The article focuses on multiple citizenship from the theoretical perspective in an attempt to seize the conceptual implications of this expanding phenomenon in relation to the nation and to democracy. We argue that the proliferation of multiple citizenship is likely to wear out democracy and the sovereign state, as multiple citizenship goes against the very logic of citizenship. There are however symptoms in Europe of this very problematic conceptual dimension of multiple citizenship which illustrate the social dissolution and the security dilemma brought up by this phenomenon, despite being regarded as the ultimate embodiment of democratic citizenship. Thus the study combines the conceptual analysis of multiple citizenship with the empirical evidence brought in support of the argument that multiple citizenship has a perverse effect on democracy, representing the dissolution of the bond between state and individual. We argue that the gradual expansion and acceptance of multiple citizenship in international law and in national law should be at least regarded with suspicion from the standpoint of political theory because of its undermining effect of western democracies which evolved as bounded political communities based on bounded citizenries in order to further democracy. In support of the argument the article mobilizes the literature on postnationalism, boundary ethics, liberal nationalism and democratic theory and attempts to bridge the legal dimension of citizenship (that is emphasized in the studies of multiple citizenship) and with the political dimension.

When in 1976 the new Serbian translation of Petronius’ Satyricon by Radmila Šalabalić (1927-2011) came to light, it marked a turning point in the practices of our translators of classical authors. By taking an entirely new stylistic direction, basically oriented to the works and authors of the satirical and realistic genres of classical literature, Prof. Šalabalić made a decisive impact on the younger generation of translators. The distinctive feature of this new poetics is primarily associated with the entirely original and innovative use of the Serbian language and its different literary and colloquial variants and local idioms as the most powerful stylistic device for conveying parodistic and humorous potential of the original text. Regarding the narrative of the Latin prototype as historically conditioned, deeply idiosyncratic and thus ‘alienated’ from the contemporary reader, i.e. incomprehensible in many ways (different civilization, different habits, different national and historical mentalities etc.), Radmila Šalabalić succeeds in applying the Serbian linguistic element of the translation as an effective means of text ‘de-alienation’, thus bringing the reader closer to the realistic, satirical and parodistic aspects of the meaning inherent in the original.

This article offers both a genealogy of academic interest in resistance and dissent in the region, as well as an overview of current directions in research. Four kinds of sources are canvassed to paint as fulsome a picture as a short article permits. First, the original literature on dissent prior to the conclusion of the Cold War is reviewed, beginning with the seminal challenge to the “totalitarian” school presented by Gordon Skilling’s seminal article in World Politics. Second, key texts written in the two decades since the fall of communism on the impact of resistance and dissent are examined. Trajectories of initial research in the post-communist era are outlined, along with an assessment of how more recent texts of the “twenty years since the Fall” variety account for resistance and dissent. Finally, results of a short survey conducted by the author and sent to both established and emerging scholars in Europe and North America who are interested, have written on, and/or published on forms of resistance and dissent add a critical contemporary dimension to the analysis.

Katičić's Syntax is based on a representative corpus selected from the Croatian literary text, the humanities and journalism. lt widens the usual basis of description by including, along with the corpus of Karadžić's school, specimens from the Croatian literature based on the neo-štokavian dialect between the 1sth century and now. Thus it produces a broader range of linguistic phenomena, which need a broader and more precise linguistic model of interpretation than has been produced so far. On the other hand however, it does not review the syntactic facts from all variant idioms of standard Croatian. This is because a necessary preliminary work like this one has no precedent, and any such attempt is necessarily provisory, being more selective and prescriptive than interpretative and descriptive. The corpus is interpreted by a very coherent deductive system of grammatical rules. It is not formalized symbolically and does not reject traditional grammatical notions, but it succeeds surprisingly in building up a system of phrase structure rules (with precise sub categorization of nominal and verbal forms in their syntactic roles), of transformations of phrases into complex sentences with clause structures, and of transformations into complex sentences with non-clause structures, which result from the processes of attribution, nominalization, infinitivization, etc. The whole system is viewed under three aspects of grammatical semantic and informative sentence structures. Their interplay aptly explains many syntactic phenomena. Thus, it permits an elegant explanation of fundamental rules of word order, or allows very precise and complex semantic interpretations of syntactic structures. In the review article, this theoretical system is presented, its specific issues and accomplishments are exemplified, some technical objections are put forward, basic parallels with the generative grammar are discussed. Finally, some generalizations of the model are proposed, which nevertheless indirectly bear witness to its fruitfulness.

