This study presents the Collective Archives of the Archdiocese Alba Iulia established in the last eight years in: Alba Iulia, Gherla (one Catholic and one Armenian Catholic), Sfântu Gheorghe, Târgu Mureş, Gheorgheni, Odorheiu Secuiesc and Cluj. In this presentation one could find historian data of the deaneries and parishes, where the archival documents from the archival centres are collected. It refers to the main creators of the Roman Catholic fonds of the Archdiocese Alba Iulia, preserving the written memory of the smaller ecclesiastical administrative structure. It provides definitions for research knowledge and history of ecclesiastical institutions, but also contributes to the archivology of Roman Catholic Church in Transylvania

The Creation of Năsăud Border Regiments Funds

Immediately after Năsăud bordering regiments were established, the Court of Vienna took several decisions in order to create the necessary funds for the administration of the bordering districts of Transylvania. These actions were confirmed by the Military Regulations of 1766. Art. 75 of this act mentioned that the incomes of the Rodna Military District would be directed to the “welfare of Năsăud Regiment and the Province Fund was created and it would be the common property of the border guards”. Another fund created in Năsăud Military District was the Monture Fund, representing the common property of the bordering villages. It was directed to military clothes of the border-guards and included better materials. One should consider that until 1830, when the fund was created, they used to make their uniform at home. The militarisation of Năsăud border had the greatest impact on education. These effects were most visible after the regiment was suppressed and especially after 1861, when the funds were given back one by one to their right owners. The greatest defender of these rights was the theacher Vasile Naşcu and the deacon of Năsăud, Macedon Pop, and after 1858 his successor Grigore Moisil.

The Woman Status in Ion Neculce’s Letopiseț

This essay analyzes the status of woman in Moldova between the 17th and 18th centuries. The main source is the Moldavian chronicle Letopisețul Țării Moldovei [The Chronicle of the Land of Moldavia], written by Ion Neculce in 1733, covering events from 1661 to 1743. Being a representative voice of local boyars, Neculce knew the Moldavian society very well. Through his humanist writings, in which he adopted critical attitudes against the immorality of the noble class, he managed to emanicipate it. Along with the narratives of Neculce regarding the status of woman, the legal and administrative sources can help us to define real women’s profile in the 17th and 18th centuries. As the documents prove, the dowry was a statuary element of a marriage, a real family obligation. The dowry was from the legal point of view the woman’s property and the husband had only a beneficial right

In Romania, censorship, as an independent organization, was formed in 1949, having been called “General Department for Press and Publications” (DGPT) and the protection of State Secrets did not enter into its duties. Censorships’ attempts to monopolize the “State secret” must be explained by the influence the Soviet censorship had on similar Romanian institutions. The understanding of censorship mechanism could contribute to the declassification of many documents inaccessible today in the archives.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the mission and implementation of digital libraries from a historian’s perspective. This paper summarizes the abstract qualities that historians look for in their sources, and then compares various digital archives both qualitatively and quantitatively, highlighting design features that enhance or detract from the ease of use. Preservation is the paramount mission of research libraries. Digital interfaces should contain images of original documents, html text documents hold little interest. Site interfaces should enable users to browse and zoom with minimal mouse clicks. Downloadable viewers should be avoided. Simple browsing is more important than keyword searching. Google Books sets the standard for digital information, and digital librarians can measure their site interface by that yardstick. This paper provides feedback to administrators of digital libraries. It gives library scientists candid opinions from an intensive end user of digital information, contains several practical suggestions, and explains the reasoning behind those suggestions.

L’auteur présente plusieurs pièces qui proviennent des Archives Nationales Historiques Centrales de Bucarest, de la collection Matrices sigillaires. Ces matrices sigillaires à l’aide desquelles on imprime le sceau sur les documents, ont des formes ovales et rondes, sont confectionnées en laiton, sont gravées en excision ou en incision, ont des dimensions variables et ont sur leur emblème les armoiries héraldiques de la Moldavie, les armoiries héraldiques de la Valachie et les armoiries réunies des Principautés Roumaines. On analyse l’emblème des ces matrices sigillaires concernant: l’écu, les émaux, les meubles, les ornements extérieurs, les supports, la légende.

Re-interpreting the Past: Shifting Perspectives from a Commercial Archival Fond in the Bulgarian Historical Archive

This article offers a historiographical interpretation of an exceptionally rich personal archive; namely, fond Number 6: “Tŭrgovska kŭshta [Commercial Company] ‘Khristo P. Tŭpchileshtov’”, kept in Bŭlgarski istoricheski arkhiv (Bulgarian Historical Archive), Narodna Biblioteka (National Library) “Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodiĭ” in Sofia. The analysis is organized around three issues: the biography of the archive’s founder; the acquisition of the archive by the National Library; and the ways the archival material has been interpreted in the Bulgarian historiography. More specifically, I am discussing the ideological motivation behind the arrangement of the documents and their multiple uses in the historical studies during the interwar, socialist, and post-socialist periods. There is a paradoxical situation: the fond Number 6 is not only one of the biggest archival personal collections but also one of the least actually used archives. And yet, one of the most cited in Bulgarian historical research. Accordingly, the fond provides a window into more substantial historiographical issues. I am arguing that the way the fond was catalogued by its first archivist, predetermined the way it was interpreted in the subsequent historiography; namely, within the confines of a national narrative almost ignoring the ample information about the Ottoman, Balkan, and European context.
