A review of the text of the Psalter of St. Florian indicates the necessity for a revision of S. Rospond's theory of the obvious Mazovian features of the second and third copyists. It occurs that the second copyist certainly did not exhibit any Mazovian features while nothing certain can be said of the third one. Such conclusion seems to confirm another theory by S. Respond according to which there existed a Great-Polish original manuscript of the Psalter.

The first part of the paper deals with the contribution of Oleg Nikolaevich Trubachov to ethnolinguistics, onomastics and etymology. This Russian scholar is perceived as the most distinguished academic in the field of Slavic studies of his time. The second part elaborates on Trubachov's etymology of the toponym Vrbas, which started its existence as an ethnotoponym, then hydronym, and which is now interpreted as a consonant base in n in the plural locative without prepositions which undergoes toponymization in the second instance.

Like every branch of science, the study of names (onomastics) has to classify the objects it investigates. In the case of the classification of place names it has to be distinguished between those derived from proper names and from appellatives (common names), which are divided further according to morphemic structures and the associated derivational morphemes into five sub-classes. In addition, place names from other name classes, as well as unclarified place names have to be taken into account. In total there are 7 sub-classes with 21 types of place names. In the case of the classification of proper names, more exactly of surnames, distinctions are made on a genetic level between surnames from proper names, that is to say from Slavonic forenames, from German forenames and baptismal names, as well as from appellatives of Slavic and non-Slavic origin, whereby the de-appellatives are presented in an additional semantic sub-classification. The surnames are divided into types and subtypes according to the suffixes used on the morphemic level. Similar to place names, tribal names are divided into those derived from proper names and those derived from appellatives. Further differentiation ensues according to the structure of morphemes, as well as according to the suffixes used in this process. The regional names are distinguished from tribal names in the narrow sense.

Povratnost kao imenička kategorija: slučaj poljskih povratnih imenica

This study deals with »reflexive nouns« in Polish, i.e. deverbal nouns which retain the reflexive marker się in the process of nominalization. We compare syntactic and semantic features of reflexive verbs with their noun counterparts and examine specific properties of each subgroup with usage–based data from the Polish Web corpus 2012. The study shows that certain properties of different subgroups of reflexive verbs are transferred to reflexive nouns, but also points to some specificities and differences of this category, as well as differences between Polish and other Slavic languages in the expression of reflexivity as a nominal category.

Początki Instytutu Kultury Polskiej im. Attilia Begey’a oczami Polaków i Włochów

The article focuses on the Attilio Begey Institute of Polish Culture which was created in Turin in 1930, after the death of Attilio Begey in 1928, due to the initiative of Roman Pollak and with Italian and Polish governmental support, as well as with the voluntary help of Italian Polonists. After a few years, the institution became one of the best-performing pro-Polish organizations in Italy. In the article, I point out the Polish and Italian opinions about the activities of this pro-Polish phenomenon in the capital of Piedmont in the first years of its existence.

L’essere umano esiste in notevole misura attraverso il linguaggio. Il personaggio pubblico esiste attraverso il proprio linguaggio pubblico. Lech Wałęsa è una persona pubblica. I suoi discorsi vengono sottoposti ad analisi e interpretazioni, vengono deformati ed estrapolati dal contesto, vengono citati e utilizzati come parole d’ordine. I discorsi di una persona pubblica diventano da questa indipendenti e formano la sua immagine. Non si può dire neppure se si tratta di un’immagine vera o falsa. È con l’immagine e non con la persona che noi abbiamo a che fare.

Milosz all'ombra dell'Impero

Nella cultura polacca esiste una certa unilateralità nel trattare il tema dell'impero. Ne ha scritto Czestaw Mitosz e, come d'abitudine, ne ha scritto in modo non univoco. Eppure, nel vocabolario polacco, il termine "Impero" ha un significato del tutto univoco e solo negativo. Mitosz vi ha aggiunto ulteriori accezioni. In apertura a queste mie considerazioni propongo una lirica di Mitosz della fine degli anni '70, dalla quale ho tratto il titolo di questo lavoro.