In this article, we will look at the Kalebend’s of Varna and provide some information on the city itself and its fortress. The etymological meaning of Kalebend will be given, and some information on its history, registers of Kalebend and documents will be also provided. Later, we will talk on the crimes that resulted in the punishment of Kalebend and its legal background. We will also deal with those who got sentenced with punishment of Kalebend, how they were transferred to the fortress where they were transferred for their sentence and how the legal procedures took place. The main sources for this research are mainly from the Presidential Ottoman Archives in Istanbul. The Registrar’s of Kalebends in this Archive are classified according to their subjects. We will examine these registrars and documents due to the fact that these are legal documents related to the topic and also crucial for the Ottoman diplomacy. The punishment of Kalebend which derives its legality from the Islamic law has its place in the Ottoman legal system. For this reason we aim to shed light on this topic with the help of archival documents and bring this topic to the attention of the academic world. The first document that I would like to talk about is on the Bulgarians exiled from Bulgaria to Diyarbekir.1 In this document which deals with Varna Kalebends, their punishments, kalebend registrars, the reason why such a punishment was given, crimes committed, the prisoners and their social status, the process of release of the prisoners helps us shed light to the legal and punishment system of the Ottoman Empire.

This is the second installment of a two-part essay. Limitations of space prevented the publication of the full essay in a previous issue of the Journal (Pereplyotchik 2020). My overall goal is to outline a strategy for integrating generative linguistics with a broadly pragmatist approach to meaning and communication. Two immensely useful guides in this venture are Robert Brandom and Paul Pietroski. Squarely in the Chomskyan tradition, Pietroski’s recent book, Conjoining Meanings, offers an approach to natural-language semantics that rejects foundational assumptions widely held amongst philosophers and linguists. In particular, he argues against extensionalism - the view that meanings are (or determine) truth and satisfaction conditions. Having arrived at the same conclusion by way of Brandom’s deflationist account of truth and reference, I’ll argue that both theorists have important contributions to make to a broader anti-extensionalist approach to language. Part 1 of the essay was largely exegetical, laying out what I see as the core aspects of Brandom’s normative inferentialism (1) and Pietroski’s naturalistic semantics (2). Now, in Part 2, I argue that there are many convergences between these two theoretical frameworks and, contrary to first appearances, very few points of substantive disagreement between them. If the integration strategy that I propose is correct, then what appear to be sharply contrasting commitments are better seen as interrelated verbal differences that come down to different - but complementary - explanatory goals. The residual disputes are, however, stubborn. I end by discussing how to square Pietroski’s commitment to predicativism with Brandom’s argument that a predicativist language is in principle incapable of expressing ordinary conditionals.

This study presents findings resulting from a comparative analysis of the system of nominal morphological markers in four dialects of Eastern Khanty (Vakh, Vasyugan, Surgut, and Salym). The analysis focused on the morphological markers that form paradigms of three nominal categories: case, number and possession, and aimed at revealing shared and unique features of Eastern Khanty dialects. The analysis was grounded in the descriptions and interpretations of language facts elicited from the Eastern Khanty speakers in the twentieth century and presented in several influential grammar studies of Khanty. These data were then compared with language data elicited from Vakh Khanty speakers in the course of fieldwork (2017—2019). Comparison with current data displayed an overall stability of the Eastern Khanty nominal system which had remained almost unchanged despite the ongoing influence of the Russian language. Although the nominal categories in question are shared by the four Eastern dialects of Khanty, the comparative analysis of their paradigms has revealed some controversial issues regarding the status of some markers, their forms and use. The contradictions within these three categories are associated with the morphemic representation, terminology and status of some markers. The system of case markers is the most controversial. All in all, there are nine productive case markers in the Eastern Khanty varieties: nominative, ablative, allative, lative, locative, abessive, comitative, oblique, and translative accompanied by the distributive marker that is restricted in use.

This article accounts for the traditionally-labelled Level 1/Level 2 affix distinction in English by combining the predictions of floating segmental structure (e.g. Rubach 1996) and cyclic spell-out by phase (Chomsky 1999; Marantz 2007). It offers insight not only into the different phonological patterns these affixes trigger, but importantly, explains when the same affix will trigger distinct phonological patterns (when an affix behaves sometimes as Level 1 and sometimes as Level 2). It is argued that Level 1 affixes are distinguished by an initial floating vowel in their underlying representations, and that if we combine this with the proposal that affixes that merge directly to roots are interpreted in the same phonological cycle as these roots then we can remove the reference to diacritic notions such as Level 1 and Level 2 from the grammar. This then allows for a fully modular account of English affix classes, where the phonological derivation refers solely to phonological representations.

