Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the importance of a theoretical training for college students in Translation from the very moment they start to translate, bridging thus the gap between the two terms that common sense tends to set apart – theory and praxis. Aided by Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of symbolic goods and by means of a questionnaire, the author analyzes the representations of translation of a group of young students beginning their grade at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, where „Fundamentals of Translation” is an obligatory subject placed at the onset of their freshman year. The author argues that the theoretical reflection about their translating praxis encourages them to reconsider their own representation of the profession, which remains, in fact, very similar to that of the common sense.
