The author of the article shows the major themes of the teaching of Saint John Paul II on Eastern Christian spirituality. He indicates the pope’s personal interest in the culture, especially philosophy and art developed in the orthodox environment. The article also presents the pope’s ecumenical efforts and the related difficulties. On the broader theological basis the author elaborates the most important elements of the orthodox spirituality, which the Slavic pope pointed out during his long pontificate.

ІДЕАЛ ХРИСТИЯНСЬКОЇ КУЛЬТУРИ В ДОКУМЕНТАХ ВСЕПРАВОСЛАВНОГО СОБОРУ

Purpose of the research is to analyze the methods for constructing the concept of Orthodox culture in the documents of the All-Orthodox Council, a characteristic of the type of the ideal of Christian culture proposed in the documents of this cathedral. The methodology of the study is to use methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, as well as hermeneutical and comparative approaches. Scientific novelty consists in understanding the social and ethical project of Christian culture, which is proposed in the documents of the All-Orthodox Council as a modern form of Christian humanism, which arose under the influence of personalism and existentialism. Conclusions. It is proved that in the documents of the All-Orthodox Council the ideal of the renewed society is proposed as an exit from the crisis state of sociality, connected with the numerous challenges of the times of modernity and postmodernity. The council sharply criticizes individualism and collectivism, relativism and fundamentalism. The documents of the cathedral also give an analysis of the culture of consumerism and liberal globalization, which are accused of de-identification processes. The proposed model of Christian culture is characterized by openness, dialogue essence, protection of the dignity of the individual, upholding the right to religious freedom. At the heart of this culture is the ethics of responsibility for the other and for everything created by God. This ethic of responsibility is valid only if it is sensitive to the needs and sufferings of another, and its implementation provides for, in addition to social reformism, significant peacekeeping efforts.

The Romanian Orthodox Church from Banat, faithful to the Orthodox principles and commandments, has always been an institution in service of her flock. Thus, because the Romanians from this region desired to be united with the Romanians from all other provinces, the Church, through its ministers, supported this desideratum. After the World War II, when the moment for this unification came, the bishops, the deans and the entire clergy from Banat were, alongside all political representatives of the people, the first fighters for the national ideals of unity.

In the anniversary year 2017, designated by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, under the proposal of the Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, “The anniversary year of the holy icons, icon-makers and church painters and The commemorative year Justinian the Patriarch and the defenders of Orthodoxy during the time of the communism in Romanian Patriarchy” and throughout the years prior to this anniversary year, several books, articles and studies have come out, highlighting the personality and activity of the Patriarch Justinian, who led the Romanian Orthodox Church in very troubled times, for which reason he was quite often vilified and catalogued as the “red” Patriarch. During his Patriarchate, the ecumenical connections were restored and the contacts with other related Churches have been intensified. Throughout this time, several parishes were set up in the West, four on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. This article is specifically dedicated to setting up these religious communities.

In the second Sunday of Great Lent, the Holy Gospel is saying about the healing of a sick that has been brought in front of Jesus by four man. The Gospel doesn’t say that they were relatives: the children of the sick man, a mother, a father, brothers, but it simply said that there were four of them. They were simply his friends, maybe – neighbors. They did their best not for themselves but for the sick man. After all, not every man will try to climb up the roof of somebody else’s house, strip it, lift the stretcher with a sick man there and then lower it with the help of ropes. We can imagine how inconvenient and hard it was. But at any price they wanted to get into the house where Christ was. And Christ saw their faith in this effort and diligence. And the main thing that He saw was, of course, the love towards this man. They were fussing not about themselves but about him, they were waiting for his cure.

The Bucharest Bible is the expression of wishing for unity of our ancestors, of language and faith, of preserving of being and worshiping both religious and Romanian. Bringing to life this unique act of Romanian culture, in a century in which the entire people affirmed his consciences, is an irrefutable prove that they were already one from the spiritual point of view, and their desire was to be same from the national point of view. In that sense, the spoken Word of God, and from now one the printed one, in Romanian, proved to be an essential factor to struggle and fulfill this noble desire.

