Summary/Abstract: The latest EU enlargement waves are to the East, its energy interests and the growing attention on some security matters are leading to increasingly active policy towards the countries of the South Caucasus. The European Parliament first called for several initiatives established later on by the EU, including the appointment in 2003 of an EU Special Representative for the region and the inclusion of the three countries - Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, in the European Neighbourhood Policy in 2004, and in particular in a newer initiative named the Eastern Partnership in 2009.
