Summary/Abstract: In many of his novels of the eighth decade of the 19th century, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski has built effect of mystery of life – through the use of the techniques of popular literature. He has used and at the same time improved these very techniques. In this way he created a metaphor for the present times, in which the individual events and biographies do not keep up with the rules that organise common knowledge of the world.