The Eparchy of Arad had two church publications, namely: the „Biserica și Școala” Magazine (1877), belonging to the Eparchial Center, and the “Path to Salvation” (1941), printed by the Theological Academy in Arad. This study shall only make reference to the first of the aforementioned two, namely, the eparchial magazine “Church and School” and the fight for maintaining it alive. To this end, we shall present a sequence of the content of the documents within the archives of the Eparchial Center, which shows a full correspondence between the Bishop Andrei Magieru (1935-1960), the then-Bishop of Arad and the Holy Synod, the Patriarch Justinian Marina (1948-1977), the Prime Minister Petru Groza (1945-1952), the Ministry of Cults, the Ministry of Arts and Information, the Ministry of Propaganda, the Prefecture of the Arad county, the Media Directorate, the Provincial Media Service and so on and so forth.

The contemporary Orthodox Theology “yesterday, today and forever, is the same” (cf. Evrei 13, 8). The contemporary Orthodox Theology is, and especially should be equally prophetical, apostolic, patristic and eschatological, fulfilling its ecclesiological, sacramental and philocalic dimension.

CREȘTINISMUL NOSTRU VECHI; SINODUL I ECUMENIC ET ALIA (CÂTEVA REMARCI NECESARE)

In this research, entitled „Our [Romanian] Antique Christianity; The First Ecumenical Synod of Nicaea et alia”, the author (V. V. Muntean) discusses selectively some important themes from the anthology Fontes Historiae Daco-Romanae Christianitatis, published in Iaşi in the year 2008. The analysis of some assertions of the publisher (N. Zugravu) from the preliminaries leads to the conclusion that it was not intended – as it was expected – to point out the diachronic reality, but to contest, by hook or by crook, the mission of the Saints Apostles Andrew and Philip in Dobrudja, the old Scythia Minor. The present micro-study tries to argue the historicity of this evangelization and also the presence of a bishop from Tomis (Constanţa today) at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325, and in the end to correct other groundless affirmations from the so-called „Introductory Study” which precedes the narrative sources found in Fontes.

VJERSKI PRIJELAZI S PRAVOSLAVNE NA RIMOKATOLIČKU VJEROISPOVIJEST NA PODRUČJU VAŠČANSKOG ARHIĐAKONATA (VIROVITICA, SLATINA, ORAHOVICA, NAŠICE) U VRIJEME NDH (1941.-1945.)

The area of the Vaška archdeaconate comprised during the period between the wars the districts of Virovitica, Slatina and Našice. According to the census from 1931, somewhat less than one third of the population was Orthodox. In this paper the author researches into the conversions from the Orthodox to the Roman Catholic confession in this area during the period between 1941 and 1945. The research is based on the records from archival fonds such as the Archbishop’s Clerical Board of the Archbishop’s Archive in Zagreb, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Justice and Worship of the Croatian State Archive. Based on the list of names of converted persons, i.e. of those who filed an application to convert, in the area of 23 parishes in the territory of the Vaška Archdeaconate, the author concludes that no fewer than 6,685 Orthodox persons filed an application to convert to the Roman Catholic confession, mainly from April 1941 to April 1942. According to the preserved documents from the Archbishop’s Archive in Zagreb and the Croatian State Archive, more conversions actually took place; however, no list of names of those who filed an application to convert or of those who did convert is preserved. Such a problem arose in the parish of Voćin where people converted collectively, in huge numbers, and the missionaries, conducting the religious conversions, documented merely the number of the converts. In this paper the author discuses the types of individual conversions.

Храмоздательная деятельность династии Бахрушиных

The article provides an overview of the church construction activity of the Bakhrushin Dynasty as well as their other charity work. The topic is presented through the lens of sociological and cultural transformations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries when charity work in general and the number of churches in particular constructed was a response to the challenges brought about by the 20th century. A study of the Bakhrushin Dynasty reveals the reasons why the construction of religious buildings flourished in the abovementioned time – these buildings were based in Orthodox tradition and upbringing and included the personal characteristics of the benefactors. The retrospective of the church-related charity work carried out by the Bakhrushins shows its size and reveals how much the benefactors were involved in the life of the churches they patronized. Such churches not only turned into centres of spiritual enlightenment for the people, but also appeared to become prominent architectural sites, which is a remarkable trend of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
