- Keywords: Václav Philomathes; early modern literature; dactylic hexameter; spondee; musical treatise
- Summary/Abstract: This paper concerns a Latin treatise on the theory of music entitled Musicorum libri quattuor [Four Books about Music], written in the form of didactic poem by a Czech humanist, Václav Philomathes, and printed in Vienna in 1512. The treatise, although written solely in dactylic hexameter, shows a certain degree of variety within the metre that can be thoroughly examined. The paper offers a collection and analysis of such data, which includes: distribution of spondees in each line of the poem, frequency of occurrence of particular metric patterns within the treatise, deviations from the norms of verse composition, and occurrences of rare metric patterns. The analysis reveals a noticeable variety in the metre of the piece in question — and one that seems to be deliberate. Furthermore, it can be observed that the author preferred patterns with a spondee in the second foot over the other and avoided using more than two metrically identical verses in a row. Whilst the treatise does not employ many poetic devices and contains a limited technical vocabulary, the variety within the poem’s metre is significant.

- Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Zofia Węgierska’s columns on opera plays, published in 1853–1869 in Biblioteka Warszawska. The columnist sees the field as a synthesis of the arts — theater, painting, sculpture, music and literature. Her opera criticism therefore uses terminology and modes of expression appropriate for describing other arts. In this regard, the journalist is particularly inspired by the journalistic output of Théophile Gautier and the Gesamtkunstwerk theory of Richard Wagner. In her writings one can also find reflections of Madame de Staël’s Romantic comparatist theory and the classicist “return to the sources” (ad fontes).

- Keywords: French music; Marcel Proust; César Franck; violin sonatas; Paris; turn of the 19th and 20th centuries
- Summary/Abstract: Marcel Proust, a connoisseur of music and a sensitive listener, an admirer of Fauré, Franck, and Wagner, created a world of sounds in his works — sounds that can be felt, heard and savored. The musical components blend perfectly with other elements, sometimes creating a background, at other times coming to the forefront. The famous “la petite phrase de la sonate de Vinteuil” becomes a symbol of Swann’s love and one of the leading motifs of the entire novel. It carries a wealth of meanings, intensifies the protagonist’s emotions and evokes the atmosphere of Parisian musical life. At the same time it raises a question: What sonatas were being played in Paris during Proust’s time? What could the writer have heard in the concert hall and in his own salon? What sounds stimulated his imagination and contributed to the image of the ideal “Vinteuil’s sonata?” The article invites readers on a journey following the footsteps of French composers from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose music inspired Marcel Proust. Readers are encouraged to listen to the violin sonatas indicated in the text. The music of César Franck and his students is characterized by emotionalism, changes in moods, transformation of musical material and the recurrence of earlier themes. It provides a valuable context for reading Proust, inviting immersion in the sound world that surrounded him.

- Keywords: pause; silence; song; music; sound studies; popular music; popular song
- Summary/Abstract: The basic form-forming unit of a song is a rhythmically ordered series of melonic sounds, i.e. sounds that are in a mechanized movement. This movement correlates with the rhythmic structure of the text, thus creating a harmonized conglomerate of interacting elements of the composition. The movement of melody and lyrics is subordinated to a structure that at first glance cannot be seen — a pause and functionalized silence, and thus “empty spaces” of the song. Paradoxically, they are the most constitutive for the genre. They interact on many levels and layers of composition, ranging from elementary quantitative classification, i.e. instrumental, vocal and performative levels, to individual poetological and expressive qualities — ordering the movement of sounds, regulating tensions or a kind of “shading” thanks to the skillful combination of contrasts. “Empty spaces” participate in the game of form elements on par with sounds and murmurs.

- Keywords: song; song studies; Grechuta; Chopin; sung poetry
- Summary/Abstract: In this article the author examines the influence of Fryderyk Chopin’s work and style on the early work of Marek Grechuta based on his 1970 concept album Marek Grechuta & Anawa. The author claims that Grechuta’s early work can be classified as lyrical. She outlines common features, such as: poetic musical language, references to Romantic traditions, motifs from Polish folk music and references to jazz music. She then points to and discusses specific songs from the album in which Chopin’s influence resounds: Wesele [The wedding], W dzikie wino zaplątani [Tangled in Ivy], Zadymka [Blizzard], Będziesz moją panią [You Shall Be My Lady]. Following Wojciech Majewski, she defines the representative Grechutian waltz variety inspired by the singer’s work. In reference to Grechuta’s perception as a “tender poet,” she discusses the lyrics from the first album, which were published in two volumes of poetry — pointing out the differences between them. The author uses literary and musicological analysis in her work, focusing on music studies and song studies.

