The paper presents results of ethnographic research on the Jewish community in Szadek. By means of interviews with persons who remember the prewar period information was collected about Jewish people living there in the 1930s, during German occupation, at the time of existence and liquidation of the ghetto, and in the post-war period – return of the survivors and the history of the synagogue and the Jewish cemetery. The picture presented in this article is made up of accounts given by Szadek’s Polish residents. Their reminiscences and descriptions of persons, places, events and situations, culture, traditions and occupations reveal emotions and attitudes towards the Jewish community and throw some light on interpersonal relations.

The creation of the scholarly journal Studies on Fascism and Hitlerite Crimes was a result of a need to coordinate research led by scientists from the University of Wroclaw and employees of District Commission for the Examination of Hitlerite Crimes in Wroclaw which concerned the doctrine of National Socialism and its practical implications in the Third Reich. Such cooperation was primarily based on the contract signed on 22.03.1976 by the University of Wroclaw and the above- -mentioned Commission which established a framework for the joint effort to research fascism and Hitlerite crimes. This agreement stipulated the creation of a common Research Team. The first results of the Team’s work dealing with the policies of national socialists towards Poles in Germany (especially in Silesia) were presented in November 1972 during the scientific conference organized in Wroclaw by the Central Commission for the Examination of Hitlerite Crimes. Several papers were presented. Professor Karol Jonca talked about the implementation of law and national policy of the Third Reich regarding Polish minority before World War Two; professor Franciszek Polomski explained the discriminatory function of “the racial law” (Rassenrecht) in the Third Reich; professor Alfred Konieczny described the process of liquidation of Polish ownership in Germany during World War Two; professor Wojciech Wrzesiński talked about the Nazi policy towards Polish institutions (recognized by public law) in the Third Reich. In the course of the discussion on these subjects, the problem of widespread dispersal of articles concerning the ideology and practice of fascism was raised.

This paper reviews characteristics of audiovisual testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other victims of Nazi crimes. It provides general reflections about the genre of survivor’s testimony, and underscores some challenges associated with this resource. Characteristics of eye witness accounts and their application to educational use are discussed in the second part of the paper. The research used data from the Visual History Archive of the Shoah Foundation Institute, a collection of 52 000 videotaped and digitized testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other victims of Nazi persecution. The Archive is now housed at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. It is the largest collection of eyewitness accounts of Shoah of this kind in the world, and a resource that “shifted the collection of testimonies to a new scale”.

The theme of unhappy and persecuted lovers who cannot find peace even after their death is a very old one in European and Eastern literature. Fine plants grow on the grave(s) of the dead lovers striving to unite and gently intertwine as a symbol of eternal love, even a post mortem love of two young people. But even that is forbidden by those who were separating them in life. The best known variant of this motif is the story of Tristan and Isolde's unhappy love. In Spanish and Jewish-Spanish folk literature, however, this motif is known under the title Conde Olinos or Conde Nino. The most beautiful version dates from the 15th century but it is very damaged and frag-mented, so that Ramon Menedez Pidal reconstructed a single text from nu-merous various versions, which should be the closest to the damaged original. Also, in folk literature of Bosnian Jews several versions of the theme remained, known under the title La Sirena. However, they are all in fragments representing Eastern adaptation of this motif. But the things changed when Samuel Elazar, a collector, registered a version of this motif, in 1968, from Merjam Baravram, a housewife from Sarajevo who was 73 at the time. Her version is integer, and by the number of transformations of dead lovers unsurpassed in literature. Its beauty is enchanting, and this is a real gem of Spanish romancero.

In the second half of the 19th century, during the time of the vigorous felling of the woods of the Koška Chase, numbers of smiths, wheelwrights, joiners and carpenters, and also traders, Jews, moved into Koška. In this difficult transition period (when financial business was making its way in only slowly) trade was small-scale, and in Koška there were just one or two Jewish families. At the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th, at the time of Koška’s greatest development in industry and transportation, the area was hit by a new wave of immigration – railway workers, workers engaged in felling the woods, of German, Czech, Slovakian, Polish and Hungarian origin, and the Jewish traders. They had a great influence on the Croat inhabitants of Koška. In these years there was a great intermingling of languages, customs, tools and production techniques. The intersection of the railway line and other very fine infrastructure meant constant immigration into Koška right down to 1936, when the intensive felling of the woods stopped. A dozen or so Koška people were educated in the Osijek high schools (the first high school pupil from Koška was a Jew, Josip Ehrlich), and the greatest change came about in the transformation of leisure time; a football club was founded in 1919, a Sokol organisation in 1930, a hunting club in 1919, and the volunteer fire brigade, founded in the early part of the century, was revived in 1926. Apart from putting out fires, this group also had a drama troupe. Alongside the other people of Koška, the Jews also took part in the work of these organisations. In the 1930s, Koška, within the parliamentary democracy of monarchical Yugoslavia, took a step forward to becoming a contemporary village. The Jewish community had a considerable influence in this transformation. In 1942 the Jewish population in Koška was annihilated. The conduct of the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia to the Jews and Romany led to Koška people going off into the anti-fascist units.

Adatközlôm halálával a kéziratot lezártam.

Szép Ernô: a gyermeklelkû költô, a gyermekhang lírai megidézôje, a gyermekkor költôje.
