The article presents social relations in the sphere of intimate life among the ancient Greeks and Romans. Numeros archaeological finds give evidence of this: decorated vessels, pendants, amulets, wedding rings, cults, myths and legends, as well as written sources associated with intimate relations and customary practice. The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina holds 74 objects of erotic nature from Antiquity.

Istoriografija i seksualnost (polnost): skica za istoriju jedne discipline

In Serbian historiography history of sexuality developed within (or together with) gender history. Along with several rare exemptions, both disciplines emerged during the 1990's. As for history of sexuality, the first wave of studies dealt with medical and legal issues, such as abortion, divorce and prostitution. The similar development could be traced in other historiographies. This thematic disbalance derived partly from the nature of the first discovered sources (public health institutions, courts, police documentation). In the 21st century, history of sexuality flourished, as well as gender history, and for that matter, all other kinds of social history. Especially after 2010, relatively many published works dwelled on the LGBTQ topics. However, synthetic works such monographs are still missing.

Lakodalmak a Székely családban

The purpose of our study is to present some customs and traditions related to 18th century Transylvanian marriages. The study aims at interpreting a wide range of published and unpublished biographical works from the 17-18th century, all regarding marriages in the Székely family. From these diaries, autobiographies, memoirs, written by members of the political elite, stands out the unpublished autobiography of Count László Székely, which provides a great amount of data regarding our subject. Grounded in the Count’s very personal and emotional narratives, the paper briefly sketches the way our ancestors entered into marriage, from the fi rst encounters and betrothal to ecclesiastical and secular wedding ceremonies.

On Feminisms in Czech Political Contexts

This paper is suggesting a periodization of Czech emancipist women’s movement within historical, political and other contexts, from the perspective of feminist analysis. The first phase (roughly up to 1860s – 1870s) represents the beginnings of of the movement. This period of the emancipist movement was much influenced by liberal thoughts, namely those of John Stuart Mill. The main emphasis was put on female education. During the second phase (up to the end of the First World War and establishing of independent Czechoslovakia), new political aims were articulated, especially the struggle for the female suffrage. In 1905, a “Committee for women’s suffrage” was founded. This phase can be characterized as a shift from more vague emancipism to feminism as a political program. The period between the First and Second World Wars is often called as a „Golden age of feminism in the Czech country“. By the constitution of the new state, education became equal for all the citizens, women got the right to vote and be elected. Czech feminist movement became a part of the world’s movement of the times. This development was cut by the war. The communist dictatorship (1948-1989) supressed any activities from below, feminist activities included. Women as obligatory “builders of socialism” remained loaded with the duties in the private sphere (family) and thus faced a double burden work. Their “emancipation” was rather doubtful. After 1989, a beginning of a transfer to democracy opened the scene for independent activities, the feminist ones included (NGOs). Some laws supporting equal opportunities were passed but some are waiting for acceptance. In the academy, gender studies emerged for the first time – a separate Master´s department was established at Charles University, Prague. Feminism has been developing as a plural system of thoughts, with the specifics of the Czech historical experiences.

This paper analyzes the war prose by Milica Jankovic and Isidora Sekulic: collections of short stories Unknown Heroes [Neznani junaci] and Waiting [Čekanje], and From the Past [Iz prošlosti]. These collections were written during the wars (1912 –1918) and published shortly after the end of the First World War. The paper points to the social climate and the major ideas that prevailed in the public opinion. The first part of this paper analyzes the war edition of the journal Women [Žena], which is taken as an example magazine with emancipatory feminist tendencies, and the war edition of the Serbian Literary Gazette [Srpski književni glasnik], which is chosen as the main literary magazine of that time. After mapping the concept of war editions of these magazines, this paper analyzes the war prose of selected female authors. It highlights the specific poetics of Milica Janković and Isidora Sekulić, as well as the differences between them.

While the study Female Print and the Culture of Femininity, Женска штампа и култура женствености, published 25 years ago, determined that the printing of heart is the medium of the culture of femininity, which supports the traditional perception of women and female nature, contemporary insights into the themes of this print reveal its emphasized orientation towards consumption as the main theme, and the heroine of this consumption – the shopaholic. Today, in Serbia, two types of print for women are dominant: luxurious, licensed, relatively expensive, low circulation glossy magazines with content dominated by His Majesty the Advertisement, and cheap, popular, sometimes licensed print for women with dominant content of practical and advisory orientation. The increasingly scarce local and traditional woman's magazines of general type are surviving the competition with difficulty

This paper analyzes journal Womаn [Žena], which was launched and edited by Milica Tomić. Contextualization of the editorial policy of the journal shows its emancipatory-enlightening tendency, with special analysis of the role and importance of literary contributions. The aim of this paper is to present the role and the place of literature in the emancipatory process, as well as to show that Womаn [Žena] was a role model for the corps of journals with similar orientations in the history of the press that appeal to women.

This essay explores (various cultural and pedagogical discourses of sexuality and sexual conduct. Those discourses were important for the processes of formation of the national state and its “proper” citizens. The analysis tried to prove that many concepts, ideas and knowledge(s) “travelled” from the Western countries to Serbia, where they were appropriated without any changes. To do this, the author has analysed how category of “race” was utilized in the Serbian “conduct books” and women’s magazines. In conclusion, the author pointed out the significance of historical examination of identities, which should help us form more reflexive and critical attitudes towards cultural heritage and traditions.

