Summary/Abstract: On 10 November, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) led by Pedro Sánchez won early elections and on 12 November established a coalition with the left-wing Unidas Podemos (UP) led by Pablo Iglesias. However, it was impossible to form a government without an agreement with the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), which expects in return the start of an institutionalised dialogue between the central and Catalan governments. There is also a need for neutrality from smaller parties. Sanchez’s chances to remain in power are high, but the lack of a stable parliamentary base will weaken him in internal and European politics.
