few decades of the twentieth century and those of 1970s feminists re-interpreting her paintings according to newly defined, “gendered” standards. The author describes how O’Keeffe defied the persistent sexist stereotypes throughout her long career, both in her written statements and in her visual works, demonstrating intellectual competence and insightfulness, which her male colleagues did not expect of her (and often denied). Especially, many of her flower paintings were envisaged by her as an ironic rebuke to skewed analyses of their alleged sexual connotations. Only in recent years attempts have been made by a new generation of critics to reconsider O’Keeffe’s themes and strategies as responses to the challenges posed by the historical moment.

- No. of Pages:27
- Keywords:Ewa Partum; conceptual art.; feminism; self-organisation; alternative art galleries
- Summary/Abstract:Ewa Partum’s conceptual art of the early 1970s consisted in creating a new artistic language, but at the same time it bore some traits of feminism and was marked by the figure of what might be called “a woman’s touch.” The artist’s self-organisational activities – which took the form of establishing and running an alternative art gallery called “Adres” – can be also considered to be self-emancipatory feminist practice. The gallery was instrumental in Partum’s attempts at producing symbolic capital for herself and taking a position in the field of Polish and international neo avant-garde. In the article, I use this perspective to interpret Partum’s selected artworks, performances, and organisational practices as well as to look at an ongoing process of historisation and institutionalisation of her art.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the question of political implications of French feminist theories, also known as feminist avant-garde. Referring to the strategic re-reading of the concept of French Feminism by Christine Delphy, I argue that such projects as écriture féminine have been appropriated by postmodern Anglo-American critique, which tends to fetishise the strategies of displacement and aestheticisation of the political field. The aim of the article is to examine whether contemporary feminist theories can take up the challenge of French feminist avant-garde by going back to its political roots.
