Złudzenie symetrii. Na marginesie polskiego tłumaczenia żydowskiej antyewangelii „Toledot Jeszu”

The article was inspired by the introduction to the Polish translation of Toledot Yeshu (by Jan Iluk). The translator suggests that Toledot Yeshu might have been the cause of the Christian anti-Judaism. This is an unjustified opinion, and this paper provides a review of the current state of research on the Christian-Jewish relations in the ancient times and the causes of the negative opinions on Jews being taught in Christian tradition. The author suggests that Toledot Yeshu should be read as a chronicle of the Jewish perspective of the mutual relations between Jews and Christians.

Zmartwychwstanie we wczesnych pismach rabinicznych i tradycji targumicznej

Żydowskie postrzeganie śmierci i zmartwychwstania zmieniało się w ciągu wieków, wywołując dyskusje na te tematy w różnych ugrupowaniach od czasów starożytności. Ważne zmiany miały miejsce w okresie Drugiej Świątyni. Ich świadectwo widać głównie w pismach apokaliptycznych tego okresu. Choć nie należały one do głównego nurtu religii żydowskiej, to jednak miały wpływ na kształtowanie się normatywnego judaizmu. Celem tego artykułu jest przegląd głównych elementów koncepcji śmierci i zmartwychwstania we wczesnych pismach rabinicznych i tekstach targumicznych. Na podstawie współczesnych badań, które zajmują się tymi problemami, zostaną określone zbieżności w postrzeganiu życia po śmierci w obu rodzajach tekstów źródłowych, a jednocześnie podkreślone zróżnicowanie i wielopostaciowość poglądów, które odgrywały ważną rolę w początkach judaizmu.

Motywy wędrówki dusz i dybuka w kulturze żydowskiej i ich współczesna realizacja w twórczości Jony Wolach

This article describes two concepts important for Jewish mysticism – dybbuk and the transmigration of soul, and goes on to present their contemporary usage in the works by Yona Wollach. The concept of the transmigration of souls (in Hebrew: gilgul neshamot) describes a situation whereby the soul of a dead person returns to the this world and occupies a new body. In the case of the dybbuk (in Hebrew: dibuk), on the other hand, the body of a living person, who has his or her own soul, is possessed by the spirit of a dead person. The concepts of reincarnation and dybbuk played an important role not only in religious tradition but also in folklore and popular and high culture. Both became the focus of a number of artworks. The article presents fragments of the poems of the Israeli poet Yona Wollach (1944–1985), in which she describes psychological states similar to transmigration of souls and being captured by a dybbuk. The article aims to show that these poetic images are in close connection with Wollach`s concept of the human psyche.

The essential difference between ancient versions of the Flood (including the biblical Noah account) is whether mankind brought the cataclysm on itself through immoral behaviour. In a second disaster story of the Tower of Babel, misuse of technology was responsible for the Tower’s failure. Both of these narratives may be represented on a unique Babylonian mappa mundi, which might also show the topography of biblical Eden.

Alexandra Gorlina kabalistyczne refleksje nad sztuką i literaturą

This article is an attempt to critically analyze Alexander Gorlin’s book "Kabbalah in Art and Architecture" in the context of contemporary research on Jewish mysticism, magic and the Kabbalah. These issues have become a subject of interest for many researchers, which has given rise to numerous international conferences, professional and academic publications, and substantive debates in academic circles. However, Gorlin’s book faces questions in terms of whether the author’s suggestive and subjective pairing of works of art and architecture with passages from Kabbalistic texts represents an attempt to inscribe them within this academic context, or whether it merely represents a casual nod to a non-reflective reader.

„Wojna u bram” Szełomo ben Aharona z Poswola (polski przekład „Wstępu”)

The article presents a Polish translation of the Introduction to War at the Gates (hebr. לחם שערים) Shelomo ben Aharon of Poswol, a Karaite learned man and cleric from the late 17th and early 18th century, better known as the author of a text entitled Uczynił sobie lektykę (Hebr. אפריון עשה לו). The author of the article briefly described the whole text (presenting a Karaite halakha in respect of the differences compared to the Rabbinic halakha – this is the main part of the work, written in the responsa style), rather than the poetic Introduction alone, although this is the part that received an in-depth analysis. In addition to that, the article contains a brief biographic and intellectual portrayal of the author of both these treatises.

Szamgar, syn Anata, w „Dawnych Dziejach Izraela” Józefa Flawiusza

Although Shamgar is described as deliverer of Israel in Judg 3:31, all the regular elements in the description of the work of Israel’s judges seems to be lacking there (for example, the official titles שפט or מושיע ). In this context the tradition of Josephus (Antiquities 5:197) is instructive here: Σανάγαρος ὁ Ἀνάθου παῖς αἱρεθεὶς ἄρχειν ἐν τῷ πρώτῳ τῆς ἀρχῆς ἔτει κατέστρεψε τὸν βίον (“Sanagaros, the Anath’s son, having been chosen to rule, in the first year of his rule lost his life”). If Josephus’ biblical source was basically the same as the Masoretic Text, he seems to understood the lexeme הבקר of Judg 3:31 as a passive verbal form from the root בקר , in the sense attested in the Qumran scrolls, where the term מבקר means “supervisor, inspector.” Therefore, although the standard formula of assuming the rule is missing there, the consonantal Hebrew text permits one to recognize Shamgar as chief and deliverer of Israelites. He “has been appointed” ( הבֻקְַר ) to be a “supervisor, chief ” (compare αἱρεθεὶς ἄρχειν in Josephus) of Israel.

