In Steaua zimbrului (The Star of the Bison) (1971) one notices the extremely hazardous ambition to explain both the modality of the configuration of a myth (read of the legend) reconfiguration of the data of the historical fact and the reasonable mechanisms which determined the demythologizing of another fairy-tale and its introduction into the extreme data (delimited and limitative) of the historical fact. To integrate both the rational and the irrational into a historical reality in a dramatic poem, in spite of the many inclinations towards myth, and especially to challenge the artistic expression of two totally opposed processes, birth and the suppression of “the germinal metaphor”, represents an excessive task, the author betraying himself with his own instruments.

A native of Cincu-Mare, journalist and Romanian scholar Valeriu Braniște led for a while the periodical Tribuna from Sibiu, so that, following some animosities with Eugen Brote, but also some promises left to Banat, where together with Cornel Diaconovich, established the periodical Dreptatea. Following 1896, V. Braniște thought Romanian, German and Hungarian language for a year, at the renowned educational institution Andrei Șaguna Secondary School from Brașov. In 1897, he was called in Chernivtsi, where enjoyed freedom in editing the periodical Patria. He came into conflict with the Austrian authorities, a fact that determined him to reach again in Banat, by the call of the Romanian political leaders from the area. He set up in Lugoj, where he led the Romanian periodical Drapelul, whose editor and owner was to become. From the point of view of cultural-national manifestations, V. Braniște managed both the administration of Societatea pentru Fond de teatru român and was secretary of Astra Lugoj Department, mainly after 1902. He was a cultural propagandist of the Association, holding in Banat, lectures for the nation and conferences for the intellectuals. He edited books that entered the holdings of libraries for the nation in the area of the Association departments from Lugoj, Caransebeș, Oravița and Timișoara, mainly between 1902 and 1924. Between 1914 and 1918, V. Braniște was under surveillance of Police Prefecture from Torontal County, but also under that of intelligence structures of Austro-Hungary, being considered the spy of Romania in this area and a firm militant of the Association in Banat.

Ion Chinezu's correspondence, a forerunner of his time, the leader of the Romanian interwar publication "Gînd românesc", reveals other aspects of his personality, apart from the known ones. Besides the documentary side, the exchange of letters between him and Basil Munteanu proves spiritual affinities, common shared values, journalistic recommendations, concerns in the area of literary relations. One can also see how friendship influences, shapes, highlights certain depths of soul. Sometimes it involves tighter exchange of ideas, but despite them, it preserves its moral value. Keeping a friendship involves a discipline of mind, a ritual, and as we will see in this case, the common interest to facilitate the development of culture.

With a few exceptions, the literary magazines of the Romanian diaspora are not in the spotlight of literary criticism and history in the country. It is true that there have been and still are magazines, newspapers, papers published by amateurs, for longer or shorter times, but there are also publications edited by well-known writers in the Romanian literary landscape. Such a writer, of national stature and well-deserved prestige, was also Valeriu Anania, the metropolitan scholar Bartolomeu of Cluj, Crişana, Alba and Maramureş. Little is known that in early ’70s, while he was in America, in Detroit, as head of the publications department of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate in America and Canada, he founded and edited a literary magazine, with a less literary title, noi (we). And precisely because the magazine appeared for a short time and with only a small press run, obviously, it is somehow natural not to know too much about it. The article presents the moment of the magazine’s establishment and various aspects related to its content.

Through this study we tried to draw the complex personality of The Very Reverend Protopresbyter Aurel Munteanu, martyred, together with the gendarme Gheorghe Nicula, on September 10, 1940, in Huedin, by the Horthist authorities installed in northwestern Transylvania following the Dictate of Vienna (August 30, 1940). In the fi rst part I presented the biography and the pastoral-missionary and cultural activity of The Very Reverend Protopresbyter Aurel Munteanu and I reserved the second part for the details of the martyrdom itself and of the trials that took place in 1941 at the Hungarian Royal Court in Cluj and in 1946 at the People’s Court of Cluj, in order to convict those who contributed to the assassination of The Very Reverend Father and of the gendarme. Both crimes were committed by the Hungarian military and civilian authorities, which is a serious attack on the Romanian people and on all of humanity.

