Summary/Abstract: The banking assets in the European Union are subject to research, which traces the development of the aggregate balance sheet indicators since the deployment of the global financial crisis in Europe. The different trends in the banking systems are driven by the banking and debt problems incurred in certain countries, but are also related to the financial recovery measures that have been taken. These factors give reason to examine the processes, both individually and depending on whether they are in countries of the euro area or not, whether the banking systems belong to the developed or the developing economies. The state of the banking assets – in quantitative and qualitative terms – is essential for achieving a Banking Union, the creation of which aims at achieving more sustainable and integrated financial sector.