- Keywords: Edward Pasewicz; Daniel Odija; Wit Szostak; Ignacy Karpowicz; Szczepan Twardoch; Paweł Huelle; Maciej Płaza
- Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the common themes and devices in the collection of novels by Polish writers born in the 1970s, considering the novel Pulverkopf by Edward Pasewicz as the culmination of the gradually emerging trend. The compared elements include intersemiotic references to various arts (especially music), often in the convention of a novel about an artist, the multiplicity of time plans in the plot, connecting the present with the tragic history of the 20th century, and the multiethnicity and multilingual nature of the presented world. The complexity of the texture of the examined texts makes it possible to compare them to a neo-Romantic symphony, as Pasewicz explicitly does with his work.

- Summary/Abstract: In recent years, the Polish publishing market has seen an increase in interest in publications intended for young art connoisseurs, including young music lovers. An interesting proposal that presents the biographies of contemporary musicians in a fictionalized way is the series Gama i pasażerowie [Scale and Passengers]. Among the series of twelve illustrated texts, there was one written by J. Mikołajewski entitled Krajobraz z burzą. Bajka o Pawle Mykietynie [Landscape with a Storm: A Fairy Tale about Paweł Mykietyn]. In the text, the protagonist — Pawełek — sets off on a journey that is interrupted by a storm. Finally, he writes down his impressions in a composition titled Epifora. The specific narrative, quasi-refrains or their variants, and numerous intertextual and intersemiotic references suggest that the work should also be interpreted in the context of music. The author analyzes the soundscape presented of the text and considers references to the contemporary style in Polish music — surconventionalism, which is characterized by, among others, a postmodern game with the listener and the processing of quotations, conventions and allusions.

- Summary/Abstract: This paper offers a presentation of three hitherto unknown letters, written in the 1844–1845 period by Jan Czeczot (1796–1847): Philomath, poet, researcher of folklore and former exile, addressed to his distant relative Adolf Kobyliński (1816–1894): patriotic landowner and collector of historical souvenirs living in Cieszewla (Nowogród county, Minsk province). The shortage of epistolographic sources and comprehensive research on this particular episode of Czeczot’s biography necessitated this edition of the let-ters to be preceded by two sizable introductory chapters. Part one, published in the previous volume of Prace Literackie, establishes the rules and scope of a future archive research that would supplement the collection of Czeczot’s letters written after his return from exile to his native Nowogród region, which is currently scarce. Part two collects and summarizes data about Czeczot’s correspondents from his home province that were published in print at an earlier date.Taking into account the shortage of printed sources and existing literary-historical research, this part of the article can be used for contextual reference for future considerations on the figures discussed within and the literary, historical and cultural geography of the period. At a time when the epistolographic base will be sufficiently broadened, the presented article could be of some use for further research on Jan Czeczot’s life and literary work and help shed light on the regrettably obscure world of the Nowogród noble circle and the prominent figures that populated it.

- Keywords: Julian Stryjkowski; communism; Communist Party of Western Ukraine; Communist Party of Poland; communist habitus; antisemitism
- Summary/Abstract: Previous publications on Stryjkowski’s communist involvement and his reckoning with communism have mostly been based on the extended interview Ocalony na Wschodzie [Saved in the East] (1991). They largely repeated the writer’s own statements and assessments formulated in his later years. The present considerations, delivered in somewhat broad brushstrokes, are an attempt to introduce previously unknown information, a return to the sources. Chief among them are Stryjkowski’s unprinted diary entries from the 1950s, but also to his newspaper articles and letters from this period and references to him scattered in the publications of other members of the literati (specifically in their memoirs and diaries). The aim of the inquiry is to establish the writer’s mode of functioning within the communist party. To begin with, the most important motives for Stryjkowski’s accession to the Stalinist party were collected. This is followed by a brief characterisation of the various stages of his communist itinerary. The use of archival research on Agroid (a satellite of the Communist Party of Poland) and the latest sociological findings on the modes of communist biography made it possible to formulate a conclusion about the type of Stryjkowski’s inter-war habitus as a communist. He has been characterised as a “loose party member.” And his inter-war mode of functioning in the party described as a nexus of “reorientation” and “radicalisation” (moving from Zionism to communism). The conclusion points to an oppositional dimension in the writer’s life (and work). As presented, Stryjkowski’s break with communism appears not only as an effect of Gomułka’s thaw, but also as a result of his earlier diagnosis of the decay of the idea itself, as well as his disagreement with the anti-Semitic tendencies in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc parties in general.

- Keywords: metalepsis; audiovisual syndrome; performance; video games; immersion
- Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the relationship between literature and audiovisual media. I examine how the author of Czarne słońce [Black Sun] uses elements of poetics taken from action movies and video games to increase the effect of literary immersion (the reader’s involvement in the presented world). The concept of this book is based on the performative influence on the reader, who experiences text in an almost physical way. The author also uses the figure of metalepsis, which enabled him to achieve the effect of breaking the framework of literature — infiltrating the textual world from outside and vice versa. The main point of this paper was to show the plasticity of literature and its ability to use the semiotic system of other media systems (films, video games). The use of imaging methods typical for audiovisual arts in this case allowed to adapt to the ways of influencing readers entangled in the culture of images and sounds.