Educated in the Kiev Academy, following the advice of Metropolitan Iosif Naniescu and his conviction that „for Orthodoxy, Russian literature is true wealth, source of pure Orthodox creation and education”, Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu will prepare for this purpose and will be one of the most prolific translators from Russian. His works of translation reflect a vivid orientation towards the theology of creation, towards the theology of the liturgical time, of the prayers and of the history of personalities. As for the translation of the Bible, he was preoccupied about the idea of the illustrated edition, but also about the correctness of the translation. From the time of his theological formation he was very dedicated to the Church and to preserving its dignity. He was a man of peace, a man of study and translation, a founder, a fine and attentive observer of social developments, a defender of the Romanians’ faith and dignity, withdrawn and solitary, never hasty with his words, but firm and unrelenting, a spirit in the spirit of saint Paisius of Neamţ.

The article describes aspects of writer Valeriu Anania’s biography and literary creation as they result from an interview made by Gheorghe Cunescu in 1972 and published in the magazine “Vatra”. The interview was re-published in the volume “Out of the Foams of the Sea. Pages on Religion and Culture”. In the fi rst part of the interview, the poet is asked to introduce himself; in the next fragment, Valeriu Anania tells about his poetic and dramaturgical debuts. In the next part of the interview, the author talks about the origin of the myth of Master-builder Manole, but also about the symbolism of his work, Star of Aurochs. At the end of the interview, Valeriu Anania, provoked by G. Cunescu, speaks about the phenomenon of Romanian culture and literature more or less present in the States.

The article refers to the volume File de acatist (Acathist Pages) by the writer Valeriu Anania, where we find the acatists of St. John the Wallachian and St. Hierarch Calinic from Cernica. Adopting the hymn-acathist formula, Valeriu Anania achieves another unique literary approach. In Romanian literature, the acathist as a poetic formula is unusual. In choosing the formula of the acathist, he was inspired by the Byzantine poets and in his ceremony of discourse „the hymnic jubilee is conjugated with the humble and solemn intonation” and choosing his own way which makes him different from the orthodox Gândirea literary movement. In the acathist dedicated to St. John the Wallachian, the worship of St. John the Wallachian is full of ardor. The second cycle of File de Acathist, dedicated to Saint Calinic from Cernica, is complementary to the first and completing the portrait of the one who chose the path of the purifying monasticism, irradiating light and being a support for his brothers in suffering.

This text is an exegesis of the poem „Simon of Cyrene” by Valeriu Anania. Poet, but also a theologian truly living the biblical drama, Valeriu Anania depicts Simon of Cyrene, not as one of the possible„brave” supporters on their shoulders (figuratively) of the Cross of Christ, but as the only real one,„chosen” from the crowd that, on Palm Sunday, had acclaimed Him, and, a few days later, while on the way to His crucifixion at Golgotha, blamed the Teacher who had done only good and was now, in a blatant injustice, the „scapegoat” for their eternal sins. A dramatic poet par excellence, Valeriu Anania puts Simon of Cyrene in an exponential role, respectively in a dialogical instance after what happened on the road to Golgotha, the interlocutor – silent – being none other than the One who was helped, crucified, then risen from the dead and ascended to heaven. In the poetic hypostasis of this historical (and artistic) character, we could read „between the lines” a kind of lyrical synthesis of the force lines from the Arghezi’s psalms.

We observe in the religious discourse of Metropolitan Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania a series of metalinguistic facts represented by explanations (erminia), corrections and interpretations (diorthosis) that converge towards what we can call palingenesis of the language. More precisely, we are not interested in the action of the language, as a natural organism, of recovery and regeneration of some characters of linguistic order. Not so much to convince and attract, as to educate and fulfill the needs of knowledge and to transmit the biblical message, the communications of Metropolitan Bartholomeu draw attention to some elements of the evolution of the linguistic code that need to be presented by reporting the context of their appearance.

Beyond the service of the Church and of his fellow men, Bartolomeu Anania never abandoned the realm of literature, so dear to him even since his early studies. Since 1978 he has been a member of the Romanian Writers 'Union, and in 1982 he was awarded the Dramaturgy Prize of the Romanian Writers' Union. Also, since November 22, 2010 he is an member of honor of the Romanian Academy. The excellent memorialist shows his qualities here too - so the "present" plan is the most vivid and successful - but unfortunately it is not doubled by an equally good fiction creator. The sacred phenomenon, Christian influences until the twentieth century are presented in religious poetry and biblical echoes. Confession, faith, then religious motives are influences of Christian values in connection with the great culture of the world. The word itself has a dual power; it may be good or bad, but it is morally neutral. It is man who gives it the moral dimension. In Valeriu Anania's vision, an important place is given to the earth, the sacred place from which the path to the absolute starts, the integration in universality. The memoirs, essayes, journal articles, diaries are the writings that the researcher gathers with the scope of probing the author's inner space.
