The article is focused on the analysis of the relationship between socio-economic status of the family and the quality of life of the child. The sixth-graders living in Lodz from the schools selected on the basis of the share of pupils getting feemeals were respondents of the auditorium questionnaire. Conducted statistical analysis show the disadvantaged position of children brought up in the low status families. In all crucial spheres of life of a child taken into account in the research: living conditions, family relationships, peer relationships, school, health, and subjective well-being, we can argue that children from above mentioned category experience lower level of the quality of life than their better off peers. Furthermore, the level of global quality of life differs substantially between groups selected with regard to SES of the family of the respondent.

The aim of the article was to investigate the early school leaving phenomenon on the basis of the survey sample of 3157 students of basic vocational and upper secondary schools in Poland (located in urban areas in Warsaw, Lublin and Chełm), surveyed in 2014. The main focus has been on the correlation between students’ social support – as an indicator of social capital – and their plans for the future, in particular the respondents’ desire to continue formal, full-time education. The multivariate regression analyses conducted confirm the existence of a correlation between the respondents’ desire to leave formal education before completing upper secondary school and the perceived level of social support. However, in the case of perceived parental and teachers’ support, the correlation appears to be weak. The most important category of significant others is constituted by friends/peers.

The aim of this publication is to discuss the current state of sexuality education in Poland, officially referred to as “preparation for family life”. Its core curriculum is based on maintaining sexual abstinence, preferably until marriage. Hence, it tries to impose a fixed model of sexuality by providing cultural scenarios that, with reference to moral reasoning, focus mostly on the negative effects of becoming sexually active before marriage. These scenarios also tend to support traditional gender roles and point to the family as the most important part of social life. However, according to studies both experts and young people stress that “preparation for family life” is being taught in a poor manner, failing to introduce reliable, age-adjusted sexuality education. Therefore this paper points out that by trying to impose a fixed and unified model of what sex and sexuality should be, “preparation for family life” fails to take into account the conditions of late modernity, which provide both a diversity of accessible sources of knowledge about sexuality and a plurality of cultural scenarios available to young people through these sources. Consequently, this paper stresses the importance of designing a tailor-made sexuality education program which would be based on reliable information and supported by up-to-date, scientific research. Hence, it would not only meet young people’s expectations but also provide apparatuses corresponding both with young peoples’ actions and other, available sources of knowledge on sexuality. This would deliver a plurality of cultural patterns as a valuable resource to construct one’s sexual scripts.

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the changes in the functioning of education in free market conditions. Due to the broad area of issues, the author focuses on the financing of preschool education, which is in a special way connected with the political and economic situation of our country. The author is looking for answers to the question concerning the consequences of the free-market environment for pre-school education resulting from the transfer of public tasks to the private for-profit sector and the introduction of the principles of the private sector to the work of public institutions. The author compares the content of the Ministry of Education’s regulations concerning the organization of pre-school education, with the information contained in the CSO and Social Diagnosis reports. In this way, the author points out the consequences of the instability of educational policy for financial decisions at the local level, which can lead to the growth of social trust crisis.

Using the World Values Survey (WVS) as a background the paper discusses a tension between the general evaluative outlook of Swedish teacher students and the educational values established by The Swedish National Agency for Education (SNAE). According to the results from WVS, which maps evaluative differences between approximately 80 countries in the world, Sweden stands out as a country that rejects traditional values and embraces so called secular self-expression values. However, the values established by SNAE include both traditional values, such as “sharing a common cultural heritage”, and secular self-expression values, such as “individual freedom and integrity”. Against this background we conducted a survey of 179 Swedish teacher students in order to investigate the relation between their evaluative outlook and the values they are supposed to convey to their pupils as established by SNAE. The result of the survey indicates that these students do not differ in any significant respect from the Swedish population in general as regards secular vs traditional evaluations. The fact that the traditional values emphasized by SNAE seem to be scarcely represented among the teacher students, makes questionable whether they will be present in their future teaching. On the assumptions that there are important educational values among the traditional as well as the secular self-expression ones, and that values are reproduced within an educational system, we argue that there is reason to take the imbalance in the evaluative outlook of the students seriously.

RE didactics is a relatively new field of research in Sweden. In this article, the current status of the academic discipline is examined by drawing on empirical material: literature used in teacher education and interviews with active RE teachers. The study finds a lack of reflection concerning the fundamentals of the subject, both on what RE ought to be, as well as on its overarching goals. This absence of a ‘ big picture’ also seems to result in active teachers lacking a professional vocabulary to discuss their practice. The article asks whether RE didactics in Sweden is being defined by the national curriculum, instead of being a critical voice contributing to a debate and offering alternative approaches to teachers.

