Summary/Abstract: This volume represents the proceedings of the international conference Teaching and learning how to "translate in a reasoned way", organized at the West University of Timisoara on May 22nd and 23rd, 2014 and at also the third of the publications of this kind supported by ISTTRAROM-Translationes Research Centre. The twelve papers included in this volume examine, to varying extents, the state of the art of translation teaching and learning. The authors (translation specialists, didacticians, teachers) contribute to an overview of experimental, theoretical and applied research. Taking into account the translation teaching-learning within the globalization context, they explain new perspectives and the potentialities represented by a reasoned use of the latest technological developments. The authors question the multicontextual nature of translation teaching-learning strategies, tools and methodologies.

- Summary/Abstract:This article deals with the importance of a theoretical training for college students in Translation from the very moment they start to translate, bridging thus the gap between the two terms that common sense tends to set apart – theory and praxis. Aided by Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of symbolic goods and by means of a questionnaire, the author analyzes the representations of translation of a group of young students beginning their grade at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, where „Fundamentals of Translation” is an obligatory subject placed at the onset of their freshman year. The author argues that the theoretical reflection about their translating praxis encourages them to reconsider their own representation of the profession, which remains, in fact, very similar to that of the common sense.

- Summary/Abstract:Based on several translation-oriented disciplines and fields using translation, some of which constantly use new technologies, the teaching of translation in Applied Modern Languages departments involves multilingual computer processing, a field that largely overlaps with that of the language industries. The multidisciplinary training for the translation professions (also considered professions of linguistic and cultural mediation) requires a perfect synergy between the disciplines of intercultural communication and appropriate interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches. Business simulation is one of these methods. It is perfectly suited because, on the one hand, it can be adapted to be used to train specialists in many trades the focal point of which is translating and, on the other hand, it can help a future professional to get used in advance with his/her working environment and learn to live his job. This is what the author tries to illustrate through translation teaching approaches involving the simulation of translation projects in the field of the language industries.

- Summary/Abstract:The problem of evaluation of the translation engrosses the minds of many researchers, however, the general criteria for the evaluation of the translation, in our case, the translation of specialized discourse, is not developed until now. Many researchers attempt to develop the criteria for evaluation, which will help to assess the translations and, consequently, the activity of a translator. The analysis of studies where this issue is discussed has allowed the author to identify three different approaches: evaluation of translation by translatologists, evaluation of translation that was made at enterprise and evaluation criteria while teaching translation. In this study, the author is interested in the evaluation of translation while teaching. However, this assessment is based on the translatologists’ and translation employer’s requirements.

- Summary/Abstract:Equally confronted with students’ lack of general knowledge and with a continuously reduced interest in the translator’s job, the author tries to find solutions to this insufficiency and organize her lectures in order to meet the increasing requirements of this profession as well as to answer the university students' needs focused on the practical side of translation rather than the theoretical one. Therefore the correlation between the general and specific competences of translators are reconsidered, at the bachelor and master level, by granting a more important place in students’ training to the cultural competence, crucial in achieving a good translation. Besides increasing the number of hours of practical courses of foreign language and civilization, the introduction of internships for the young translators would be beneficial, would ensure their progress and would help them reach a satisfactory level of performance faster.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from her own experience of teacher of translation, the author shows the role that contrastive linguistics can – and should – have in teaching reasoned translation to apprentice translators. As an illustration, the author presents several fragments of a translation-oriented grammar (French-Romanian and Romanian-French) focused on several specific linguistic structures which are the object of a (translational) systematic contrastive analysis. The author then emphasizes the process of explicitation (addition, amplification), illustrated by the use of some categories of explicitational terms.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article aims at drawing the contours of a specific didactics for the almost closed market of judicial expertise in the fields of translation and interpreting in France. The first part recalls the expectations regarding the sworn court interpreter-translator urged by legal and statutory texts on judicial expertise and the practice of habilitating, nominating and controlling of experts by the judiciary. The second part studies the initial training profiles of experts who are currently enrolled on the national list of judicial experts drawn up by the Cour de cassation or on one of the regional lists of experts drawn up by one of the Cours d’appel. The third part lends itself to a didactic reflection suggesting teaching activities specifically designed to the mediation between language and law that make use of the conceptual tools of translation critique.

- Summary/Abstract:This study analyzes the changes undergone by the “grammar-translationˮ type French-Italian bilingual textbooks, used especially in the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages in Europe in the eighteenth century, following the institutionalization of MFL teaching in the nineteenth century. The treatment of common conversation idiomatic expressions is here examined in four avatars of Giovanni Veneroni’s 1678 textbook (published in 1737, 1786, 1821 and 1864). It shows that it is not the grammar-translation method of these textbooks that should have been challenged in the late nineteenth century, but a shift in the conception of language from living orality to old-fashioned writing. The identification of historical, social, linguistic and political causes that motivated this educational involution allows us today to re-assess the key role of translation in the teaching of MFL and at last gives these old bilingual textbooks the place they deserve, especially in the eighteenth century, in the history of Franco-Italian translation.

- Summary/Abstract:Over the last few years, new information and communication technologies have been a breeding ground for development and exploitation. Such a progress couldn’t be indifferent to Translation Studies, which are the ultimate field of linguistic and cultural contact. Within the framework of a joint experimental project, the authors carried out a distant, simultaneous, translation teaching course through videoconferencing between two teachers and two classes located at different places: Corfu and Montpellier. The results of this co-teaching project met their expectations and proved the pedagogical benefits of audiovisual technologies, as an innovative teaching method, but also showed its restrictions and constraints.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from the authors’ experience as teachers of translation – in the broadest sense of the term – in the well-defined context of an Applied Modern Languages Department, they set to highlight the advantage of using similar and consistent methods in order to make students understand the common as well as the specific mechanisms of the different types of translation: translation from L1 into L2 and from L2 into L1, sight translation, specialized translation, consecutive interpretation. It has been their contention that students should be able to grasp the complementarity between the different disciplines involving translation. Moreover, teachers should make them aware of the need to acquire various skills – among which that making an objective self-assessment – in order to meet the demands of the job market. The authors’ work focuses on the benefits of self-assessment at each stage of the training of translators and on how they approach it in class depending on the type of translation taught. A questionnaire sent to students complements their perspective.

- Summary/Abstract:Translating wine and its culture is certainly an exciting subject, through its complexity and the problems that it raises. The present study gathers and outlines several topics related to a lexical journey that is not only specialized, but also multidisciplinary, cultural and sometimes artistic – in a very generous sense. The author first focuses on the possibilities of rendering into another language the belonging, the qualification and the spatial identity of vineyard and of wine. She then adds considerations and examples concerning the jobs and objects related to the wine, and, last but not least, the descriptive discourse, which gives value to the previous aspects. This study is the result of a research the author set out four years ago as part of a translation practical course (2nd year students specializing in translation), but also the continuation of a research carried out within the UNESCO Chair 'Culture et Traditions du Vin’ at the Burgundy University.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper can be considered an inter, trans- and multi- disciplinary study. The author combines several disciplines (the pedagogy, criticism and history of translation) which, while retaining their specificity, are involved in the acquisition of transversal skills that are common to the practice and history of translation, to translation theories and terminology. The author's intention is to demonstrate that the translation competence, built on an undeniable editorial skill, can increase simultaneously with the documentary and terminological competence and that translation teaching and learning goes hand in hand with the teaching of the translation history and translation studies.