Grammar teaching is one of the fields of study related to language-oriented teaching. What grammar is and with what content and how it should be taught has long been a matter of discussion both in linguistics and in the field of educational science since the antique age. These issues have been discussed in terms of linguistics and pedagogy. Grammar teaching, which is sometimes seen as equivalent to language education, has been accepted as a language teaching tool today. In this study, current issues in mother tongue teaching are discussed and compared in terms of different views. The results show that discussions on what grammar is and with what content and how it should be taught remain its currency. Theories that are at the center of current discussions are generally discussed along with the application dimension. According to the results obtained it has been seen that that many contemporary grammar teaching approaches, especially functional grammar and constructivism cannot be adequately reflected in the teaching processes. Accordingly, it is revealed that although some current approaches are put forward, language teachers cannot break away from traditional practices for different reasons. It is seen as a necessity to show concrete ways to practitioners in the field by synthesizing the views put forward on grammar teaching.

The revival of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian) popular movement in the 1860s (the “Narodovci” period) was accompanied by a new generation of grammars of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian) language: Mykhajlo Osadca’s grammar of 1862 was used in gymnasia, Pylyp Djačan’s — in elementary schools. Both authors were Greek Catholic clergymen from the larger Ternopil area who had been students at the Institute of Slavic Studies in Vienna before they became teachers in the Academic gymnasium of Lviv and published their works in Lviv’s Stauropegial Institute. Nonetheless, their linguistic norms differed significantly, as did their attitude toward typically Galician and non-Galician language practices. Both works look antiquated against the background of grammars that were published only slightly later, such as Omeljan Partyc’kyj’s grammar of 1873. Their shortcomings and mutual contradictions notwithstanding, these two grammars contributed to the gradual establishment of Modern Standard Ukrainian.

This is the last part of the book THE SECRET OF GENIALITY (Yerevan, Armenia, Noyan Tapan Printing House, 2002) written by our colleague Robert Djidjian. We published this book not only because we all must know the philosophical research and creation (in our domain of epistemology and philosophy of science and technology) from a wider geographic area than that provided by the established fashion in virtue of both extra–scientific reasons and a yet obsolete manner to communicate and value the research; but also because the book as such is living, challenging and very instructive. The title of the book is suggestive enough to make us to focus on an old problem: the dialectic of the insight, of the discovery – its psychology moving between flashes of intuitions and knowledge stored in memory – and its logic of composition of knowledge from hypotheses to their demonstration and verification. The realm of science is most conducive to the understanding of this dialectic and the constitution of the ideas which are the proofs of what is the most certain for humans: the “world 3”, as Popper called the kingdom of human results of their intellection, and though transient and perishable in both their uniqueness and cosmic fate, the only certain proof of the reason to be of homo sapiens in the frame of multiversal existence. Therefore, the power to create is the secret of the human geniality, and how to create science is a main part of this secret. This last part of the book is that of the Appendix the author added especially in order to highlight the methodology of the scientific discovery and the dialectical principles of both knowledge and the world. Highlighting the big problems or theories as ”mysteries” and elucidating them by revealing the contradictions that lead to new theories and prefigures not only a new basis of understanding but also new problems makes the philosophy of science to appear here exciting as in the research of a detective. The clear explanation of concepts, the unexpected links between domains and between theories of different domains, the impeccable logic of inferences, the sense of humour and the integrative approach where the history of ideas formation is crossed by the red thread of the methodological goal make the reading of – not only this part but – the entire book a useful and enjoyable event for anyone. The book is a tool in the intellectual development so necessary nowadays.

The paper analyzes the whole population of the statistically significant open mouth collocation (488 tokens), drawing on theories like Construction Grammar Approach to Argument Structure (Goldberg, Croft), Valency Theory (Herbst and Schüller), Radical Construction Grammar (Croft). An eight-step procedure is used in identifying, categorizing and classifying the language-specific emergent constructions with their construction-specific grammatical categories. They are the primitive units of syntactic representation organized in taxonomies of part-whole inheritance semantic relations. In an attempt at giving an explanation of the collocation-specific constructions and their emergent uses, typology theory and theory of language (Croft) are an intergral part of the methodology thus making the description cross-linguistically valid and the description of the morphosyntactic structures comparable not only within but also across languages.
