The main purpose of this paper was to explore the area of continuing professional development for foreign language teachers, with a particular focus on the educational system in Montenegro. We briefly discussed the reasons for this kind of teacher education, and then we put a particular stress on research. The target group for the survey were in-service foreign language teachers, teaching in Montenegrin primary, elementary, secondary and high schools. The survey aimed not only to show the present situation in the area of continuing professional development for foreign language teachers in Montenegro, but also to help us identify the needs and give a possible projection of perspectives in the Montenegrin educational system, when foreign language teacher education is concerned.

Bearing in mind various grammar books and some research papers which rely on grammar, the logical subject in a sentence is erroneously defined, which prevents students to show better results in contests. We decided to show the logical subject in a clear form and its interpretation in different grammar books. Of course, we also made a comment on the nature of those mistakes and their misinterpretation of the logical subject.

This paper analyses the presence of lexemes relating to vineyards in a local dialect dictionary Rečnik srpskih govora Vojvodine (Dictionary of Vernacular Serbian in Vojvodina) with special emphasis on the classification of recorded lexemes into specific semantic gropus and, within them, into adequate semantic subgroups. In order to check standard lexemes Rečnik Matice srpske (Matica srpska Dictionary) was used for reference.

The paper focused on the linguistic analysis of two American feature films and on what they could confirm in the sociohistorical and cultural senses of the word. Those are the films Behind Enemy Lines (2001) and The Hunting Party (2007), which were distributed worldwide, and broadcast on various TV stations and their channels. The paper offers an analysis of modest film sections in Serb language, more precisely – in the language here selected to represent “Serbian“, in the way its speakers (actors) were instructed to represent the Serbs. Linguistic analysis indicates that the language represented in these films has served the purpose of the already habitual policy of the West towards the Serbs and the Serb language. Following its own geopolitical interests in the Balkans, that policy has always tended to minimise the Serb ethnic and linguistic area and limit it to Serbia, more precisely, to its central parts. Therefore the language of the actors playing Serbs in these Bosnian film stories was organised in such a way that they linguistically (ekavisms, da + present construction, etc.) and in every other sense represent newcomers, more exactly – the aggressors coming from Serbia, and not the Bosnia-Herzegovinian Serbs who have lived in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the first Serb settlements appeared in the Balkans.

In this paper, we discuss the congenital physical anomaly polydactyly (‘extra digit’ ‘sixth finger’), from an ethnolinguistical and cultural standpoint, as a root for surnames: (a) Altiparmak(ović) – of Oriental – and (b) Šestinović – of Slavic origin. According to the motivation of origin, surnames of this type belong in the productive group – What are you like? Polydactyly is a physical anomaly of supernumerary underdeveloped bones from which supernumerary joints or entire fingers emerge. For surnames with Oriental origin, in the form of phrase alti parmak (‘sixth finger’), with a clear motivation and transparent etymology, the knowledge of their literal meaning has now been lost in Serbian language. Surnames like Šestić and Šestinović can have as their root the phrase ”šesti prst” (sixth finger), from the nickname Šesto/Šesta (more common); but also ”the sixth child“ (less frequent).

In the first part of the paper the author provides an overview of researh regarding Ruthenian / Rusyn youth speech. The English language has caused several innovations in the speech of young Ruthenians / Rusyns of Serbia. They can be seen at all levels. It is a well-known fact that modern languages today borrow extensively from English and consequently their lexicons are swarming with anglicisms in all thematic registers (especially in the register of computing, for ex. рестартовац компютер, конектовац ше на веб, зиповац файл). A morphological analysis of the English element in the MAK provides us with a basis for emphasizing a certain quantitive and stimulative influence of English on the occurence of indeclinability of nouns in the adjectival function in compounds consisting of two independently used bases. This is, however, a productive characteristic which might cause a change in the morphological and syntactic system of the Ruthenian language (for ex. Kulpin Fest, Vojvodina Calling, Headroom студиo).

This paper analyses German leben-containing idioms and their Serbian counterparts. With regard to the similarities and differences found, we can define four groups of them, in accordance with four degrees of equivalence: full equivalence, partial equivalence, semantic equivalence, and zero equivalence ones respectively.

