The sources and material for the study of the history of Catholic monasteries in Podolia, Volhynia and the Kiev region, dissolved throughout the 19th century by the Russian government, are greatly dispersed. Documents of interest to the project can be found in several state archives in Ukraine. The biggest collections are kept in the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kiev (Центральний державний історичний архів України, м. Київ) and the State District Archives in Kiev (Державний архів Київської області) and Zhytomyr (Державний архів Житомирської області). In the article the author presents the results of a survey of these archive holdings, pointing to the most interesting documents. He has managed to make a detailed inventory of several archive units – associated with dissolutions of monasteries (including the 1832 dissolution) of greatest importance to the project, to analyse a dozen or so files documenting the dissolutions of the various monasteries (of the Franciscan Observants (Bernardines) in Dubno, the Franciscans in Mezhyrich, the Discalced Carmelites in Berdychiv and Kamyanets-Podilsky, or the Capuchins in Brusyliv, Khodorkiv, Starokostiantyniv and Vinnytsia), as well as to collect a lot of material dealing with the fate of friars from the dissolved monasteries and to indicate fonds in which interesting documents might be found.

Due to the constant destruction of documents in the Romanian space, the National Archives of Romania should initiate and conduct a series of educational activities with pupils and students in order to protect the archival heritage belonging to all ethnic and religious communities. Thus, by starting a program entitled The Educational Archives, children would understand the old documents, learn to appreciate and to use them and to become aware that the documents are the ones which preserve the memory and the rights of individuals and of the local communities. With the help of education, people would understand that the destruction of documents due to indifference means the loss of citizens’ rights, of individual or collective memory and even the loss of some business opportunities. Consequent to this program, Romania would join the European cultural trend, since the pupils and students would understand the scientific and practical importance of archives and that a document is more valuable if it can be used by all citizens in order to gain their rights.

The evolution of the events at the end of the Second World War leaded to the retreat of the Romanian administration from Bessarabia and Bukovina. Among the retreated institutions were the State Archives in Chişinău and Chernovtsy relocated in Bibeşti, Gorj County, respectively, Micăsasa, Târnava Mică. The end of the World War forced Romania to enforce the stipulations of the Truce Convention signed in Moscow on September 12, 1945. Hence, the documents of the two evicted regional branches of the State Archives were handed over to the Soviet authorities in order to be transported to USSR. The documents preserved by the National Archives of Romania reflect this process and contain inventories of the restored archival patrimony.

This article attempts to illustrate the specificities of the Police X Archives. It has also been pointed out how strong the presence of the institution of the time limitation of punishability is in work of such a team. The period from 1950 to 1957 can be considered one of the most complex in the history of Romanian communism, and why not, one of the most debated issues in contemporary history. This comprehensive character is given, in particular, by the transformations made to the state and by the involvement of the Soviets in the political and social life of the country. In all the plans of the organization of the state, it underwent radical transformations that would shape its destiny in the future. New archival legis-lation of Soviet origin brought important changes in the organization of the Iasi Regional Service of the State Archives. Archival work doubled if not tripled, both by taking over economic, social, private documents and the control that the institution had to make to the creators and holders of documents. However, it also had a beneficial role in saving enough documents from destruction. There were enough cases of funds deposited at the creator that were in not-so-good conditions, mostly in basements, without evidence tools. The archivists of the city have had some very important achievements in this regard. Many funds of the former institutions disbanded with the establishment of the new regime were saved, as well as the documents of creators from the cultural environ-ment, which were normally not interesting for the new power. On the other hand, the judicial and military archives, in the light of their importance in the state's strategy, received increased attention from the communist power. So were the case with the bank archives and civil status documents, especially since many were found belonging to the institutions of Soviet Bessarabia. Most of the time the documents that aroused interest were those of the former institutions of leadership of the old regime such as the Prefec-tures, the Town Halls, the Popular Advice or the Tribunal. Most likely from a seemingly simple consideration, restricting access to information about the outdated system.

