This article is based on the analysis of semantic, syntactic and stylistic characteristics of synecdoche in Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina, in Serbian and its translation into French. This is a lexeme-based study where parts of the body are used to represent the whole through the synecdochic process, sometimes metonymic. The aim of this article is to prove that by using a part of the body (with a precise motivation) the author refers to its whole, which leads to a wider view of reality. The obtained results from the contrastive and descriptive analysis have to demonstrate that synecdoche is an independent figure of speech, that the mechanisms of its formation are similar in these languages, but opposed to the metonymic processes, and that the change of the synecdoche form in the context of translation influences the stylistic effect of the text.

This paper deals with the process in which a collection of oral legends found on the terrain of the Belica locality was created. Its objective is to get an insight into the terrain which would include a geographical and cultural aspect as well as up-to-date records of the transmissions. This position creates an explanatory start- ing point for the need to repeat and expand the research in a way in which different theoretical and methodological assumptions can be appreciated. The presentation of the collection relates to the pre-terrain, terrain and post-terrain stages, and it focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of the research procedures that have been ap- plied so far. The material collected will be classified and described in line with the classifications adopted in folkloristics. Moreover, an attempt will be made to point out the possibilities for some future research, not only of this terrain, but also of legends in general. The fluidity of the borders of genres and the difficulties arising from the attempts at definition and classification are the issues that even impose a need for a contemporary researcher to look for different new approaches. This paper indicates the selected aspects of study that open up in a dialogue with the existing paradigms in contemporary humanistic sciences. Accordingly, the research tends to observe the oral legends originating in the Belica terrain through the lens of the theories of nar- ratology and imagology with the aim to reveal the material in a different spectrum of concepts that could affirm the existing scientific assumptions or possibly point to the new approaches in understanding this folklore genre.

The paper aims to determine the role of synesthetic metaphor in Serbian youth literature. The analysis has been conducted on contemporary Serbian prose and poetry for youth. The approach of the research is qualitative-stylistic, while the primary method used in the study is the linguistic-stylistic one. The focus is on the morphological and semantic analyses of synesthetic metaphor. Synesthetic metaphor is represented as a special linguo-stylistic category that is evaluated primarily from the point of view of the purpose of synesthetic transference. The synesthetic meta- phor, as any other kind of metaphor, communicates complex images and feelings to young readers. It sharpens one’s imagination, represents a specific way of thinking and appeals directly to the senses of young readers.

The paper examines the poetic transformation of spatial expressions in the poetry collection Drowned Souls by Vladislav Petković Dis. The basis for the analysis was the structuralist point of view that a poetry collection is a unique artistic sign of which spatial expressions represent an integral part. We assumed that the choice and the modification of spatial expressions are determined by the specific perception of space, influenced both by the poetics of the epoch (the view that life is a fall, present in the Serbian poetry before World War I) and the view of life held by the poet himself.

The number of books, papers, articles, reports on Yugoslavia, former Yugoslavia, ex-Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia, Montenegro, Serbian republics in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, not to mention Slovenia and Croatia, grows and grows. I too have added to that growing field. Still, understanding seems to be diminishing rather than growing. Why? There are, I think, three reasons. I shall discuss them in a somewhat balkanized way because that approach may further comprehension. [...]

In the teaching of Serbian as foreign language, spelling is taught at the elementary and middle level of knowledge, so that a student at an advanced level is able to use all spelling rules. The topic of this work is spelling materials in printed textbooks of Serbian as foreign language at an advanced level. Textbooks used in this work are printed during the 21st century, so later ones. The goal is to check and present spelling contents in textbooks for the students who study Serbian as a foreign language at an advanced level, as well as to get recommendations for the authors of future textbooks. It can be expected that: a) in university textbooks for advanced level there are activities to systematize knowledge acquired at an elementary and intermediate level, as well as compound tasks which combine more spelling rules; b) spelling contents in the textbooks for special courses are methodologically constructed in order to contribute undertoning and expanding of particular parts of knowledge. The analysis has shown that the latest textbook production pays attention to spell- ing and gives direction for the future authors. It can be inferred that: a) due to the lack of spelling instructions for foreigners only, it is necessary to introduce spelling exercises in textbooks (in accordance with textbook conception); b) in activities intended for improving ortography competence, spelling rules should be related to other competences.

In this paper, the componential analysis of the English and Serbian groups of synonyms of the verb stare has been conducted. The main aims of the research are the representation of the groups of synonyms of the verb stare, as well as the emphasis of the diagnostic characteristics on which the examined verbs differ. Eventually, the suggested translations of the verbs have been studied. The main conclusion is that the Serbian language contains fewer verbs belonging to this semantic field. For that reason, most of the synonyms have been defined by a semantically neutral verb (e.g. look) modified by an appropriate adverb or a compound adjective. What is more, the results show that the consulted dictionaries and corpora provide detailed and complete information on this subject.

Inclusion of others’ words into authorial discourse is actually the trans- mission of someone else’s speech. Forms of the journalistic style of writing are used in order for transmission of other people’s speech to have the same expressive value as to readers of newspaper media. In the introductory part we present the impor- tance and role of journalistic style of writing in transferring someone else’s speech into newspapers. The paper also discusses two grammaticalized types of conveying another’s speech - direct and indirect - from daily newspapers published in the Re- public of Serbia. We will pay attention to the examples taken from the texts that are an integral part of the daily newspapers which we have divided into two large groups, depending on whether they belong to the model of direct or indirect speech and what their fuction is in a given context.