Masora Biblii hebrajskiej – wprowadzenie w tematykę

Masorah (oral and written tradition of transmitting the Bible text) is an important library of information about Sacred Scripture on the stage of its formation. It provides informations without which it is difficult and sometimes impossible to read or interpret correctly the biblical text. One of the barriers involved studying the Masorah of the Hebrew Bible is the lack od introductory literature on the subject, especially on the field of polish language. Here we can not find any comprehensive and useful study for the Masorah, including exercises and examples how to read and take advantage of Masorah. Since the system of Masoretic notes is very carefully printed in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, and even more in Biblia Hebraica Quinta, we require such a study of masoretic notes’ system in Polish biblical studies. This article is an announcement of such an elaboration.

Implikacje dialogu – studium na temat spotkania Jetro i Mojżesza

The pericope concerning the meeting of Moses and Jethro (Ex 18, 1–27) provides a number of interesting conclusions about the nature of the interreligious dialogue. Using biblical exegesis, literary analysis, as well as with the comments of Jewish rabbis, the article takes on the task to further examine the nature and consequences of the dialogue. While recognizing the meeting of the Midianite priest and Moses as a “moment of dialog”, the importance of the exchange of gifts in the process of dialogue has been particularly stressed. To make this dialogue possible, Jethro first heard and traveled to the desert, and in turn, Moses stood out in front of his father-in-law and told what God made with Israel.

Przywódca-budowniczy sanktuarium Izraela według narracji starotestamentalnej

Many books of the Old Testament deal with the theme of human building activity. Among Old Testament narratives it is possible to distinguish the special ones which present a special kind of activity undertaken as a result of divine inspiration addressed to the leader of the Israel community. This way the leader becomes the leader-builder of Israel’s sanctuary (Herod the Great is omitted here because he is not mentioned in the text of the Old Testament). One can specify a few special attributes of the leaderbuilder of the sanctuary: the obedience and the trust in God, the piety, the prudence, the solicitude, the authority and the courage. The essential goal of the analysis in this paper is to expose those attributes.

Troska Boga o słabych i uciśnionych w świetle Ez 34, 16

In all polish translations of Ez 34, 16 there appears a statement about God’s „watching over” (šmr) of fat and strong sheep. This rendering derives not from masoretic text but from tradition (LXX, Vulgate, Jakub Wujek Bible). But is this rendering justified? This article attempts to convince that we should stay with hebrew šmd (“to destroy”).

Imigranci żydowscy w Polsce: aspekt religijny, narodowy i polityczny

The Authoress points out that over the XIV-XX centuries we may talk about a few waves of the Jewish immigrants in Poland. The first Jewish people showed up in our territory 1000 years ago. In the beginning of the XIV century, as few as from several hundred up to a thousand of the Jewish people lived in Poland. We may talk about a considerable wave of immigrants only beginning with the second half of the XIV century when in the years 1343-1353 during the Great Plague, the Jewish people were accused of poisoning the wells in Germany and in the life-threatening situation, they moved on to Poland. The life area in Europe was shrinking drastically for the Jewish people in the XIV century and the only destination where they could escape from persecution was Poland. On the one hand the economic and legal conditionalities in Poland in the XIV century and on the other the Jewish persecution in almost every European country brought about the huge Jewish emigration to Poland in the XIV century which continued throughout the consecutive centuries. In her article the Authoress elaborates upon the religious, national and political aspect of this immigration.

Przesłanie „Pieśni pochwalnej" na cześć Judy Machabeusza (1Mch 3,3-9)

“The Song of praise” in honor of Judas Maccabeus is one of the poetic fragments of 1 Macc. As shown by exegetes, the original version of the song was created in Hebrew, therefore one can perceive characteristic features of Hebrew poetry in it. Looking at the message of the song,the author of the song – praising the person and deeds of Judas Maccabeus – shows him as the savior of Israel sent by God, who fought in defense of the Law, the covenant and the Jewish people. The final result of actions taken by Judas was reversal of God’s wrath from the Jewish community (1 Macc 3:8). As emphasized by the author of the song, Judas Maccabeus covered his name with glory, which “resounded to the ends of the earth” (1 Macc 3:9), and “extended the fame of his people” (1 Macc 3:3).

Homila (neo)apologetyczna, jako współczesna forma przepowiadania

The paper presents one of the contemporary methods of homily preaching, referred to as neoapologetic. Based on truth, it is meant to aim at the Truth, which is the Triune God. This will happen through the preacher's faith and reason, which will allow each listener to decide on accepting the Truth in full freedom, as well as through apologetic, understood as committed testimony of a herald of the Gospel.

Au-delà des mères perdues ou comment nommer la mère après la Shoah

This article focuses on the relationship between mothers and daughters in the French literature, taking as its starting point the Holocaust as it was experienced by these two authors, Sarah Kofman and Esther Orner. For most Holocaust survivors, this is, at first, to find the words to break the silence, find the words to describe the indescribable and, therefore, with writing, these two writers try to recover the time spent, the one where as children they had had a mother to love. Mothers lost in the pain of separation that would give them a new life, another mother. So what to call these mothers lost when another mother had cradled in her womb? Through the writing of Sarah Kofman and Esther Orner, we make this journey against time.
