Summary/Abstract: This article reviews the EU Energy Union establishment in light of the strategic decisions being taken on union level. The author reviews the structural changes that are expected to occur as a result of the energy transition process through clear, transparent and practically oriented measures. The research highlights some requirements for energy diversification and targets for energy security of the EU member states. It mentions seven pillars for transition to decarbonization of the energy system: improvement of the energy efficiency; ever growing role of the renewable energy sources in the EU energy mix; substitution of the coal and oil with natural gas; technological development; internal market optimization; price flexibility on the energy market and supporting investment interests; adequate infrastructure for inter-connectivity and long-distance transit. Author reviews some issues noticed on a national level during the strategic planning, policy preparation and implementation.
