This paper presents the questions that led to the field research, the theoretical frame, the subsequent methodology, and some of the results and conclusions. One of these conclusions is the need of specific tasks aimed at lexicon acquisition and of interdisciplinary work within that acquisition. Some strategies of minimizing failure and e learning enhancement will also be discussed, as well as the learning results achieved in the strict area of lexicon acquisition.

This research aims at analysing the text production of students from a Brazilian public school, inserted in the educational system of the Rio de Janeiro state, located at the outskirts of the town, in order to understand, through their written texts, their expectations regarding what is to be succeeded. The results point to the perception that, in constructing different ways of accessing the education as a dream, the students a) put in evidence one of the main forms of class division, the one that separates those who have from those who do no have access to education; b) they discursively reify the perception that the education is a commodity as, for instance a house or a car, but c) they usually don’t know how to get or what to do with this good.

The present paper deals with the phenomenon of synonymy displayed by a geographical text elaborated at the end of the 18th century. There are analyzed the synonymic series, observing their etymological structure, the weight held by lexical borrowing, loan-translations, translations and old terms in each synonymic series as well as their viability. The synonymic series are numerous, enriching the cult vocabulary of the literary language, highly contributing to the refining of its stylistic capacity. They demonstrate the author’s effort of creating an adequate scientific terminology, with all the insignia of modern science.

Ne-am hotărât să dedicăm un număr al revistei Vatra artei şi tehnicii traducerii. Intenţia noastră a fost, pe această cale, să-i ascultăm şi să aducem un omagiu celora care îşi trec cu modestie numele undeva pe pagina de gardă, cu litere destul de mici. S-au ocupat de arta şi metodologia traducerii, în texte mai mult sau mai puţin întinse: Goethe, Schopenhauer, Matew Arnold, Paul Valèry, Ezra Pound, I.A. Richards, Benedetto Croce, Walter Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset şi lista poate continua pânã în zilele noastre. Iar Cicero este primul care ne spune cã nu se traduce verbum pro verbo. Există şi o teorie a traducerii, lingviştii cei mai reputaţi s-au exprimat. Fenomenul globalizării a dus la creşterea interesului faţă de traductologie. Ce înseamnă a traduce? Primul răspuns consolator ar fi: a spune acelaşi lucru într-o altă limbă. Să folosim o definiţie dată de Umberto Eco: A traduce înseamnă a înţelege mecanismul interior al unei limbi şi structura unui anumit text din acea limbă, iar apoi a construi o copie a mecanismului textual care, dintr-o anumită perspectivă, să poată produce efecte asemănătoare asupra cititorului, atât în plan semantic şi sintactic, cât şi în cel stilistic, metric, fonosilabic, precum şi în efectele sentimentale spre care tindea textul-sursă. El mai spune că traducerea se află sub semnul negocierii... (pentru a se obţine ceva se renunţă la altceva). Cine cu cine negociază câtă vreme nu există consimţământul implicit al părţilor? Negociem cu autorul, cu cititorul, cu editorul chiar.

MOTIVATION FOR PARTICIPATING TO SPORTS COMPETITIONS IN SCHOOL

The purpose of this study was to identify the students’ motivation for participating to sports competitions in school. For this approach, we have identified a stratified random sample made up of 515 boys and 338 girls. The questionnaire we have used has included three categories of reasons for the participation to sports actions: social motives, sports motives and health-promotion motives, intrinsic and extrinsic. The data obtained have emphasized positive results for both genders, on the three motivation directions: “fun and joy”; “the wish of being healthy”; “the wish of being part of a team”. Motivations such as “the wish of being the best, of being a champion”; “the wish of being popular”; “the wish to compete” were frequent among boys, while girls have mostly social and recreational motives: making new friends, maintaining a health body, fitness. Hence, the combination of the pleasure to participate to the competition and the wish to make new friends are the ways through which we can also increase the number of girls who participate to school competitions.

Irony and argumentation in Portuguese parliamentary discourse. The aim of this paper is to study argumentation in political discourse, namely in parliamentary discourse, the focus being the relations between irony and argumentation. Since Antiquity, irony has been seen as a rhetorical device, used in oratory for purposes of discourse efficiency. The present day political discourse stems from the same rhetorical tradition. Being one of the favourite discursive mechanisms of political persuasion, irony is an argumentative device common in parliamentary debates, a highly controversial and confrontational discursive subgenre, where opposite parties clash. By its evaluative nature and perlocutionary effect of criticizing the political opponents, irony contributes to the argumentation process, relying particularly on the images that it creates. The corpus we analyse contains excerpts of speeches given in plenary sittings that took place in the Portuguese Assembly between September 15th, 2010 and May 19th, 2011.

