The Muslim Minority of Western Thrace, 1945-1999: A strained saga
The Muslim community of Western Thrace emerged onto the geo-political landscape as a result of the Treaty of Lausanne (23 July 1923) that ended the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-1922. The Treaty was preceded (30 January 1923) by a bilateral Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations, which exempted from its provisions the ‘Moslem inhabitants of Western Thrace’ and the ‘Greek inhabitants of Constantinople’, who were subjected to special protective measures.
