Between the eleventh and the fourteenth centuries the economy of Latin Christianity went through fundamental and rapid transformations. Obviously, there is a scholarly debate on the direction and the speed of economic development; but some points are clear enough. The population increased, urban centres supported social mobility and there was a massive coinage, too. At a time when feudal society still flourished, there was a concomitant development of basic structures of pre-industrial society, most of which originated around 1300, so that many towns retained their appearance until the nineteenth century. While feudal tenure was still widespread, it appears that in Europe by 1300, such tenures were becoming more like private property.

The article „Christian Seneca“ and „Christian Cicero“ – Two Views into Latin Apologetics describes, the reasons why two Latin ecclesiastical writers , Minucius Felix and Lactantius, were titled „Christian Seneca“ (Minucius) and „Christian Cicero“ (Lactantius) by humanists of the Rennaisance time. In Minucius the affinity of Seneca is based on the stoic character of his apologetic dialogue Octavius, whereas Lactantius is similar to Cicero in his literary style. In many aspects, however, Minucius can be compared also to Cicero and Lactantius with Seneca. Both authors aim to show Christianity as philosophy sui generis, which is not an antithesis of ancienit pagan culture, but on the very contrary, its completion.

This study deals with some aspects in the process of personal development of French biblical scholar and priest Alfred Loisy (1857–1940), especially from the entry of his books into the Index of Forbidden Books to his excommunication in 1908. It focuses on the dynamics and character of the conflict between Loisy and the church representatives and on the theme of his religious faith or infidelity (atheism). It discusses the main motives for the dispute between Loisy and the conservative ecclesiastical circles in France and at the Roman Curia, which was mainly related to the image of the Church and the way in which power was exercised in it.

Joy is an important element in all of Paul’s letters. This article analyzes the theme of joy in First Thessalonians and the contribution it makes to the theme of joy in Christian life. The terminology of joy (the noun χαρά and the verb χαίρω) occurs six times in this letter. The article exegetes each of these instances and in their immediate context. The exegesis shows the following inherent characteristics of joy as found in this epistle: joy originates from the Holy Spirit and it has a complex shape – it is the joy of the word of God together with its reception and action; it is the joy of faith, conversion, and a new way of life. It is also joy in spite of many tribulations and suffering. Last but not least, this joy is a part of God´s will, and on that account Paul encourages his readers to perserve in joy.

The purpose of this article is to reflect on the biblical concept of covenant in the context of a care for planet earth. The paper first introduces briefly the content of the Old Testament berít, discusses Adam’s task of cultivating and guarding the Garden of Eden, emphasizes the importance of viewing the environment as a “gift”, and reflects on the implications of this perspective for each of us. Referring to Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’, the study stresses the need for ecological conversion. It mentions St. Francis of Assisi and his profound perception of the world as a common home in which all living creatures have a place and in which the Holy Trinity is mysteriously present. The New Covenant is given over to reflections on the relationship between ecology and the Eucharist, as once presented by Ioannis Zizioulas. We believe that Orthodoxy is a precious source of inspiration for the issue of environmental protection, not only for the Orthodox and the Catholics, but also for all people of good will who are open to Christian values.

Since in the last decades, especially after the year 2000, we witnessed an explosion of the digital phenomenon in Romania, the statistics on the use of modern communication and information media tend to show an obvious over-saturation. As Christian paradigms center on the idea of the community of faith and communion of believers, the subject becomes topical for the Church. Thus, we decided to take a step forward towards studying the challenges that modern Christians face, especially in the context of the new digital communication technologies. We tried to argue our material using sociological and scientific research related to both our country profile and the European and global route we are following. Analyzing the situation from this perspective, we find that the upheavals of the last decades, as they result from the development of science, have an immediate impact on behavioral patterns, both at the level of the person and the community, but also on the cultural patterns. We have the belief that the responsibility of the Church is to leave a legacy that consists of believers with lives deeply anchored in the Christian Tradition for centuries, but who are also in need of adapting to an era that is in a more than obvious continuous change.

The effects of our thoughts is reflected in our behavior that is marked by instincts, teachings, experiences or the social-cultural group. The postmodernism open a new perspectives upon different types of relation between State and Church, about relation between absolute Truth and different views about interpretation of it. The postmodernism give a unique chance for free expression in what you think, say or do. Freedom of your own interpretation of personal experiences, represent your fundament of entire list of deeds. The absolute Truth is not any longer like a base for objective analyze of bad or wrong acts, only your personal interpretation is enough to define this actions. The postmodernism open the door for a long list of new terms that shown by the liberty of free expression without any barriers between cultures, classes or religion but in same way show by the sacrifice of truth for the wish of reinterpretation of it.

The Tension between Human Freedom, Morality and Reason from a Biblical Perspective. In this article we will talk about the tension between human freedom, morality and the interpretation of Scripture. The subject is important, it is recognized that the text of the Bible made humanity aware of the human values promoted in modern civilization: human freedom, human rights, division of powers in the state, gender equality, freedom of expression, etc. We will show that the paradigm shift in the interpretation of the biblical text, from modernity and postmodernity, influenced the understanding of individual freedoms and human values. In postmodernism there has been a deep crisis in the understanding of Christian moral values. Deconstructivism has influenced most areas of life. There is a tension between individual and moral freedom. We admit that the rules of moral behavior are seen as a limitation of human freedom. We will analyze the factors that contributed to the emergence of the moral crisis in Western society, and which subsequently led to a change in the way human freedoms were developed. We will refer to Alasdair MacIntyre’s book, entitled „Three Rival Versions of Moral Inquiry (1990),” which presents: the Method of Tradition, the Method of Reason - from the Modern period, and the Method of Power - of the imposition of force - from the Postmodern period. We will argue that the method of tradition both in the moral field and in the interpretation of Scripture remains the respective interpretation. There will be presented the shortcomings of the rationalist method and the postmodern method. We support the method of tradition to be correct, showing that reason thinks properly when it does not seek to be neutral or disinterested, but participates in a certain community, through total commitment. Regarding the claim of the biblical text as being revealed, we will remember Rudolf Otto (Sacred) and Mircea Eliade, who uses the term hierophany. We will challenge the effort to change the traditional method of interpreting the biblical text, which has governed traditional biblical interpretation for 3,500 years, and replace it with questionable methods that attempt to ignore the historicity of the text and the authority of the Bible. Based on the analysis done, we consider that a balance can be kept between reason, freedom of the individual and the morality prescribed by the biblical text supported in the Christian tradition.

Jürgen Moltmann’s reflections about joy are extremely valuable in the troubled context of contemporary culture, a culture that is undergoing a powerful crisis that threatens its stability. Through the theology he expounds in his interview with Mirosalv Volf, we can deduce important principles related to overcoming them by finding sustainable solutions. The aim of this paper is to address this secondary but important theme in Jürgen Moltmann’s philosophy and to understand the moral principles that can help today’s society to live a flourishing life. First, I will describe how, in his life experience, Moltmann outlines the theology of joy. He experiences the profound ideological crisis that was born and led to the outbreak of World War II. Secondly, I will analyse the main landmarks of the theology of joy as Moltmann understands it, and in the final part I will extract some principles necessary for overcoming moments of individual or collective crisis.
