Summary/Abstract: Central Asia is an important direction in Chinese foreign policy, crucial for the implementation of the land portion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The challenges for China are the growing anti-Chinese sentiment in Central Asia and the risk of destabilisation in the region caused by the economic crisis and the weakness of local states. In the long term, this will force China to become more involved in regional security, which will exacerbate the Sino-Russian rivalry in Central Asia.
