Summary/Abstract: The article analyses three poems of a well known Mauritian poet, Umar Timol, from the perspective of translation studies. The author depicts the difficulties, faced in process of translating, which result from poet’s multilingualism as well as from cultural and historical conditions. The major problem is the choice of translation strategy in case of loanwords adopted from English, Creole or Hindi languages which coexist with French in Mauritius. Seeking translation dominant in the poetry proves to be equally important. The particular attention is given to the prosody and melody of the text. Finally, the author ponders on the translator’s attitude towards the Polish reader, especially on his role in deciphering the intertextual references.