This article aims to offer a perspective of National Archives of Romania evolution in the past two decades. The essay analyzes the history of archival common law in this period, around the role of National Archive as a memory office but also more as a public administration institution. The study questions the theory that was imposed by the archives act no. 16/1996, that the National Archive is the only Romanian agency that deals with the public archives. Also, is offered a perspective on the accessibility to the historical records of the organizations. The author believe that we need to reshape this theory, in order to integrate the mutations in our modern society. For more than 30 years, National Archives repositorys could not receive the records that are part of national archivist fonds. There are more causes of this reality. That involves also the difficult for the public to research those documents. Adverse legislation to the archives act create a important issue for the free access to the records of the public organizations. The debate on the legal background of the public archives should not be ignorant of European model, of Romanian competitive legislation on other species of records and, also, of institutions that produces informations that are part of national archivist fonds without any roles or professional control.

This publication features the lecture which opened the now ongoing seminar “Art Studies, Archives and the Internet. History and Perspectives”, set up within the framework of a project entitled “Cultural Heritage in the Archives of the Institute of Art Studies (IAS): An Interactive Map of the Arts in Bulgaria.” The exposition has two parts, the first of which presents the general structure of the IAS archives, which was established in 2016. It is based on the specificities of the different arts included, but also on the different art disciplines (and respectively previous fundraising institutions) that generated these archives, namely “Music”, “Fine Arts”, “Architecture”, “Theater” and “Screen Arts.” The goals and tasks of the project are concerned with 1) the digitalization of various types of analogue media (paper, photo, audio and video materials storing multiple kinds of information in each of the archival sections), and 2) the creation of an Internet accessible database which could present in a sophisticated way the complexity of the scientific archives (as they took shape in the process of scientific work done by researchers at the institutions preceding the IAS). This is why the team consists of scholars from a variety of fields (musicology, ethnomusicology, art history, theatre studies and film studies), as well as archival and IT specialists. The second part of the text outlines (as an instance of potential difficulties for the researchers on the team) some scientific problems related to entering information from the IAS Folk Music Archive into previous databases (Web-Folk.bg from the mid-90s and the internal database from 2007 to 2015). Two main issues have been addressed: 1) the musical folklore regions representation, which (in the future database) would rather conform to the music-related dialect map of Elena Stoin’s study, named “Folk Music Dialects of Bulgaria” (1981); 2) problems of sample systematization with reference to their cultural function. Here it has been suggested that the achievements of ethnomusicologists working at the IAS over the 1990s should be followed. Their views and their possible application in the new database will be presented in a future publication.

The article comments on the state and problems of the Fine Arts Archive among the collections of the Institute of Art Studies (IAS). The archival items there can be divided into three main groups, the most significant being thosecreated within the framework of projects (including international ones) led by former and current researchers of the Institute. The formation and replenishment of this archival array is in direct relation to the approaches of the respective scientific discipline, its thematic fields and the interest of scholars in one or another manifestation of art during different periods of their careers. Under the project named “Cultural Heritage in the Archives of the IAS: an Interactive Map of the Arts in Bulgaria” there has been developed and put forward an archival description system that 1) takes into account the specifics of the respective science and inherent methods of documentation, 2) covers the maximum number of information carriers and 3) meets the needs of both Institute researchers and outside users.

The article presents the preserved dean’s archives concerning the Walcz (Wałcz) deanery. In the 14th century, the bishop of Poznan (Poznań) created the Kalisz-Walcz (Wałcz) official office for the territories behind the Notec (Noteć). As a result of the Reformation, in the mid-16th century the official office ceased to exist. In 1602, the areas remaining under Catholic Church administration were incorporated into the newly created Czarnkow (Czarnków)-Walcz (Wałcz) deanery. After the First Partition, the official office for West Prussia was reactivated in the area of Walcz (Wałcz). At the end of the 18th century, the autonomous deanery of Walcz (Wałcz) was established, which coincided with the territory of the poviat, except for Czaplinek, of the Pomeranian province. Initially, it consisted of 12 parishes and 34 branch churches. In the 20th century, several branches became independent pastoral centres. The preserved archives (159 notebooks) were divided into two parts: Generalia, concerning the issues of the entire deanery, divided into further series, and Specialties concerning individual parishes. The preserved files date from the end of the 18th century until 1945