This paper presents a phonologic description of the Derventa speeches with accents distribution, distribution of vowel lengths, with position after an accented syllable in some word categories, and specifi c stress transfer to the proclitic. The results indicate that all of the pupils conserve vowel lengths, with position after an accented syllable, while in the eastern Serbian speeches the tendency of losing these lengths has taken root. It is noticeable that stress transfer to the proclitic is not as frequent as in the western Serbian speeches. Registered accentual doublets are quite common in many western speeches.

Parallel with the emergence of new language structures, new models of language descriptions have developed as well. One of the most attractive theoretical models of language description in the last few decades is construction grammar. Construction grammar is not a single theory, but a variety of similar theories, which share the assumption that human language at all linguistic levels consists of signs. These signs represent the unity of form and meaning and are named “constructions”. Trends in linguistics in developed language systems very often enter less developed language systems, conditionally speaking, and also quite late, due to language barriers. Since construction grammar is a relatively new grammatical theoretical model, the aim of this paper is to help linguists in Bosnia and Herzegovina to get to know some of the basic features of this model based on the most quoted works in German and English linguistics.

The modern methods of teaching Croatian as a second or a foreign language are focused mainly on the communicational approach to learning. The communicational approach in teaching foreign languages sets the students and their needs at the centre of the teaching process. The lexical approach is becoming the focus of the teaching process and language learning is shifted from the traditional conception of language as a set of grammatical rules to the assumption that language consists of lexical components or multi-member lexical units that can be adopted as one word. Collocations occupy a central place among these lexical circuits. It is very important to recognize them and to utilize their potential in the development of all communication competence in teaching Croatian as a second or a foreign language. This paper defines collocations as extremely important lexical units in foreign language learning and explains the most common structural type of bonds within the collocations through a list of collocations collected in three textbooks for the Croatian language learning.

This paper gives a critical description of the indirect object in English and Croatian. Grammatical relationships between verb and object are described with the aim of determining the similarities and differences in verb complementation between English and Croatian. Difficulties related to the classification of Croatian verbs that take an indirect object are also discussed. Analysis of English ditransitive complementation is presented since it is related to the description and characterization of direct and indirect objects, thus drawing attention to complex relationship between semantic and syntactic functions in a sentence. The paper deals with the semantics of the object, which usually refers to the relationship between predicate and object, in the sense that a nominal phrase which has the morphosyntactic features of an object can have different semantic roles. It also presents a conceptual characterization of basic grammatical functions within the framework of Cognitive Grammar, which tries to capture universal aspects of language structures. The paper aids comprehension of both object and sentence structure, and it shows that relations between the verb and its complements can be explored on a conceptual level of analysis.

The pronoun form tko today is often considered to be a feature of only the Croatian language and one of the differences between the Bosnian and Croatian language. This paper shows that this is not true and that the pronoun form tko belongs to the Bosnian language, not only Croatian, and that it is represented in some grammars, dictionaries and handbooks of orthography of the Bosnian language, but also in modern local speeches of the ijekavian-šćakavian dialect.

This paper deals with the particle schon in the German language in the context of its semantic and syntactic features, as well as its translation equivalents in the Bosnian/ Croatian/Serbian language. The paper also discusses the nature and function of particles in general in the German language based on the prevailing attitudes in the relevant reference books. Theoretical assumptions have been used to conduct an analysis of the use of the particle schon on current examples from the German language, taken from the newspaper Spiegel. The analysis showed specific semantic subtleties, especially when it comes to its translation equivalents, as well as other characteristics which are manifested primarily in an atypical syntactic distribution.

This paper examines the way high school students in Bosnia and Herzegovina use and express the speech act of apology in both, Bosnian and the English language. The data is collected through Discourse Completion Tests (DCTs) from 80 high school students (43 Male and 37 Female). Gender, formal/ informal setting, and status variables were examined. The findings show that each variable to a certain extent affects the process of communication and that there are not strictly set rules which govern the communication process. The traditional role of gender is challenged and there is a need for further investigation in the field.