Using discourse analysis, this paper examines the female readers’ attitudes towards fashion and clothing which were expressed in their letters published in the journal Women’s world: the organ of Serbian women’s charity associations. The first part of the paper describes the programme and dominant ideology of fashion that was promoted in the journal. That ideology is then compared to opinions and attitudes that are expressed in the letters of female readers. Final analysis observes the connection between fashion and notions of tradition, moral, and emancipation of women

Challenging Education in the Ottoman Greek Female Journals (1845-1907)

The paper’s intention is to present how Ottoman Greek women challenged social inequalities through press, during the Tanzimat period and up to the 1908 Constitutional Reform. The study is based on three journals published in Istanbul, namely Kypseli (1845), Eurydice (1870-1873) and Bosporis (1899-1907), and focused on the journals’ discourses on education inequalities. The debates on women’s education, the argumentation and philosophical platforms provided, illustrate the changing contents of the notions like “equality”, “inequality”, “social injustice” and “female emancipation”. The paper will try to evince the impact of the changing ideologies and political events/circumstances on the changing content of the educational debates and on the declining “feminist” discourse, reflected in the aforementioned journals

Транскултурална личност у покрету или Форме номадизма Милене Павловић Барили

The paper presents the problem of different forms of nomadism of Milena Pavlović Barilli (1909-1945), the painter and poet who created in the interwar period. She circulated between Serbian and Italian, German and French, Spanish and American languages and cultures, enriching her artistic work by the elements of all of them. The first part of the article recalls definitions of nomadism as an intellectual and artistic way of thinking and creating given by Zygmunt Bauman, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari and Rosi Braidotti, the author of the fundamental book Nomadic Subjects. The following parts of the paper introduce the typology of different forms of Pavlović Barilli's nomadism. Six main nomadic forms are suggested and analyzed: her national/ethnic nomadism, her language nomadism, the artistic/esthetic nomadism, the gender nomadism and the cultural one.

Урбанизацијата и македонската жена во XIX век

The urbanisation of the settlements on the territory of Macedonia in the nineteenth century contributed to the development of citizenship. That citizenship became one of the pillars of the development of education, that is, literature, art, construction, etc. In the article we focus on the influence that the town environment had on the Macedonian woman in the XIX century through the bazaar, folk songs and singers, chalgians and troubadours, town clothes versus the village costumes, as well as the gradual suppression of the patriarchal community.

The paper offers an overview of the poems written by the women poets of the old Dubrovnik. It points to the specific social and cultural context which marked their position in Dubrovnik from the 16th till the 18th century and foregrounded certain poetic forms, genres and styles.

The paper analyses the first book of Eustahia Arsić, the first Serbian woman of letters of the modern age. Even though some parts of Sovjet maternij (1814) are addressed exclusively to women readers, her approach is universal and more emancipatory than feminist. The book has a recognizable hybrid structure, well known since Dositej Obradović's autobiography and maintained during the 19th century. Essayistic discourse about the Enlightenment subjects of interest (education and character building in the terms of ideas deriving from Rousseau’s philosophy) is combined with four poems. These poems appear as the standard examples of sentimentalism in Serbian poetry, but they are also early examples of texts formulating the motive of the Supreme Creator eternally present in the course of “life” of nature and universe. In that way, her work appears as the anticipation of the distinctive feature of the Serbian 19th century poetry.

Српкиња брани „Списатељку“

This paper analyzes various apologetic strategies used by Milica Stojadinović, the Serbian woman, in her diary entitled In Fruška Gora in 1854. The paper is focused on the defense discourses which aim at convincing the Serbian public that female authorship is not damaging but beneficial for the national struggle. By presenting herself as a sincere patriot and an exemplary Serbian woman, devoted not only to doing chores and other female duties, but also to writing poetry, reading mythological and philosophical books, translating European literature and collecting Serbian folk poetry and tales, Milica Stojadinović was trying to clear her reputation as an eccentric and false poetess, and to convince the Serbian people in the dignity and the importance of her role as the national poetess. The paper emphasizes her pleads for woman’s right to acquire a thorough education, to chose to become a woman writer, and to express herself in a creative way

This article is an analysis of the first novel written by British author Rebecca West, The Return of the Soldier (1918). Despite the popularity and high appreciation she enjoyed during her lifetime, Rebecca West simply disappeared from the modernist canon. Her first novel has very visible modernist traits, contemporary topic and interesting narration methods, and therefore truly deserves a new reading audience.

First critical writings by Rebecca West appeared in the magazine The Freewoman. A Weekly Feminist Review in the period 1911–1912. Her reviews were mainly focused on the contemporary literature. Criterion which Rebecca West used in order to evaluate literary works and distinguish “good” from “bad” literature was based on her strong feminist stance. First part of the article broadly discussed concepts of literary criticism and feminist literary criticism as well as the complex relationship between amateur and professional criticism at the beginning of the twentieth century. The second part examined Rebecca West’s early critical writings, in order to explore her position in the history of (feminist) literary criticism.
