Summary/Abstract: Since 2009 the Economic and Monetary Union is in an unprecedented crisis. Several countries, amongst which Cyprus, suffered severe debt problems and were forced to look for official financial assistance. But the crisis can not be defined simply as a debt or economic crisis. This is a crisis of the design of the Economic and Monetary Union which disclosed the significant defects and omissions in the union’s infrastructure in the first decade of its existence. This article aims to look at the crisis developments in Cyprus as a reflection of the significant problems of the Economic and Monetary Union in Europe.
