The article provides a brief summary of the political situation in Guantanamo Bay and the dispute it has generated between the United States of America and Cuba. The Guantanamo Naval Base, referred to as Gitmo by the Anglo-Saxon press, is under US jurisdiction, but located in Cuban territory and operates as a military enclave in Cuba. It works as an island within an island and has been a restrictive factor in the normalisation of bilateral relations. The article gives a brief explanation on Guantanamo Bay’s historical background, highlighting its territorial and geopolitical importance, pointing out the diffi culties the operation of the military base causes, and outlining diverse professional viewpoints about its future. In spite of the Cuban government expecting the Unites States to withdraw their military forces from the territory and return the base fully back to Cuba, the US has no such intentions. Nevertheless some American experts have shared their opinion on how to take advantage of the American military base operating in Cuban territory.

The author of the article tackles the subject of Polish-Ukrainian mixed marriages in Poland. He shows the changes that have taken place concerning the scope of the marital models utilised within the Ukrainian community. He begins his musings looking at the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It comes to light that mixed marriages were at that time a common and accepted phenomenon in small, local communities. The end of openness towards mixed marriages was brought by the “Vistula” Operation, as a result of which historic Ukrainian and Polish-Ukrainian neighbouring communities from south-eastern Poland were destroyed, with the people making them up being resettled in the so-called Recovered Territories. In this new context, Ukrainian communities began to work out new marital models, according to which the aim was to enter into marriages within one’s own group. In order to achieve endogamy on the one hand within Ukrainian families, clear pressure began to arise upon the marital choices of the young, on the other hand, the entire community had worked out a series of strategies aimed at helping to achieve the behaviour patterns expected by the Ukrainian group.

The work discusses the air temperature course of winter periods (December–March) in Poland in the years 1720–2015. The analysis is carried out for area mean values calculated from 5 stations: Szczecin, Wrocław, Warsaw, Wilno and Lwów. The time series of the mean area winter temperature (hereinafter PLZ) consists of combined observational (140 years) and reconstructed (156 years) data. The PLZ reconstruction is based on independent variables, i.e. the values of the maximum area of the Baltic Sea covered with ice in a given ice season and the monthly temperatures in January and March from the Central England Temperature (CET) data set.

The article focuses on Professor’s Pisarek textbook published in 2008. This significant scientific achievement in Pisarek’s academic career remains to this day an essential source of knowledge for researchers and students in the theory of mass communication. The work consists of 15 chapters, a bibliography, two annexes, and an index. It is based on a rich source dataset, namely the 19 page-long bibliography containing more than 500 items. The wide range of topics presented in the textbook shows the most significant trends in media studies. The first, a theoretical perspective of contemporary media theory and the theory of communication is followed by the second, a methodological perspective, given as a description of media research tools and techniques. The third, a historical perspective is used as an explanation of communication phenomena and problems. A clear explanation of the essential concepts of the subject is particularly important for students. Six chapters of the textbook deal with research issues in communication, what is understandable, due to the fact that the author was a long-time director of the Press Research Centre in Krakow. Writing the “Introduction to Communication Studies” Walery Pisarek devoted considerable space to three main links in media communication, namely the sender, the message and the recipient.

This article presents scientific achievements of Walery Pisarek, specialist on language, press, communication in the language of press. There are two perspectives presented in the article: bringing out problematic and methodological innovations considering historical context of selected publications (published as books) and presentation of the scientist’s propositions and bearing capacity. Continuation of themes and methods introduced into science by Walery Pisarek is visible in many books and articles of other researchers. His concepts are used in the way proposed in prototype, but also modified, adjusted to new language and media realties. Inspirations of Walery Pisarek’s works are observed especially in research on such issues ad: structure and form of the title, rhetoric in media, language culture in media, analysis of media content. Author’s textbook to teach communication and dictionary of media terminology edited by Professor are also commonly recalled.

W połowie lat 70. z inspiracji Profesora została uruchomiona specjalizacja dziennikarska w Instytucie Nauk Politycznych UJ, którą kierował do 1985 roku.

W zeszycie 3 (39) 18. tomu Rocznika Historii Prasy Polskiej z 2015 roku opublikowano trzy artykuły i cztery recenzje. Zeszyt otwiera tekst Beaty Opoki pt. „Gazeciarz Stefan Łuskina w satyrze i paszkwilu XVIII w.” Ta forma poezji okolicznościowej rozwinęła się najbardziej w pierwszym i trzecim dziesięcioleciu panowania Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego, w okresie burzliwej walki politycznej, zwłaszcza parlamentarnej. Jak pisze Beata Opoka, „powstawały wówczas utwory wyrażające entuzjazm wywołany uchwałami dotyczącymi stutysięcznej armii, zniesienia Departamentu Wojskowego, a potem Rady Nieustającej; wiersze będące ostrą rozprawą z tzw. partią hetmańską Franciszka Ksawerego Branickiego, czyli prorosyjską opozycją magnacką; utwory współuczestniczące w projekcie reformy rządu; wiersze służące do rozpowszechnienia Ustawy o miastach i Konstytucji 3 Maja 1791 roku.

The author of the article analyses the image of Jewish ghetto in Lodz during the WWII in the light of announcements published and distributed within the ghetto. The analysis covered 322 prints in total, which were distributed between May 1941 and June 1944. During the German occupation the announcements were the basic source of information about the applicable rules and organization of life in the Jewish ghettos in relation to all their dimensions: social, religious, cultural, economic and professional. From this short, formal and official texts the author reconstructs the picture of everyday life of the Jewish community closed in the ghetto. The content of the announcements is not only a valuable source of information about the historical truth of that period, but also an unique case study of the way and scope of communication under such extreme and special conditions like life in the Jewish ghetto in occupied Poland and about the functions that the announcements fulfilled as a medium of public communication.