Sposoby identyfikacji Żydów białostockich w świetle spisów ludności z lat 1799–1853 (okres zaboru rosyjskiego)

The purpose of this study is to draw attention for the need to supplement the existing researches of anthroponymy of the Jewish community in Bialystok in the first part of the 19th century (the period of Russian partitions). A sociological-linguistic analysis these anthroponyms should be made. It is possible because we can use new sources – names lists of inhabitans of Bialystok in years 1799–1853. These sources contain a great wealth of Jewish anthroponyms. The oldest nineteenth-century sources show the process of formation of surnames of Bialystok Jews. Surnames were imposed on Jews by the authorities of the Russian Empire. The lexical base of Białystok Jews’ surnames were Slavic languages, mainly Polish and Russian, German, Yiddish and Hebrew. The patterns of the countries of settlement were used to form surnames (Polish, Russian, German). What distinguishes the Jewish anthroponymy in the research area were the artificial surnames. Because of womens’ social rank female surnames enclosed in the registers are not very common.

Rutenizmy w staropolskiej terminologii religijnej (na przykładzie Słownika staropolskiej terminologii chrześcijańskiej Marii Karpluk)

Religious terminology in the Polish language is an interesting topic and constantly requires academic research. Linguists have reached a certain consensus that the oldest Polish Christian lexicon to a large extent was borrowed from the Czech language along with the spread of Christianity from that area. This article addresses the issue of Polish religious terminology that could have Eastern Slavic origins. They were taken from Maria Karpluk’s graphic lexicon entitled A Dictionary of Old Polish Christian Terminology (Słownik staropolskiej terminologii chrześcijańskiej) and were analyzed in terms of semantics and etymology. The analysed lexicon particularly relates to the spirituality of the Orthodox Church that originates from areas where Orthodoxy was the dominant religion. Some of the words, e.g. przeczysta (compare Przeczysta Panna), kum, zapusty have survived and are present in contemporary Polish, while others such as porąganie, pomiłować, soroczyny, pokaźń gradually disappeared. Some Old Polish religious terms of Eastern Slavic origin such as Bogorodzica, kryłos, monaster, Spas, władyka, wwiedienie are used today in both in oral and written forms in the Orthodox community in Poland.

Lingua materna, Lingua receptiva, Lingua franca, Multilingual franca? The linguascape of the Polish-Czech borderland from the perspective of sustainable multilingualism

As statistical surveys show, both Poland and the neighbouring Czech Republic are single-ethnic and highly monolingual countries. The observation of the linguistic landscape of the Polish-Czech borderland suggests, however, that the display of common natural heritage is conducive to weakening monolingualism and the development of multilingual practices instead. The hypothesis is being checked in a comparative analysis of the linguistic landscape of two picturesque locations - Czech Adršpach and Polish Karłów where a lot of natural sights in the form of rocks can be found. The case study proves that different languages and communication modes are used to describe these attractions: lingua materna, lingua receptiva, and global or regional lingua franca. The research material includes 211 signs photographed in the Rock City in Adršpach and 283 signs photographed at local tourist attractions near Karłów, namely, on the Szczeliniec Wielki mountain peak and in the Błędne Skały area. The analysis covers both the language hierarchy as well as the specific multilingual character of information signs which refer mainly to the rock objects. The selected photographs are presented in the paper in the attempt to illustrate the particular linguistic practices in examples. The research is based on the assumption of applied ecolinguistics that the diversity of languages should be maintained through appropriate language policy and other activities supporting the preservation of the linguistic and natural heritage. This perspective might shed a new light on the moment of transition from the monolingual paradigm to more open and sustainable multilingual practices in the linguistic landscape of Polish-Czech borderland.