Nanoparticles have a special place in nanoscience and nanotechnology, not only because of their particular properties resulting from their reduced dimensions, but also because they are promising building blocks for more complex nanostructures. Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 enzyme with greater potency than COX-1 does. The adverse effects can occur when NSAIDs are used for a long time, leading to gastrointestinal and renal dysfunctions. Nanoparticles of diclofenac are nanotransporters that facilitate the intracellular penetration and can reduce the side-effects of uncorporated diclofenac. Nanoparticles incorporating diclofenac have been made using various polymers and different stabilizers. The most important parameters in the characterization of nano-systems are the particle size and their size distribution in the colloidal solution, the Zeta potential, the polymorphism, the crystallization level, the degree of drug loading and its release profile.

Address Forms in a Multisystemic Approach: A New Theoretical Model of Analysis. The aim of this paper is to propose a new theoretical model for the analysis of address forms. In the first part of the paper, I do a critical evaluation of existing theoretical models, showing, on the one hand, that the divergent approaches reflect the complexity of address research, and, on the other hand, that there is a need for a unified model to englobe morphosyntactic, semantic, pragmatic, discursive, and diachronic approaches. In the second part of the paper, I present the multisystemic theory developed by the Brazilian linguist Ataliba de Castilho and demonstrate that it can be successfully used for the analysis of address forms. In the last part of the paper, I show that lexicalization, semanticization, discursivization, and grammaticalization (linguistic processes identified by Ataliba de Castilho in his theory) can explain linguistic phenomena of the address systems in Portuguese and Romanian.

Preeclampsia is a disease which characterizes up to 10% of the pregnancies due to the elevated blood pressure that occurs during the third trimester of labour. As preeclampsia evolves into a severe condition, more factors should be taken into account. The paper proposes a three layered weighted network consisting of illnesses, symptoms and treatments. The network is used to determine the secondary illnesses of the pregnant women. The human disease and the symptom ontologies developed by the Northwestern University from the United States of America, offer information about the first two characteristics and they have been used at the creation phase of the corresponding layers. The treatments given by doctors build the third layer of the weighted network. The illnesses patterns are determined based on the three layer network. Some of the illnesses which characterize the presence of preeclampsia are constipation, cystitis, retinal detachment, lactic acidosis, hepatic coma, and the HELLP syndrome. Based on the analysis, it was proved that many patients have glomerular endotheliosis. In the severe cases of preeclampsia, hemolysis, and low platelets, a sign of HELPP syndrome, are some of the most often illnesses. Medical professionals are able to improve the existent layers of the considered network through the use of an intuitive graphical user interface. This also allows other doctors to learn and apply new principles while treating their patients who develop preeclampsia and further secondary diseases. The proposed solution enhances the illness definition, development and monitoring process, thus improving the lives of many pregnant women and their unborn children.

The volume of migration has reached its highest in Turkey and globally. As such irregular migration grows with the growing international migration. Discrimination against irregular migrants due to their status is as unacceptable as the criminalization of irregular migration. However, migrants’ social rights, especially the right to health care, despite some exceptions, are often restricted. This study aims to explore access to health care for Azerbaijani irregular migrants living in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul. The study was conducted using in-depth interviews with 26 irregular immigrants from Azerbaijan, 23 of whom were men and 3 women. Besides, statistical data from official institutions were used. The findings show that irregular migrants’ access to healthcare is very limited in Turkey. This may have the risk of a higher burden on the healthcare system in the future, as well as negatively affecting public health. A new and more inclusive health policy is needed to respect human rights.

Numerous Portuguese texts and paratexts from the era of the dual monarchy (1580-1640) are characterised by eulogies of the Lusitanian language that fulfill the task of defending its prestige over Spanish. Between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, when the production of translations, grammars, dictionaries and other glottodidactic tools of various natures increased, the memory of the ancient praises was relied upon for purposes that were (justifying the study of Portuguese as a foreign language), politico- cultural (defending the dignity of Portuguese within the neo-Latin stock; making space for the Lusitanian literary tradition in the European cultural space), and commercial (in the context of the modern publishing industry, creating a market for Lusophone texts and manuals).