With growing cultural and religious diversity in Iceland over the last two decades it is of interest to study young people’s views and attitudes in this regard and how they talk about religion and religiosity in a multicultural society. This paper presents findings from a four year (2011–2014) mixed method research project on life views and life values of young adults (age 1824) in a multicultural society in Iceland. The theoretical framework includes theories on secularization, desecularization and detraditionalization together with discussions on religious diversity. A survey was conducted in 2011 and 2012 among students in seven upper secondary schools in the Reykjavík area and other areas of Iceland. The findings from the survey indicate that although the majority of the participants are of the opinion that human beings always need something to believe in and that it is important to be convinced about one’s life view or belief, many of them are not of the opinion that religions are important in the society, religions have little influence on their views, and religious activity seems not to be an important part of their lives. This also applies to Athose that claim to be religious or belong to a religious organisation. At the same time the participants generally have positive attitudes towards ethnic and religious diversity. The findings from the survey provided a basis for focus group interviews with mixed groups of students in the same schools in 2013 and 2014. In this article, some main results from the survey are introduced, while the focus is primarily on the findings from the focus group interviews regarding the young people´s views on religion, religious diversity and religious activity in a multicultural society in Iceland. The findings indicate among other things that although the daily life of the young people is secularised, many of them are of the opinion that it helps to believe or pray, for example in times of difficulties. This indicates that the secularization process has not gone as far as expected or that some kind of de-secularisation has developed in the wake of the growing religious diversity in Icelandic society.

Violence against children in the family is a problem that has been observed for centuries. One of the sources of treating it as common, and by many as a natural way of upbringing, is intergenerational transmission. Observing violent behavior of parents in childhood and imitating it in adulthood is associated with the phenomenon of intergenerational transmission of such forms of family relations. The research presented in the article confirms the high probability of such transmission. Adult spouses experiencing violence from their own parents in childhood were more likely to direct deprecation and physical and verbal aggression toward their partners than those not experiencing it. They were less likely to show them their support and commitment to building relationships. The study also showed that those who experienced childhood violence as a result of participating in the psycho-educational classes of the School for Parents changed their parenting attitudes from abnormal to normal to some extent. They began to show more acceptance and understanding of their children’s right to develop autonomy, they also became more consistent and made excessive demands on them less often. The study confirmed that it is possible to weaken and even stop the process of intergenerational transmission of violence against children through a psycho-educational form of family support.

The aim of this article is to illustrate the possibilities and directions of development of the field of “family studies”, which is shaped in the Polish science system. The desk research method was the basic method used during the conducted analyses. In particular, the examination of documents and sources was used. The results of the research may be a contribution to the discourse on the further development of the field and disciplines that fit into this space of scientific activity. The legal possibility of developing a field of science profiled around family issues is associated with the necessity of joint academic involvement of specialists who have taken up family issues from various points of view in their previous activities. Academic discourse and scientific research cooperation seem to be a good way to combine the achievements of science and support the further development of a separate field and disciplines of family studies (sciences).

This article aims to illustrate the different ways of organizing commercialization processes at universities to inspire existing technology transfer offices (TTO) and increase their effectiveness. Its implementation was based on a qualitative study conducted among 4 Polish and 2 foreign (Belgian and Spanish) universities. The study results show that the standardized commercialization system doesn’t exist at Polish universities. Research results present that there are many commercialization models, but it is a rather formal procedure than a system or process. Moreover, polish universities perceive TTO as a part of the administration, even if TTO’s employees have ambitions to build merit potential. Finally, the challenge is combining the research process with commercialization to increase efficiency. Our research presents interesting new approaches concerning commercialization: the flipped knowledge transfer (FKT) and the community engagement research initiative (CERI). It is essential to understand that commercialization starts with a research project not with a research result or patent. Both approaches mention before focusing on social engagement in research first and may have an essential impact on TTO’s effectiveness and the university’s social impact. An interesting option is to implement CERI first and evolve it to FKT to perform university research "from the outside to the inside" approach, i.e. undertaking research work in response to stimuli coming from the social and economic environment.

Purpose: The purpose of this scientific article is to conduct a comparative analysis of the evaluation of university cooperation with the socio-economic environment, using the examples of the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany, and to identify the differences between the analysed systems as a determining factor for the superiority of the German higher education system over the Polish system. Methodology: Three research methods were employed to achieve the chosen research objective: the formal-dogmatic method (dogmatic-legal), the comparative law method (legal comparativism), and the empirical method (empirical research) as an auxiliary method. The formal-dogmatic method was used to analyse the logical and linguistic regulations governing the institutional framework of agencies responsible for the quality of education in Poland and Germany. The comparative law method will be implemented through classical comparative legal research aimed at analysing the similarities and differences in legal regulations regarding the evaluation of university cooperation with the socio-economic environment in the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. The empirical method was used as an auxiliary method to analyse the thesis presented by the author, which is the superiority of German universities over Polish universities. Findings: The article points out fundamental differences in the legal status of agencies responsible for the quality of education and the systems of quality evaluation in the area of university cooperation with the socio-economic environment in the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. Furthermore, the author identifies this state of affairs as one of the factors determining the superiority of the German higher education system over the Polish system. Originality/value: The chosen research objective represents an unexplored field so far. There is a lack of studies in the domestic and European markets that aim to systematically compare the evaluation of university cooperation with the socio-economic environment in the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. The conducted analysis and the resulting conclusions effectively fill this gap.

Polish education is dominated by national literature. That is why children’s contact with literary classics, which are usually addressed to adults, requires specific didactic procedures. During the work with the description of an orchard from Sir Thaddeus three stages should be planned: 1. – preparation for reception, i.e. the development of a physical description that will be confronted with Mickiewicz’s description; 2. – text reading and analysis for elicitation of the artistic composition, artistic language usage, poet’s imagination which enables the reader to experience the fabulous fictitiousness of the depicted world (personifications, animations) together with the author, to notice his sense of humour. The third stage is text memorization and the use of the description skills acquired during the activity in child’s private letter.
