The study aims to highlight the role played by Christian faith in the life of political prisoners in Communist Romania during 1945-1964. Our interest will focus on those "spiritual groups" which were formed in prisons and I mention here only the one led by the young Valeriu Gafencu, who died in prison. These groups of prisoners were able, through Christian faith, to resist and preserve national and spiritual values that the Communists wanted to destroy. Through solidarity, these people have managed to save their own memory and thereby their personal and national identity. Those who survived and left the prison wrote their memories in order to keep alive for the next generations what happened in communist prisons. Some of these books have a strong message, talking about faith, solidarity, spiritual and national identity. One of the most famous books is “Return to Christ”, written by Ioan Ianolide, one of Valeriu Gafencu’s disciples. Therefore, the second objective of our study is to put in evidence the destiny of this work in the consciousness of the contemporary Romanian society.

Assuming the task to present St. Calinic of Cernica as seen by the poet Valeriu Anania, the author justifies his metapoetic approach through the need to provide the contemporary Romanian society with historical landmarks and patterns of life and action, among which those of its saints. In this regard, he first briefly evokes the current and traditional cult of St. Calinic, a monk and bishop in the XX century, to whose canonization - in 1955, in full communist regime (!) – the theologian writer Valeriu Anania had his contribution, by exhuming the relics and placing them in the reliquary. From this „unutterable” experience and with the above motivation, Valeriu Anania, in Aiud prison, will begin, in his mind, to compose the acathist named „The enlightener”, dedicated to St. Calinic, along with another one named, „The enlightened” dedicated to St. John the Wallachian, martyred in the XVII century by the Turks for refusing to move to the Muslim faith - both texts being included in the volume. „Acathist pages” (1976). The present project has three basic sequences, entitled „Acathist pages” by Valeriu Anania - „a unique intertwining between political and religious poetry”, the poem dedicated to St. Calinic - „The enlightener”, - a necessary comparison, and the theme of an anagogical portrait „in motion” - by adding to previous interpretations of literary critics such as Liviu Petrescu and Lucian Vasile Bâgiu, his own perspectives and additions, emphasizing the literal, allegorical, moral and anagogical meanings of the (religious) text as well as a minimum inventory of poetic forms and modalities for characterization of a „saint among men,” „totally perfect” as it was and remains St. Calinic of Cernica.

This essay is focused on the so-called `the poetry of solitude` in Valeriu Anania’s poems. We try to follow the imaginary structure and the re-conversion of the Biblical myths in some philosophic symbols that occurs in his poetry. As he confessed, his poetry was written `deep the mind`, on the unusual pages of the soul, during the time when he was imprisoned by the Communist system in one of the most aggressive prisons from Romania, where no paper and no pencil were allowed. That is why, in a severe and painful solitude, the poet decided to write poetry as a fundamental gesture to climb the invisible way to Divinity and, as well, as a form to protect himself from the cruelty of the political system. Obviously, Valeriu Anania’s poetry (publishes after he was free) is a perfect example for the the so-called `literature with curative sense`, as well a religious lesson about the main important steps to accede to Aletheia

Nicodim Munteanu, the second patriarch of the Orthodox Church in Romania is one of the few direct disciples of Saint Joseph the Merciful. The Holy Hierarch was involved in the formation of his apprentice, modeling, financing and fighting for the promotion of young Nicolae, who later became Nicodim. Like the founding right, Saint Joseph not only helped Nicodim to carry out simple administrative functions, but invested in him his entire attention, developing him from a simple seminarian student, a true pillar of the Church. The financing of the studies, the promotion in the hierarchical steps and last but not least the training in the rigor of the hesychastic life promoted by Saint Paisie, by Veniamin Costache and by Saint Joseph were to help the young Nicolae throughout his life, and through him, the hesychastic heritage was about to continue. The present work is intended to be an historical incursion, during the late 19th century, a systematic and objective presentation of the main stages about the climbing of the monastic steps by the young monk Nicodim Munteanu.

The purpose of our paper is to provide a few pieces of spiritual advice and teachings on the Christian faith as found in Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu’s writing: Ce să crezi și cum să trăiești? Adecă schema credinței și moralei creștine. The work we refer to was written in 1905 and it is among the first publications of the above-mentioned author, who was at the time administrative vicar of the diocese Dunărea de Jos (1902-1909). Written in a clear and simple manner, with a deep dogmatic and moral character, his work is representative even today for the believers’ spiritual growth.

In the early days of 1919, the young student Liviu Galaction Munteanu was preparing, like most of his colleagues at the Theological Institute of Sibiu, to leave the way he began more than a year ago, to follow a different path, attracted by the many opportunities arising for the young people of Transylvania in a recently unified Romania. The farewell meeting and particularly the discussion he had with his beloved professor Nicolae Balan, the future Metropolitan of Transylvania, made him find precise and definitive answers to his struggles about his true mission in the Romanian society in the first decades of the twentieth century. The poem „Apocrifă”, from the volume Anamneze (1984), focuses on the episode of the Annunciation from the Gospel of St. Luke, more precisely the Incarnation. Valeriu Anania gradually follows this event, poetically transposed in the dialogue between the angel and Virgin Mary, in which the whole nature takes part, with an overwhelming calm. Through the metaphors and verbs he used, through images of a special plasticity, this poetry acquires a great visionary density, found both in the author’s dramaturgy and poetry.

the piece by composer Viorel Munteanu reveals the symbiosis between past musical ages and modernity, between established compositional techniques (of the string orchestra) and contemporary sound emission processes (the solo flute). The syntaxes of past trends in music, polyphony and homophony, as well as modern treatments of rhythm, such as polyrhythm, coexist felicitously and result in a type of musical thought that, although anchored in the past, looks forward to the future. Rhythm can be considered from various metric perspectives, especially in the faster parts of the concerto. Rhythmic layers are present both vertically (polyrhythms) and horizontally (polyphons of rhythms); the cross of the two variants is of particular interest. The aksak rhythm, characteristic of the Balkan area, may come as a surprise as it briefly occurs in Part III; this unexpected element brings an inspired change of horizon, followed by a return to the previous giusto expression. The form of the last part, Rondo, can also be discussed from a modern perspective, rooted in the past; it could actually be placed within in the Rondo-Sonata pattern; however, its sound contour does not belong to the tonal sphere, but rather to a form of extended modalism. The soloist instrument merges with the string orchestra and emerges from it, in a discourse that clearly bears the mark of the composer’s creative personality. The most successful element of the work is its expressiveness, the way in which the compositional and technical means are subordinated to the aesthetic message that Viorel Munteanu intends to transmit to the public.

This article aims at offering a radiography of unexpected events in Romanian history through the eyes of a writer, Valeriu Anania (1921-2011). His volume of Memories is very unusual. Valeriu Anania ‘s dream was to excel in writing poetry and theatre. He followed the religious path of becoming a monk. Later Anania became Archbishop and Metropolitan of Cluj-Napoca. His spiritual vocation was very ardent. His book, “Memorii”, is a testimony of a man who chooses to be faithful to his conscience. He chose to tell the truth about his tribulations in prisons as well as about all his choices, bad and good. Anania willed special provisions about the publication of his manuscript only after his death. This way he was not tempted to embellish the truth about him. In his high-school years, Anania fancied the extremist "green shirts" youth "brotherhood”organizations because he liked their system of recruiting (faith in God, initiation, unavailability, and promised heroism). Anania never became legionary in any form of adherence. His rejection of the extremist group started in his youth. Even then, in his youth, because of his faith in God and of his deep desire to follow the path of devotion to God, he realized that he made a mistake trusting impetuousness. As a former prisonier, Anania was to suffer a stigma all his life. He had not been a follower of what was to become the extreme right. In the light of his wise age while writing the memories, this episode becomes an anatomy of a disenchantment but also a way to understand the tensions of a turbulent epoch. Instead of a pact with the reader, Valeriu Anania commits to telling the whole truth. As a genuine connector of people, more the cenobite type of monk, Bartolomeu Anania found his vocation in organizing the cultural life and education of Orthodox monasteries in Romania and U.S.A.

The present research is about the activity of Bishop Nicodim Munteanu in Bessarabia (1918-1919), the future Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, who remains an emblematic figure of the Romanian Church and culture of all times, thanks to his insistence on performing the first acts of ecclesiastical, administrative and Romanian unification of the eparchial Chancellery and theological schools in Bessarabia.
